No bad game has ever tricked me into playing it for this long.
First and foremost, a game is meant to be interacted with. Whatever else is happening, there is some "give" and "take" to the experience. This game already takes some liberties with the UX struggling to be "readable," for its beautiful, vivid art style, but if that were the only fault, it should be overlooked. Unfortunately, it is not, it is a warning sign to the absolute disaster that is interacting with the game. Secondly, and again, this is a lesser problem, this game harks back to the "school" of "design" from Sierra's 90s adventure games, where it is actually a hidden object game in disguise, where you must guess - or mouse over each and every scene, PAINSTAKINGLY - what is background and what is interactable. I suppose for a game that is clearly a mystery/investigation, this is thematically appropriate, but it is a miserable slog all the same. Yes, some/many/key objects have a callout/bubble/circle drawing one's attention, but if you've played a FPS game, imagine the shotgun is flashing on the center walkway, and all the ammo and health pickups require pushing random unmarked walls... that at least flash interactable when you go up to them. No, those two sins might be overlooked / forgiven if not for the absolute abomination that is INTERACTING with dialogue in this game, the CORE SELLING POINT, the MAJOR ACTIVITIY and the main excitement of the game! Ah, here are 6 options to click on, I can discuss 5 topics with this character and the 6th is exit the conversation. Excellent. Let's go from top to bottom. 1. Character shares paragraph 1. Click to proceed. Character shares paragraph 2. Click to proceed. Repeat for 7 paragraphs. You're finally clicking just to get all the dialog so you can read like a normal human being when... oops, because the dialogue selector is dynamically placed, bam, the 1 was right where you were clicking. You're repeating the 9 clicks to see the same paragraphs again. Okay, you'll be more careful this time. Let's click on option 2. It's another 6 paragraphs, requiring 6 clicks to see the whole text. And oops, you clicked ONE time too many, so you're getting dialogue 1, with its 9 clicks and I hope you don't miscount or you'll be there FOR THE FIFTH TIME dialogue again. AND THIS IS EVERYTHING. THE GAME'S VAUNTED DIALOGUE. WHICH IS EVERYTHING BECAUSE YOU'RE TRYING TO INVESTIGATE A MYSTERY AND YOU NEED TO INTERROGATE PEOPLE AND THINGS. EVERYTHING. HOW DID NO ONE POINT OUT THAT THIS SUCCCCKSSSSSSSSSSSSS? Even just letting 3 paragraphs go in a single click would be, in a patch-notes-to-game-improvement ratio, one of the all time greatest improvements. I get it. You can't flood all the text. It's a lot of text. But the current approach TRAINS the user to become a clicker. Look, there is clearly a clever, beautiful, great game under this. I gather that, excluding some bits and bobs for hire, it's a one man band that made this. But. This is the core interaction loop. It's everywhere and everything; this is not obscure code/technique, and credit where it is due, there clearly IS a lot of consideration (fixed with of text managing block o text fatigue, eg). But. This is riiiiight behind "game fails to load" level of stumbling right out the gate.
Game of the Year, no contest. Only about 13 hours long, but every one of them is tight — the storytelling hits just right, and the pacing of the final act is probably the strongest ever. Please let there be a sequel; I'll buy it the second it drops. This one nails the D&D angle in a way that clicked instantly. Plays like a mashup of Disco Elysium, Discworld, and Planescape: Torment — and somehow makes that combination feel natural instead of derivative.
I wasn’t expecting much, but dam I am still entertained 8 hours in, it’s really well written dialogue
Insufferable anachronistic dialogue, terrible artstyle, setting that makes no sense, obsessed with politics without understanding them (kind of like Kurvitz and Disco, but Disco at least had a good personal story that almost any person can connect with despite it's terrible politics). This game is the incarnation of reddit.
Could have been a great game but just too painful to read the excessive nonsense. I found myself clicking through dialogue and inner thoughts to try and get to the end. I never cared enough to go through with election day. So close to awesome, but they completed borked this game with terrible implementation. 3/10
6/10 it's a good game that feels unfinished, and that feeling gets validated the more you progress. the characters are fun, likeable, goofy, and memorable. the art style is charming, though it doesn't impact the overall experience in a major way. the story is captivating at first, though at the end, i find myself wishing it would end sooner than later. during the first 5 hours of my playthrough, i was looking forward to replaying the game again, picking different choices to get all the achievements, but as i finished the game, i dread having to press the new game button. the story starts of intriguing, as new characters are introduced and new sides to the story are revealed, the excitement is definitely there to figure out the mystery and see what the world has to offer. unfortunately, as you keep playing the game, the feeling slowly fades, and i felt nothing but tedium at the end. the game is unfinished, unpolished. there is no tutorial, and the game doesn't even nudge you to the right direction in moments where you feel like you are stuck. there were two moments where i felt completely lost and had to resort to looking up the solution online. there are continuity errors in dialogues where characters end up knowing things that they shouldn't have known or forget information that you already talked to them about. the menu is somewhat confusing, the map not particularly helpful, and some moments completely fall flat because there are no animations or the sound design is lacking. the first time you go down a ladder, the screen fades to black and there's dialogue describing how your character makes the dangerous climb down. it was pretty funny at first, but when i had to go down the second time and the game does it again, i audibly when "oh", because what do you mean this is how i go down steps/ladders/gaps every single time? you find pretty cool weapons in the game, and it's neat that whatever you equip reflects on your character's appearance (bare minimum), but seeing him do the same punching animation every time you land an attack completely just takes you out of it, the weapon you chose for your character means nothing. there is a lot of discourse with the dialogue, and for me i would say it's okay to good. there are moments of brilliance and conversations that are interesting, and some characters have well written motivations. i love reading, especially in games like these, but there are a lot of moments where a character would just go on and on and there's a huge wall of text in front of you that just doesn't seem that important to the overall plot. i do my best to really get into the story and dialogue of games, but for this one, there are points where it was just too much and i found myself skipping to the next text box and just not caring, which is so unfortunate. the saddest part is none of it matters that much when it comes to the ending, which just hammers home the "this game is unfinished" feeling. as the credits rolled, i was left with a feeling of "so none of the choices i made really mattered". you could argue that the end wasn't the point, it was the journey; but the journey ended up feeling dull by the end so no one wins. if you have read the positive reviews and feel like this game is for you, i recommend getting it when it's on sale, i don't think it's worth the full price.
Solid Gameplay Weighed Down by "Manly" Politics. Women Beware. I quite enjoy the gameplay, art, and characters. What I can't handle is all the talk of "manliness." In one part,
Strength says, "A generation of men told to be calm and nice will grow up to be violent and wild. A generation of men told to be COMPETENT and GOOD will grow up to be wise kings and lovable people." When I say I don't agree, Strength replies, "...you will continue down this false road of femininity."
This is just one example. The "manly" talk happens a lot and really takes me out of the game. The language is nowhere near inclusive. Yes, there are female characters, but they are centered around men. There are also some weird comments about sexuality and gender that are swiftly moved on from. While I think this might be mansplained away as playing devil's advocate, this is a game about politics and all sides need to be explored. If that's the case, then why not have some real dialogue about femininity and a true female protagonist? I will probably continue to play this game since I do enjoy it. I am used to this in gaming, but seriously, do better. There are tons of women who game and we want to be included!
Reskin of Disco Elysium, but way weaker. Bad humour and heavy focus on politics.
