Great game, but unplayable now. Edit: i got a new super computer with win11 and now it works perfectly, go figure!
I've played this game off and on in the past years. Each time I come back to this game, the nostalgic feel of a retro style zombie game mixed with conquering sectors always refreshes my passion for gaming. It's nice to just have a simple game that rough but good. Plus it's on sale for less than 5$. Worth it imo
Emerge: Cities of the Apocalypse is a post-apocalyptic strategy title developed and published by Emilios Manolidis that combines city-building, turn-based strategy, and real-time combat into a single experience. Instead of focusing solely on constructing settlements or eliminating waves of zombies, the game asks players to restore civilization by reclaiming districts one at a time while managing limited resources and defending humanity from an ever-present undead threat. Its ambitious blend of genres gives it a distinctive identity, offering players a gameplay loop that rewards thoughtful planning as much as quick reactions. The strategic layer forms the foundation of the experience. Players gradually expand across a devastated city by capturing new sectors, gathering supplies, and restoring infrastructure. Every turn presents meaningful choices, as expanding too aggressively can leave valuable territories vulnerable, while excessive caution may slow overall progress. Resources remain scarce throughout the campaign, making efficient management essential. Buildings must be upgraded, supplies carefully distributed, and defensive preparations prioritized to ensure that newly reclaimed districts remain secure. Randomized events further strengthen replayability by introducing unexpected challenges and opportunities that force players to adapt rather than rely on repetitive strategies. Progression extends beyond territorial expansion through a character development system that allows players to choose different classes, each bringing unique abilities and tactical advantages. These specializations influence both combat effectiveness and strategic decision-making, encouraging multiple playthroughs with different approaches. Exploration also rewards players with new firearms, explosives, valuable materials, crystals, equipment, and survivors who can eventually join the growing resistance. Recruiting companions and improving their capabilities creates a satisfying sense of advancement while reinforcing the idea that rebuilding humanity requires more than simply defeating zombies. One of the game's defining features is its transition from turn-based management to real-time action whenever settlements come under attack. During these defensive encounters, players directly control their character to repel incoming zombie hordes using the weapons and equipment collected throughout the campaign. This mechanic creates a refreshing contrast to the slower strategic gameplay, preventing the experience from becoming monotonous. The success of these battles often depends on earlier planning, as stronger defenses, better equipment, and effective resource allocation significantly improve survival during intense assaults. The game's atmosphere successfully conveys the harsh realities of a collapsing world despite its modest production values. Ruined urban environments, the constant pressure of zombie invasions, and the ongoing struggle to rebuild civilization combine to create a persistent feeling of urgency. While the graphics are clearly representative of an independent production and lack the visual polish of larger-budget strategy games, they remain functional and communicate the setting effectively. Sound effects and combat audio add weight to firefights, helping reinforce the tension during defensive sequences even when the visuals occasionally show their age. Although the game introduces several creative ideas, it is not entirely free from shortcomings. Certain interface elements can feel dated, some mechanics require time to fully understand, and the balance between strategic management and action occasionally feels uneven. Players expecting a traditional city builder or a straightforward zombie shooter may need time to adjust to the hybrid design. However, those willing to embrace its unconventional structure will discover a game that consistently offers meaningful decisions, rewarding progression, and an engaging combination of planning and action. Emerge: Cities of the Apocalypse ultimately succeeds because it is willing to experiment instead of following familiar genre conventions. By merging territorial expansion, resource management, survivor recruitment, character progression, and real-time defensive combat into a unified experience, it creates a gameplay loop that remains engaging across multiple sessions. While its presentation lacks the refinement of major commercial releases, its creativity and strategic depth make it a worthwhile choice for players who appreciate ambitious independent games that attempt something different. Rating: 6/10
This is an excellent game. Time consuming, addictive, and fun. I feel a little lucky I bought it while it was on sale. I wish you could generate and keep your character over different maps.
For me...this game is just a realy good way to relax after a working day. Hour or even half makes your mind at ease:)
fica chato depois de um certo tempo, missões também não estão muito claras. Para um game de um único desenvolvedor até que vale a pena conhecer, mas infelizmente precisa evoluir muito.
Really cool game that kinda reminds me of neo scavenger. The learning curve is a bit steep, but you can always play on casual to keep things managable. There are some classes/a ton of bonuses/levels to unlock. If you don't go for the achievements, you will still spend about 50h+ ingame, depending on difficulty. I especially liked the random encounters and decisions you have to make, not knowing the outcome. The only negative point is the routine, cause after some hours everything feels the same. There are differences in the levels and there are a couple of tactics but you'll find out there is one particular fast way to win. The rest should be clearly visible from the screenshots. It's an old, but good game.
