It combines all the drawbacks of mobile games and crappy action games. It’s basically a premature baby forced into a single-player format to stop losses because the developer couldn’t maintain the original mobile game plan. - In mobile games, if your character isn’t highly ranked, you can go for a gacha summon, but this game scrapped the gacha. If you train the wrong character, get stuck in the main story, you just have to deal with it. - Weak characters that can’t be used in mobile games are the same here, but in mobile games, weak characters often get maxed out for free, so you don’t usually mess up. - The worst of bad single-player games is the Japanese co-op game trash where you can’t farm higher-level content unless you clear the main story and unlock tasks; this game has mastered that trash completely. - Recovery food in Genshin isn’t required, but this game forces you to pick up everything and makes you figure out recipes with no hints. I mean, in real life, you don’t just wing getting a chef certificate at a tech school, right? So almost everyone who plays seriously ends up cheating and editing food to 999. - Enemies have weird hitboxes and ghost detection everywhere; this game doesn’t expect you to seriously play an action game, it just wants you to stack enough attack power to see who can one-shot first. - I get it, the devs were forced to scrap the monetization plan and release a single-player stop-loss version, so they’re probably bitter like someone heavily invested in LUNA coin. But taking it out on players and watching them suffer is basic quality control failing. - So the later gameplay is monotonous, the maps are tiny, and it’s easy to CTD—it’s really no surprise. Apart from some decent anime-style art, many competent indie games do this better. - You can say ‘no gacha plus anime-game plus open world naturally equals political correctness,’ but that’s not how you judge game quality.
I'm 30 hours in and having so much genuine fun. I also want to clarify that the fact that it has no gacha mechanic is not the strongest aspect of this game by far. Make no mistake that is nice, but the story has far surpassed my expectations, and the characters are great and have unique personalities. Additionally, the combat system is extremely fun and addictive, I honestly have no problem grinding for resources because playing the game itself is just fun. I literally just want more and more content because I am enjoying it that much.
After a long decade, Hound13 dropped their new title. Their previous title Dragon Nest was one of my favourite games of all time. The reason I brought up their previous title is because I find this game more comparable to Dragon Nest over other "open world gacha games" such as Genshin and WuWa. While the structure of the game is similar to these gacha games, your experience is more comparable to Dragon Nest because this is a honest game without the predatory gacha elements. On a sidenote art style, a lot of enemies and abilities feels very nostalgic.
The Monetization
Monetization of the game is very innovative in a sense that there really isn't anything similar out there. I would say it's the strongest point of this game. We'll never know how well this game would have been received if it was an another live service gacha game and it is better that we don't. You can obtain everything in the game at the base game price. No in app purchases. No daily chores. No time gated content. It's worth mentioning that DLC "familiars" (mounts) give some passive boosts to make exploration more convenient but it isn't anything game warping and everything in the game can be still done without those.
Some Context Without Spoilers
Story of the game is not complete but it's left at a good stopping point. Lot of in game systems are locked behind main story progression. Unlocking new characters works similarly. Some characters are locked behind certain story chapters. Others you can unlock with character vouchers you get from completing story chapters or hero stories.
Things That Could Be Improved
The game doesn't have English dub at the moment. (Devs stated that they are working on it.) There is Co-op but it's clearly an afterthought, It's only limited to few instances. Chore achievements in general that is there just to increase player retention. There is no point for these to exist since this is a single player game. An example of these achievements would be "Collect 300 of every single ingredient."
My Thoughts
I've done everything there is to do yet I still boot it up occasionally to run some end game content. One thing that surprised me was how much more there was to do when I was done with the main story. This includes: Building every character with best possible stats. Completing every area, side, hero quest. Completing every mini game and puzzle. Collecting every single chest and cooking recipe. Getting every title through achievements. Needless to say, I enjoyed my time all the way through.
Generic soulless garbage. Just play anything else.
Für 29,99€ TOP Videospiel, einfach der Hammer, macht so viel Spaß Aber leider kein coop Story Modus, es geht wenn nur Raid / Unterwerfung zusammen
DragonSword: Awakening is an anime-style open-world action RPG that offers fast-paced combat and a rich narrative. It successfully removes the predatory elements typical of gacha games. DragonSword: Awakening centers on a hero named Lute who awakens in the ruins of a once-great kingdom. Lute is bound to an ancient sword, a relic of the last dragon knight. The narrative unfolds as Lute embarks on a quest to uncover the fate of the fallen kingdom and confront a dragon that has reawakened after 60 years. Features : - Combat System : The game features a unique character-switching mechanic that allows players to rotate characters mid-combo or signal skills, enhancing combat depth. - Tag-Team Action : Players can unleash spectacular status ailment effects, making battles dynamic and strategic. - Open World : Players explore the continent of Orbis, filled with quests and secrets tied to the lore of six legendary heroes. - Familiars : Familiars play a crucial role in enhancing exploration and mobility throughout the game. Each familiar category offers unique movement abilities and passive bonuses that contribute to a more efficient traversal of the open world. - Online / Offline : You can play completely offline with no internet connection required, or you can choose to play online and invite friends or discord players to join you in online raids and boss battles. There is no current full-on open world multiplayer, but it is listed in the roadmap as an upcoming feature. Note : Although DragonSword: Awakening is out of early access, the game still has more updates on the way. The post-launch roadmap includes four new free heroes arriving sequentially in the second half of 2026, a rift system for dimensional combat, hero requests story expansions, and quality-of-life updates like improved combat feel, photo mode, and a help system.

I really want to like this game because the premise of a gacha-like game without the actual gambling and FOMO elements is amazing, but I cannot give it a thumbs up yet. This game invites comparison to Genshin Impact at every step and sadly it does most of these things worse than it, at least in the beggining when its supposed to grab your attention. Right now this kinda is a case of a 'death by a thousand cuts'. You play this game, you enjoy what you see, the combat is nice, the character designs are nice. Everything should be correct when it comes to the 'main ingredients'. But then you discover the small things that just take away from the overall enjoyment: - the mount system being integrated into the game from the start and replacing things that in other open world games your character can do by default like climbing or gliding. you literally need to mount up to get over any small obstacle, because double jump, climb and all movement options were outsourced to a beetle (and yes it does look as stupid as it sounds) - the missing english voiceover combined with no subtitles for outside of cutscene chatter which makes you feel like you're not included in the conversation if you dont speak Korean - the game is also not in the best technical state as in the first hour of gameplay I've encountered multiple bugs such as not being able to pick up objects if im not playing as Lute or other characters getting stuck in 'lift' animation not being able to interact at all - overall lack of polish. The first act very much invites comparisons to genshin and sadly it loses them. the movement system is weaker because the mount system throws you out of the natural exploration loop, the story is a bit barren, the UI is a bit ugly, the font used for dialogue and quest text is a bit "basic" none of these things is a dealbreaker by itself, but the overall experience that I had when testing this game was "I kinda want to reinstall Wuthering Waves instead, because it's pretty much the same thing, but way more polished" the good thing is that all of this is fixable. and I really hope that in a few patches I will be able to come back and change this review. Right now Dragonsword: Awakening is this weird case of leaving a negative review, but not regretting buying the game, at least for me.
