The Good: Daylight establishes a solid atmospheric foundation with effective lighting effects, unsettling audio design, and well-crafted story fragments that gradually unveil an intriguing mystery. The contemporary smartphone flashlight mechanic adds a modern touch to the horror experience, and the later forest environments demonstrate the game's unrealized potential. The Bad: The procedurally generated hospital sections suffer from poor level design that leads to aimless wandering and mounting frustration. What starts as effective atmospheric horror quickly devolves into predictable, repetitive jump scares that lose their impact. Enemies become mere obstacles rather than genuine threats, while tedious box-pushing puzzles feel like transparent padding. Technical issues and performance problems further undermine the experience, and the lack of clear direction kills momentum before the game finds its footing. Bottom Line: Daylight squanders its promising horror foundation through weak gameplay mechanics, unoriginal design choices, and repetitive exploration that prioritizes cheap scares over substance. While the initial atmosphere impresses, the game's reliance on formulaic horror tropes and poorly implemented procedural generation results in a monotonous experience that feels shorter than its already brief 3-hour runtime. The stronger second half arrives too late to salvage what could have been a compelling horror experience. Best for: Horror enthusiasts willing to endure significant gameplay flaws for occasional atmospheric moments. Skip if: You expect engaging mechanics, technical polish, or innovative scares from your horror games.
