I thought ENA: Dream BBQ was just going to be another weird indie game.
I was wrong.
The world makes absolutely no sense. The characters talk like they're from completely different realities. The environments look like someone put a dream, a fever dream, and an old computer together and somehow made it playable.
And somehow, it works.
At first, I was mostly laughing.
Then I started getting uncomfortable.
Then I started wondering what the hell was actually happening.
And somehow, I was doing all three at once.
What I love most about ENA is that it never feels like it's trying to explain itself to you. It just throws you into its world and expects you to keep up.
One moment you're talking to a completely bizarre character about something that makes absolutely no sense.
The next, you're walking through an environment that feels strangely beautiful despite looking like it shouldn't exist.
And then something happens that makes you stop and think:
"Wait... what?"
The humor is ridiculous, the visuals are unforgettable, and the soundtrack somehow makes the entire thing feel even more like a dream.
I've played games with clearer stories, better graphics, and much more conventional gameplay.
I don't remember most of them.
I'll remember ENA.
I'll remember the strange characters.
I'll remember the bizarre places.
I'll remember constantly wondering whether I was supposed to understand what was happening.
Some games tell you exactly what their world is.
ENA throws you into its world and lets you figure out what it means to you.
It's confusing.
It's funny.
It's beautiful.
It's unsettling.
And I have absolutely no idea what I just experienced.
