Esoteric Ebb

a lot of people will tell you this game is both hilarious and emotionally powerful, but what you might miss if you're just skimming trailers and reviews is that the theology, metaphysics, and history in this world is fascinating as hell. It's an inspiration to anyone who has or ever will run a trpg campaign, anyone who has or will play dnd, and probably anyone who just likes thinking about worldbuilding. This world has not just esoteric supernatural events shaping its history, but also histories of scholars speculating about those events, *and the scholars who study those scholars*. it's a complex and rich, many-layered system of interconnected ideas that never, for a single moment, feels excessive or tedious to learn about. it's delicious and thought provoking. Esoteric Ebb makes me want to think more about Esoteric Ebb, but it also makes me want to think more about ttrpgs, about agency, about dnd, about dice, about politics, and about basically anything else.

Очень странная, в самом лучшем понимании этих слов, игра. Начало игры сопровождается постоянными мыслями "хы, это как Дискач, только куда более бюджетный и менее серьёзный". И если не углубляться в детали и не рассказывать про все перипетии сюжета, то так оно и есть на самом деле, однако.... Однако это не повод недооценивать Esoteric Ebb. Самым главным плюсом я бы назвал то, что игра часто заставляет смеяться (буквально смеяться - в голос!) , и при этом не забывает заставить задумываться, и делает это очень мягко, не приторно. Временами, ей удивительным образом удаётся делать и то и другое одновременно. И как и любой хороший коктейль EE не сразу раскрывает свой полный вкус и все его (вкуса) оттенки. Я до последнего оценивал для себя игру как "более дурашливый и смешной фэнтэзийный DE", однако Эбб сумел под конец выдать серьёзные, классные, запоминающиеся моменты и поднять те вопросы, на которые каждый из нас рано или поздно, невзирая на весь абсурд и дурашливость вокруг, вынужден будет ответить - хотя бы себе самому. Невероятно обаятельное и смешное повествовательное приключение - 100% стоит того, чтобы его пройти. Искренне рекомендую.

Fantastic game! Really enjoyed the narrative and its adaptation of the DnD ruleset. The art and the music is equally excellent. Real diamond the rough in the swathe of Disco Elysium like games now.

I haven't finished this game but it is great so far. It's Disco Elysium but with dnd mechanics.
