Interesting game! What can you want, you have a laser gun and you face multiple creatures! I thought I had a powerful computer but when I shot at flies (or whatever they are) one became 2 then 4 and then 8 flies! and then I started teleporting through the map! I thought I had passed through a portal to another map but no the multiplication of flies + spheres they shoot at you significantly lowers your FPS (an update in terms of performance would be needed). Epoch Spire is one of the more interesting free roguelike shooters I have played because it combines combat with discovery in a way that makes knowledge itself part of the progression. I explore a mysterious spire on a distant alien planet, fight strange creatures and try to uncover what the place is hiding. I really liked the feeling that every run teaches me something that can help on the next one. The combat is built around a laser weapon that I use both against enemies and as part of interacting with the environment. I enjoyed the simplicity because it leaves more room for the exploration and puzzle side of the game. Fights can still become tense, especially when several creatures are attacking at once, but the real challenge often comes from understanding how the world works. The most interesting mechanic is that knowledge survives death even though the rest of the run does not. When I discover how a puzzle works or learn something important about the environment, I can use that information in future attempts. I loved this idea because it makes failure feel productive. Even when a run goes badly, I usually come away knowing something that I did not know before. The randomized floors also give the experience some replay value. Each attempt can change the exact layout and encounters, so I have to adapt rather than following one fixed route. I liked the combination of procedural exploration and fixed knowledge because it creates a nice balance between uncertainty and mastery. My biggest issue is that the game can be difficult to understand at first. A lot of the information is intentionally hidden, but sometimes I wanted a little more explanation about what certain things were doing. The relatively simple presentation can also make some environmental details harder to notice, especially when I am moving quickly through a dangerous area. Still, I think the mystery focused design works extremely well. I enjoyed slowly turning unknown systems into familiar ones, because every discovery makes the next run feel more manageable. The permanent loss of equipment matters less when I know that I am steadily becoming a smarter player. Overall, Epoch Spire is a clever little first person roguelike with an excellent central idea. I enjoyed the alien atmosphere, laser combat and especially the way knowledge becomes the only truly permanent form of progression. It could explain some systems better and could use more variety, but the combination of exploration, puzzles and roguelike structure makes it stand out. Rating: 6.5/10
