this is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ greatest game ever please make it run better on steamdeck.
Decent indie game. It's not overly complicated. It reminds me of an old Newgrounds shoot 'em up. Fun to kill some time with, especially when you're in-between bigger games.
Apparently I got and played this game the month it came out 14 years ago... Installing and playing it again after all that time today I legitimately don't know why. It's (still?) only $3, has a variety of modes, the presentation is kind of cool, and the dev has continued to update it for more than 10 years(!?) including apparently natively porting it to Linux at some point, but none of that changes the fact that this is just a bad game. Among other things hitboxes are super dubious (generous?) so you can trivialize the game just by being above or below an enemy and spamming melee attack over and over again... or you know, just ignoring enemies and running away, looting and buying medkits and skills. I also was dealing with crashing every like 5-10 minutes on Win11 (have Linux systems but too lazy to check if that's better). In particular every time I looked at skills in the shop the game would crash within a minute. I'm assuming this was a .net problem but the usual ways to resolve those didn't stop the game from crashing. I kind of forgot how bad .net is now that I spend so little time on Windows... Almost makes me want to go back and apologize to all the unity slop I've played and called out for being such lately since at least those games didn't crash constantly. As to why I kept playing despite the crashes: morbid curiosity and trading cards. Steam trading cards probably weren't worth 2 hours of my life on a Tuesday, but it was kind of interesting to come back to a random game after so much time had passed and "beat" it.

My brother was over on a Friday night, and we were looking for a couch co-op game to play. I dug through my vast library of mostly never-installed games to find something we could both jump into, and that’s when we decided to give Dead Pixels a go. Maybe the game is better in single-player, or maybe it’s just showing its age at 11 years old, but the two-player experience was middle of the road at best. Enemy variety is minimal, and we tore through them with ease as we moved from building to building scavenging for ammo and weapons. Searching buildings and scavenging seem to be the core gameplay loop—but in co-op, it’s a clunky mess. Managing inventory in two-player is especially frustrating. Deciding what you do and don’t want, waiting for the other person to reach a door so you can both enter, becoming over-encumbered, and constantly juggling items back and forth with your partner quickly becomes tiresome. If I had to say one good thing about Dead Pixels, it’s that it ran without any issues on the Steam Deck.
This is one of the most fun games I've played. I had this game as a kid on my XBOX 360, which I haven't been able to use. Recently, I got my laptop which I've used to play this, this game is easy to just hop into for a while and have fun. PROS: Dead Pixels can get really difficult towards the end of the normal game mode. The grind needed to succeed is very fun and rewarding. This game has an amazing soundtrack. The gameplay never gets too old as even though nothing new will happen, it has replay value similar to arcade games. I REALLY love this game. The controls are easy and simple to follow (I play on controller so I wouldn't know how keyboard users feel) CONS: The first couple of streets you go through are really boring, due to lack of weapons, zombies, and resources, as well as your character being super slow. You don't get second chances after you die, which can be frustrating at some points.
