I love diablo 2, I love this remake, but blizzard can choke on a bag of rancid roaches for forcing you to be online to play this game properly on the steam deck, which is why I bought this game. There's no cloud saves at all, so your offline characters don't get transferred from pc to deck. As for online if your wifi isn't good then there's a 1 second delay between picking up an item and it actually registering. There's also this stupid online check which forces you to login at least once every 30 days otherwise you're not allowed to play the game you purchased. Why even have an offline mode if you won't allow me to stay offline? I just want to play the stupid game without being nagged all the time jfc
Cannot play offline even after logging to battle.net and launching the game online once to properly activate it. I tried to play while on a trip without any internet connection available and the game won't even launch. I thought it was possible when reading some other comments but it was not to be. Starting steam in offline mode & trying to play this game is not possible. This kind of publisher/developer behavior with their permanent online connection requirements or Denuvo DRM is a Blight on the Gaming Ecosystem. It really is disheartening. The remade graphics are nice and D2 has a really good gameplay loop; but I can only play it when I'm not on the move. Not angry. Just sad...
A Classic for a Reason
I haven't played Diablo II before, but have always heard about how it's the best Action-RPG of all time. I've been waiting for the Steam release of the remaster for 5 years and finally, we have it. What took you so long Activision? Now please bring Starcraft, Diablo I and III, WoW... even though I am not interested in MMO.
Gameplay and Remaster
The remaster does exactly what it should. It modernizes the visuals while staying faithful to the original game. It still feels like Diablo II, just much easier to go back to today or get on it for the first time. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3799391080 What surprised me the most is how much better the progression feels compared to Diablo IV. Every level, every new skill point and every piece of gear actually feels rewarding. You're constantly looking for your next upgrade instead of waiting for meaningless stat increases. The pacing is also much better. It gets into the action quickly and never wastes your time with unnecessary systems or live-service mechanics. Diablo IV has smoother combat, but I enjoyed Diablo II's overall game design much more.
Finally, No Lag
The biggest improvement for me isn't even the visuals. No constant rubberbanding. No random lag spikes. No always-online nonsense ruining the experience like Diablo IV constantly did. I can finally enjoy Diablo without fighting the servers every few seconds. It's crazy that a 20-year-old game gives me a smoother experience than Blizzard's newest Diablo. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3799391262
Final Thoughts
Diablo II is still the better Diablo. Diablo IV may have prettier graphics and more modern animations, but Diablo II has better progression, better pacing and a much more rewarding gameplay loop. Some classics really never get old. Classic game, I played this on the cds i played it on battle.net, i bought and played it here. 9/10 But if battle.net can import my characters and carry over my account, why can't i just play the game I already own on battle.net on steam? Why do I have to buy it again? Is this skyrim? I now own like 4 editions of this game lol.
Cannot play the game I purchased and own unless I log in online and verify my license. Instant no, do not buy this. Sail the high seas.

You need to be online to validate game. I bought it on Steam, I guess Steam has validated it already, but that's not all. You can't even turn off the game to log in to Battlenet. You have to force close it, because they haven't added button to login or turn off the game. What a joke of a company Blizzard became.
Now I understand why Diablo II is a staple of gaming history. I tried it for the first time recently, with zero nostalgia attached, and I'm completely hooked. Complex doesn't automatically mean good. Diablo II is deep and complex, yet somehow incredibly simple at its core. Explore, fight, loot, upgrade, progress. The gameplay loop is ridiculously satisfying. But what I appreciate most is how restrained it feels. It's dim. It's dark. It can be slow. It isn't constantly trying to light up my dopamine receptors with flashing rewards, notifications, battle passes and endless noise. So many modern games feel like slot machines at a casino, constantly fighting for your attention. Diablo II just lets the game speak for itself. And there's something incredibly refreshing about playing a COMPLETE game. No Early Access. No waiting six months for the next content drop. No FOMO telling me I need to play this week or I'll miss something forever. The game is simply there. As it was. As it is. You progress because progressing feels rewarding, not because a timer told you to. I'm extremely pleased with my first Diablo experience. Decades later, I finally understand why this GAME is LEGENDARY.
Must be online, must have a Battle.net account to play. Absolute non-starter. I just wanted to play a revamped Diablo in peace.
This stupid license only works when linked to BattleNet. Shame, I was looking forward to reliving this experience. Could have been prevented if I wasn't optimistic and actually read the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ requirement.
