Eggshit is one of the strangest free visual novels I have come across, and the name honestly gives me a pretty good idea of what kind of experience I am getting into. I play as Jia Xu, a shut in college streamer who suddenly wakes up after turning into a girl. Things get even more ridiculous when I find out that I am not the only person at the college who has somehow ended up in this situation. The whole story is built around that absurd setup, so I am mainly here for the comedy, characters and increasingly ridiculous situations rather than complicated gameplay. The presentation is probably what makes Eggshit work as well as it does. This version uses hand drawn storyboard artwork instead of the live action presentation used in Ballshit, and the entire thing has a deliberately rough and silly look. I actually think that fits the story because everything feels like it is supposed to be a ridiculous comedy rather than a serious visual novel. The artwork was made by a single developer, and there is a surprising amount of it considering this is a completely free game. There are also over 80,000 words of story, so this is not just a tiny joke game that I finish in a few minutes. I like the fact that the game actually commits to its bizarre premise instead of using it for one quick joke and moving on. I get to deal with confused roommates, friends, girlfriends and other students who are caught up in the same strange situation. There are choices and different conversations along the way, although the overall story is still fairly linear. For me, that works because the main appeal is seeing how the characters react to the ridiculous circumstances. The humour is very exaggerated, and some of it is definitely crude, but that is clearly part of what the game is going for. The biggest issue for me is that this version is quite limited as an actual game. There is no voice acting, no live action footage and no Steam achievements, and the artwork is presented as a storyboard rather than the more polished presentation found in Ballshit. I do not think that makes it bad, especially considering that Eggshit is free, but it does make the experience feel more like a story prototype or alternate version than a fully produced visual novel. The Chinese only language support is also a major limitation for me because the Steam version does not officially support English text. The adult content is another thing I have to take into account. There is sexual humour, partial nudity and mature situations throughout the story, and some scenes deal with situations involving questionable consent. It is not something I would describe as a game I can casually recommend to everyone because the humour and subject matter can get pretty uncomfortable. For me, the important thing is that the game is very open about the type of content it contains, so I know what I am getting into before starting it. What I appreciate most is that the developers have made the complete story available for free. I can play through the whole Eggshit storyline without having to buy anything, and the game includes cloud saving as well. I think that makes the rougher presentation much easier to accept. It feels like the developers wanted people to experience the story even if they did not want to pay for the live action version. I would still like more polished artwork, better language support and some actual voice acting, but I can understand why those things are missing from this particular version. Overall, Eggshit is a very weird visual novel that I think succeeds mainly because it fully embraces its ridiculous premise. I like the huge amount of written content, hand drawn artwork and absurd college comedy, and I appreciate that the complete story is available for free. The lack of English support, voice acting, achievements and more polished presentation holds it back quite a bit for me, while the mature content will obviously not be for everyone. Still, I would rather have a strange game with a clear personality than something completely forgettable, and Eggshit definitely has plenty of personality. Rating: 6.6/10

Eggshit is a deliberately eccentric visual novel that builds its entire identity around transformation comedy, college life, romance, and an unapologetically strange sense of humor. Developed by 疯兔游戏(FUNTOO Studio) and published by 疯兔游戏(FUNTOO Studio) alongside Liquid Meow, the game takes a premise that could easily have become a serious examination of identity and instead pushes it toward absurd situations, exaggerated personalities, and unpredictable relationships. It is primarily a narrative experience rather than a mechanically demanding game, so its success largely depends on the quality of its characters, dialogue, artwork, and ability to keep its unusual central joke entertaining. The story revolves around DanDan, an ordinary college student and dedicated otaku whose life changes dramatically after waking up as a beautiful young woman. Instead of spending too much time explaining the scientific or supernatural logic behind the transformation, the game quickly uses the situation to create social confusion and comedy. DanDan is suddenly forced to experience college from a completely different position, opening the door to embarrassing encounters, unexpected attention, romantic complications, and plenty of opportunities for the game to make fun of familiar visual novel conventions. The transformation is therefore not merely a cosmetic change but the foundation upon which most of the narrative chaos is constructed. Things become considerably stranger when DanDan discovers that other characters have similarly unconventional histories. Wu Yangyang, who appears to be an attractive yet distant campus beauty, has a past that completely challenges the player's initial assumptions about her. Another character likewise possesses a history involving a dramatic difference between previous identity and present appearance. By