Firewatch: I started playing Firewatch during that magical period of my life between “It’s complicated” and “It’s over.” You know the one. That beautiful emotional wasteland where you're technically single, technically not single, and somehow still losing arguments with someone who isn't even there. So naturally, I decided to escape into the wilderness. You play Henry, a likeable but somewhat stoic man who runs away from his problems and takes a job as a fire lookout, spending his days doing manual labour, wandering through the woods and staring dramatically into the middle distance. And before you judge the man too harshly: his wife died, you heartless bastards. Have some empathy. Then, somewhere between the trees and the static, comes a voice over the radio. A beautiful voice. The kind you could listen to for hours. Suddenly, being alone in the woods doesn't seem like such a bad idea anymore. Days 1–2: “I've come here to disappear.” Days 3–77: “So anyway, there's this woman I've been talking to…” You spend the game exploring the wilderness, solving a mystery, uncovering increasingly strange things and developing a relationship with someone you've never physically met. Basically, Tinder for emotionally damaged people with walkie-talkies. Then the final stretch arrives. The mystery unfolds, the wilderness starts feeling very different, and an emergency evacuation is called. Suddenly, it's time to leave. I went in expecting a walking simulator with pretty scenery and some decent dialogue. Instead, I got emotionally mugged by a woman with a radio, and underneath all the mystery and humour, Firewatch understands something rather uncomfortable: sometimes you don't go somewhere to find yourself. Sometimes you go somewhere because you don't know what else to do. I recommended if you're going through some ♥♥♥♥. You might come out with a little perspective, and possibly an unhealthy attachment to a woman you've only ever spoken to through a radio. 🖖 Brom
Firewatch is less of a game and more of an interactive story. Outside of "using a map to navigate" there basically isn't any gameplay, besides walking around. Choices appear to have very little meaning and exploration slows the story down while adding more or less nothing to your experience (with possibly a single exception). So, that is to say, exploration is not really rewarded, despite the world feeling inviting. It's an interesting choice to make a big inviting world, but basically waste your time for exploring it. On top of that, it's actually pretty buggy. Navigation with mouse and keyboard is strange (with my speed sometimes being slowed for no reason) and interactable (like padlocks) will sometimes move you away from them when you try to click on them, instead of actually interacting with them. I'm genuinely shocked they haven't patched this game's bugs by now, given its success. All that having been said, if your expectations are in the right place, the story (once it gets going) is really quite good and the main cast deliver their dialogue (of which there is a TON) extremely well. The ultimate resolution of the story is generally strong and satisfying, at least in regards to the mysteries presented, and the characters conclusions are... well... what you make of them. If you are merely interested in an interactive story, Firewatch delivers in spades. If you want a game to play, you will probably be disappointed. It took me a while to reset my expectations, but once I did, I enjoyed the ride.
The best story game I've ever played
I bought this at an 80 percent discount and i think thats about the price id be happy paying for the experience, but i otherwise dont really recommend it. i think as a story board it makes sense but the way you navigate through it in game can be odd and there are things that dont necessarily add up or make sense. Since thats generally guiding the happenings of this games limited actual gameplay it automatically makes the game somewhat worse. also you cant really impact the story so dont think its a "choices matter" game and you wont really do much deviating so you will most likely end up with anywhere from 5-7 hours of total gameplay. cons and pros section: PROS: -delilah is a fun VA and even though the protagonists VA doesnt keep up most of the time it was fun enough dialogue. -atmosphere is pretty dang good. the few random fun happenings are entertaining and the area has a general mystique that makes you want to walk further for a while. -the in-game map and compass are VERY good. not just in appearance and aesthetic, but also in functionality. down to how it marks important things you come across with a nice key to follow and everything. you would benefit greatly from turning off your location showing on the map and also turning off the interface (until you start handling items, you might want to see the options those have per item in the bottom right of the screen so turn interface on for that). -the integration of the limited film camera throughout the game was well done and complimentary to a game like this. -spamming the option to smash the locked gate in the cave made me laugh a lot. -the "moral" of the story, aka the overall outcome of the main characters life problems, were nice story elements especially in the setting CONS: -(the biggest con imo)a game about traversing geometry where you regularly get stuck on things, including a bug that turning v-sych off makes your movement completely break lmao. even with v-sych on sometimes you can get stuck so badly you need to reload an earlier save. explore, but at your own risk. docks satisfaction points continuously. -the free-roaming elements to the game dont feel like they should really be explored since you are more or less streamlined by a progression system in order to be able to traverse the map. they even go as far as having you end up traversing the whole maps walkable area throughout the story if you just choose one way to go each time. making it so that you might as well just never explore extra out side of where youre already going for the main objective. -the classic "if you interact with the wrong thing too early you will get cutscened to the next part of the game without being able to see everything else" happens. -although the dialogue can be entertaining the modern speech used does tend to leave you with a suspension of disbelief if you are wanting immersion in the story and setting, which is the 1980's. -the paranoia that forms
when you finally enter the fenced in area
feels very forced in a way where it really forces a certain method of thought that seems very conspiratorial and therefore very unbelievable. removing its impact from the story at hand.
