Went in spoiler free and this is what I get, please listen to this spoiler free review if you are a man + you value your sanity. This game makes a claim: *Being a man = f*scism* *Being a woman = eternal goodness* This is what this game shoves down your throat with straight face. Fcking hell just when I started to like the game and by the game I mean "the good writting" I get slapped in the face with such an outrageous statement. For those who do not know, this game is about you having many personalities inside you and they argue in your head for your attention. Story goes that one is a man and one of them is a woman. No spoilers-> you are on multiple occasions thrown into a conversation when the woman voice makes a emotional argument with big logic leaps and shoves it down your throat making the whole argument incoherent mess. Then when the manly voice in your head tries to argue othervise -> the game calls it f*scist and the argument is cut off before the argument by the feminine voice. You can tell that the game is trying to tell you what is wrong and what is right. Yes you can choose to be a man in the situation, but the game calls you the f-word. You can tell, when this game is trying to be funny or when it is trying to say something "deeper". Not this part. This is just plain out Feminism propaganda and since I hate when games do that, I call it out. Jesus fcking christ you could have at least tried being unbiased. Why do I have to play as a cuck man? How can you write a manly character that is soo based at times, yet such an incel at times like this? If it is a joke it is really poorly written one, but I seriously doubt that is a joke. What the manly voice in your head would say in these situation is probably something alongside: "shut up already and let me speak!" But nope, not in this game, just a slow acceptance. Not like this game is not trying to tell you that men are absolutely untolerant agresive murdurers. What an irony. Yes you can make an argument that I do not tolerate such cr*p in games and that is ironical, but come on, any sane person gets mad when he is called names for no reason, more so when he paid for what he is hearing.
This game was so much fun! As mentioned in the Esoteric Ebb FAQ, the dev started working on a "spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment". He then played Disco Elysium, and was really impressed by its innovative gameplay mechanics. So he decided to "merge his original design with some of its elements". The result is a witty narrative-driven RPG mixing DnD TTRPG mechanics with an investigative, skill-based dialogue-heavy gameplay. I highly recommend it if you won't mind reading walls of text (there is even an in-game joke about it) written in a humorous and quirky tone.
A LOT of dialogue with no real feel that your choices matter. Little pay-off for long, long sretches of time dealing with silly stuff, while getting lectured at about gender of all things lol
I cant say its a bad game but its definitely not one I truly like. I dont like the pacing of unseriousness in dialogs - one second they are great and lively, then they are stupily funny and the next moment they try to push some higher meaning. I dont like the main story. It is nice, logical and well written but thats all. Its like Ive read some really nice fanfic that Ill forget in a couple of weeks. Nonetheless, again, I cant say the game is bad. It really feels like a one-shot tabletop dnd session. But its not enough for me personally.
I’ve heard this described as a Disco-like, but I must confess I’ve never played Disco Elysium yet so I can’t say whether its a good, mixed or bad one nor whether it earns the moniker. I will instead echo it does give off some Ultima vibes. And its funny how im going through Richard Garriotts Ultima series then on a whim I try Esoteric Ebb(EE) and somehow realize some snark er i mean stark similarities! The universe is telling me this must be the right path! What I can say on its own it does deserve praise for being a solid CRPG and unofficially based on a dungeon’s and dragon’s(DND) campaign. Where much of the gameplay is talking with others, investigating, questioning and in some cases, when all else fails we resort to physical conflict. Premise-wise, you the player control the ‘worst’ cleric and after waking up on a slab with some form of amnesia, unfortunate start already and we are apparently saddled with being part of an investigating why an explosion occurred in a tea shop in the city of Norvik. Days before an important election occurs. Will our job be so simple or perhaps esoteric!? God I adore the humor. The writing singlehandedly saved my playthrough, not overbearing at all and in fact quite reflective. Every conversation you make, every decision you make, hell every breath you take there is always an inner monologue that will unobtrusively say whatever they want to say. Think *Terry Pratchett, Month Python* levels. Smart comebacks, sassy/witty statements, informative/educational/debates, not boring always fascinating, if you love reading the margins of an author's notes, during conversations, or introspective thoughts, you’ll find inner monologues(ill talk about this very soon) a goofball, social common sense winner, a teacher, a guide, the gutfilled, and empathy create an amalgamation of all things serious, but knows when to take a step back without being too heavy-handed. Connecting to every aspect from narrative, plot, worldbuilding, dialog and my personal favorite combat encounters. Never a dull moment eh!? Easily one of my favorite highlights in the game as weird as it may sound are the inner monologues your brain will chime in each and every time you conduct an action in the world or converse with a npc in the world. May sound annoying as hell for those who haven’t played, but I assure you its not like that. Rather insightful discussions will occur because each monologue is separated by distinct voices denoted by the points you spend on your ability scores AKA(if you’re not aware that’s also known as!) attributes AKA skills AKA stats. And I always found their presence very comforting in thinking about circumspect matters on pretty much anything in-game. So you will hear 6(Charisma, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence, Strength, Wisdom) different disciplines chiming in abruptly/gently offering you their advice with their respective ideals. Rich as F^&% worldbuilding haven't been fascinated in reading pages of lore since the days I spent dozens of hours in *Pathfinder Kingmaker.