About

Dread Admiral is a turn-based naval roguelite where you command a persistent fleet across a hostile archipelago. Every ship you build carries forward, and every ship you lose is lost forever. Every turn you spend on a mission is a turn less for the future - and a turn closer to a relentless enemy engulfing you.

Earn ranks, unlock Perks and technology, and earn upgrades for your Flagship even when you lose.

No two campaigns play the same. Navigate unpredictable mission modifiers against AI Admirals with distinct personalities and tactics, deciding when you fight and when you flee.
Every turn, the Black Fleet gets closer - will you gather more resources and ships, or will you abandon your mission to buy time?

Alternating Activations - You're always looking for the next best move, as is your opponent. Every ship has been delicately balanced to have a role to play.

Dread Admiral is perfect for players who enjoyed FTL, Urtuk: The Desolation, or Darkest Dungeon.
You will lose. You will make tough decisions. You will run out of time. You will fail mission objectives. You will eke out victory by the slimmest of margins against an AI that adapts its fleet and economy to yours.

EDIT - The Dev posted some advice for the first mission for those having issues figuring things out. It was honestly very helpful and really does change the overall sentiment of my review. First off. The good part. It reminds me a lot of an old PC game I used to play called Grandest Fleet. It does a great job of taking you back to that DOS game era... Also, it's a solo dev project and the Dev seems very active with the community and this goes a long way toward giving me faith in a game - especially one like that that is, for all its quirks, pretty unique. There's no tutorial mission but rather a bunch of videos that kindaaaaa show you what to do? It's basic how to with a bit of explanation. It does not really prepare you for the game in what I could call any meaningful way. HOWEVER! The Dev did post some super helpful information that helps tremendously with geting a feel of how I should be going about things. The graphics are good... for the kind of game this wants to be. It's a deliberate choice, and one I like. I'm not super fond of the UI but I've learned to live with it. It took me 3 hours of playing just to figure out what transports do. If any of this is listed in the help videos then fine, fair enough maybe I should read more but I'd argue that a game (esepecially a rougelike) should have a bit of a pick up and play aspect to it as well so that we can learn as we go. The Grandest Fleet was a fun, pick up and play type of game that held me four countless hours. This is a game that directly tries to capture that feeling and in many ways pulls it off. I do still feel like it has some rough edges but the Dev seems very invested in improving the game.

The game is difficult, perhaps overly so but I find it quite fun! Also the soundtrack is killer.
Unique and fun, I hope we see expanded content and gameplay.
It's a fun mix of turn based tactics and economy management.
I am enjoying the mechanics as well as the look and feel of the game. The campaign seems very challenging, with the main enemy making ships fast and hitting harder than I seem able to. Added to the turn limit before the Black Fleet shows up with more ships every turn, it seems like the deck is stacked against me.
Wow 10/10 for me. Do you like naval hex based wargames? Do you like a bit of silliness if it means you get to build crazy almost mad max warships, while still firmly remaining in proper WW1-2 style? Do like a dash of empire building? If so this should be a game for you! I don't care much for the turn counter aspect of the campaign, but after the first few levels (on easy at least) I got way ahead of it. Oh and its got a fleet painter! Make that 11/10. That is just wonderful.
If you like challenging turn based strategy games, then you'll probably enjoy this. It's definitely on the 'lite' side of 'Rougelite', but I like that because it doesn't trivialize difficulty as you progress. The combat itself has a good loop to it. Each turn the combat phase begins, all units who's weapons are in range will be able to do an attack; alternating between each player during the turn. This means that even your tankier ships can die very quickly if poorly placed. There are several units already available in the game, of which the balance seems to be decent at this point. Your 'tier 1' ships that require a normal shipyard are the following: Patrol Boat - A fast scouting ship that is only useful for scouting and hunting submarines. Transport - A siege ship used to capture cities. Destroyer - The cost effective ship that can do decent damage with cannons and torpedos at 1 hexes of range, as well as having a sonar for detecting submarines (units without sonar cannot see submarines, and cannot attack them unless revealed). Submarine - A glass cannon unit that can do extremely high damage with torpedos, will likely die once revealed. Cruiser - Your standard bulky option that deals good damage at 2 hexes of range and has great health, they also have good flak for their price so any carrier trying to launch planes at you will risk losses. Light Carrier - Another glass cannon unit, but can use planes to launch bombing runs from far away (planes can be shot down by flak, reducing damage. They do regenerate but it's good to keep in mind). Flagship - Your 'King' ship, if it dies then your run is over. It's essentially a mix between a carrier and a cruiser, with meta proression elements to empower it. There's also your 'tier 2' ships that are much more expensive, those being: Battleship - Extremely bulky, high damage at 3 hexes of range, has great flak, but a very slow unit. Carrier - The light carrier but with higher HP and more planes so losses don't hurt as much. Later on there are the 'Super' varients that could be called 'tier 3' ships, but I haven't gotten to play with them just yet. Overall, extremely solid game for its price point. I look forward to what the updates for this game will be and will continue to play in the meantime.
Completely addictive for people who grew up on hex based tactics and strategy games. Very much just one turn or one mission more type of game.