surrounding DanDan with people whose backgrounds are equally bizarre, Eggshit prevents its protagonist from being the only source of comedy. Instead, the entire cast becomes part of a larger joke about appearances, expectations, attraction, and the unpredictable ways people respond when conventional identities are overturned. This approach gives the characters more potential than their outward archetypes initially suggest. A campus beauty, an otaku, a shut-in, or a romantic interest might appear familiar to experienced visual novel players, but the game deliberately complicates those roles. Much of the entertainment comes from discovering what is actually behind each character's appearance and watching their personalities collide. Eggshit does not seem particularly interested in subtle realism. Its personalities and circumstances are exaggerated because the game wants reactions, misunderstandings, jokes, and awkward encounters to remain at the center of the experience. Gameplay follows the familiar structure of a visual novel and interactive fiction title. Players spend most of their time reading dialogue, following scenes, observing character interactions, and occasionally making decisions. Dating simulation and choose-your-own-adventure influences provide some player participation, although the experience remains comparatively linear. Anyone expecting extensive exploration, combat, elaborate statistics, or deep role-playing systems will therefore find little of that here. The player's main role is to accompany the characters through the story and influence certain situations rather than control an expansive simulation. That simplicity is not necessarily a weakness. Eggshit benefits from keeping its mechanics secondary because complicated systems could easily interfere with the pacing of its comedy. Visual novels depend heavily on timing, dialogue, character expressions, and scene progression, and the straightforward structure allows those elements to receive most of the attention. Saving at any time is particularly useful for this kind of game, while Steam Cloud support makes it easier to preserve progress. Mouse-focused controls and the lack of pressure from timed interactions also make the experience approachable for players who simply want to read at their preferred pace. The hand-drawn 2D artwork complements the game's personality. Rather than aiming for realism, Eggshit embraces a cartoony and comic-inspired visual style that fits the ridiculous nature of its story. Exaggerated expressions are especially useful in a comedy-driven visual novel because a character's reaction can strengthen a joke without requiring lengthy exposition. The relatively minimalist presentation also prevents the screen from becoming unnecessarily cluttered. The result is a visual identity that feels appropriate for a game interested in memes, awkward situations, transformation jokes, and deliberately over-the-top personalities. Language accessibility is one of the most significant limitations. Simplified Chinese is the principal supported language for the interface and subtitles, which makes the experience difficult to recommend to players who cannot read it comfortably. This matters even more than it would in an action-oriented game because nearly everything meaningful happens through written dialogue. Humor is also particularly vulnerable to language barriers because jokes often depend on slang, cultural references, phrasing, and timing. Players capable of understanding the original text will naturally receive a much clearer impression of the personalities and comedic intent. The game also contains mature and suggestive material, which is unsurprising considering its provocative premise and dating-oriented elements. The tone should therefore not be mistaken for a completely innocent college comedy despite the colorful presentation. Eggshit mixes sexual humor and mature themes with absurdity rather than attempting to become a purely explicit experience. Whether this combination works will depend heavily on individual taste. Players who enjoy unconventional adult-oriented visual novels may appreciate its willingness to be ridiculous, while those looking for restrained romance or serious drama may find the approach too chaotic. One of Eggshit's strongest qualities is that it understands the importance of having a distinctive identity. There are countless visual novels built around school environments and romance, so simply repeating familiar formulas would make another entry easy to overlook. Eggshit instead uses a bizarre transformation premise and an equally unusual cast to distinguish itself immediately. Even its intentionally crude title communicates that the developers are not aiming for elegance or seriousness. The game wants to be strange, comedic, provocative, and memorable, and it commits to that personality rather than attempting to satisfy every possible audience. Its free-to-play availability also makes experimentation much easier. Players interested in the premise can discover whether the humor appeals to them without having to justify an upfront purchase. That is particularly valuable for something this niche because the same qualities that attract one player may immediately discourage another. The restricted language support and relatively straightforward mechanics remain important drawbacks, but they do not erase the creativity behind the premise. Overall, Eggshit succeeds best as a quirky narrative curiosity that transforms familiar visual novel ingredients into something far less conventional. Its strange cast, gender-swapping premise, college setting, interactive choices, hand-drawn presentation, dating elements, and meme-oriented comedy give it a recognizable personality. It is unlikely to appeal to players searching for complex gameplay or grounded storytelling, but its target audience may find considerable entertainment in its willingness to embrace absurdity.