* Or with *Kingdom Come: Deliverance* in the codex. Like if you don’t mind listening to the history of Norvik, the gods, religions, factions, companies, forbidden [blank] and all that jazz then full stop *Esoteric Ebb* may not be for you. Hell the place we're in? It’s only a small blip compared to the whole map in the Esoteric Coast See where Norvik is at the north under [Askanii]? Yeah, we're just another city. Not all that important aside from humanity being relatively near extinct in today's world. Population in total? 4.5 million. A microcosm compared to other fantasy races. A previous war pretty much decimated nearly 90% of our race. We lost badly and guess what were technically originally enslaved by DRAGONS. Yeah your favorite fire breathing wyverns enslaved US. Feast your eyes! on the cool as heck artstyle. Take all my money because high fantasy with all the colorful spectrum of the rainbow is here! Hard to describe with words and I feel the artstyle speaks for itself, every citizen is lovingly crafted, every environment doesn’t look like its a copy pasta from AAA studio taking shortcuts, this is true blue bonafide indie isometric camera view lovingly crafted. Amazing seeing the development progress from years back too! Story is a slowburn, but once you get past the early hump the narrative proves their mettle. Not kidding, can take a while for plot elements to rear in, but honestly that’s my fault for gallivanting off into the city streets instead of focusing on the main quest. So if at any point you feel bored, simply continue with the main quest narrative of investigating the tea shop explosion and you’ll be fine. I mean what else can a low ranked amnesiac cleric detective to do except follow his orders.
Strength: Mixed Feelings! Here is the straight no BS YOU NEED TO HEAR!
Party Member Woes - One of the great things I love about CRPG’s is having party members, they bring meaningful interactions to the cast and I live for the drama unfolding if certain members have a conflict with one another or internally. Completing their respective sidequests for character development is always a pleasure too. Sure, going alone is viable in some games as a lone wolf, but more often an isometric rpg will undoubtedly have companions especially when marketed on the cover(as is the case for Esoteric Ebb), so when I learn I can only have 1 companion with me. And the other only comes during certain parts of the game and not 24/7. I'm going to be a little puzzled. And learning of another I had no idea beyond a pretty obscure requirement I'm going to be severely disappointed.
Wisdom: As all things we come at the final turn of the tide… BEHOLD the final thoughts from some Detective
Despite my mixed feelings affecting my whole experience I believe a sequel could do wonders in fleshing out the shortcomings EE has. No super obscure companions or strict handicapped companions. IMHO CRPG’s benefit from having companions early on and its up to the player to decide to kick them out or not. More fleshed out combat encounters instead of the current uneven blend 85%ish no combat while the 15% is combat, even if that 15% is really cool dynamic combat I enjoyed. Hell playing fashion cleric and equipping equipment to manage my stats for incoming dice checks is fun as are finding the various helmets to wear on my loveable amnesiac. With all that said, I wholeheartedly recommend Esoteric Ebb, especially if you’re looking for something different from the usual CRPG’s and are more focused on a humorous, *Terry Pratchett like/Monty Python-like/Ultima 4* vibes, rich world full of fantasy whimsy, charm and exhausted by elections and politics then your amnesiac cleric detective may possibly be the right fit for you! I mean hey if my word isn't enough i'll just echo what Argo Tuulik(one of the original writers on Disco Elysium) said about EE. "If you enjoyed Disco Elysium, do yourself a favor and try Esoteric Ebb. It's *easily* the most exciting game Disco has inspired, one that transcends imitation and stands strong on its own. Haven't been this impressed by a game since I played Pathologic 2." 8.2/10
This game feels a lot like what would happen if Reddit created an RPG. (No hate on Reddit, but...) There are political entities you can vote for. They all sort of suck. You can persuade people to vote for - or not vote for - them. The reasons tend to be shallow (just like a message board!) Most of the female characters also kind of suck, for very modern reasons. (They're just hating on men! Because like, feminism! Or being weird female caricactures!) It's baffling to me as this game is so, so, so highly rated as being - if not a successor to Disco Elysium - at least a good follow up. But the protagonist is a personality-less drone. The companions are annoying. The politics feel like a shallow rehash of 2024 US politics and shallow debates of them thereof on social media. TBF, I feel like this game was meant to be a bit of a spoof on all of that. But it's not funny and leans a bit too into the ideology of what it's spoofing to really work. IMO, it's an absolute mess.
