Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.

Cuphead is an incredibly fun boss rush game that perfectly captures that old rubberhose cartoon style, something no game has ever achieved since. The main appeal of Cuphead, aside from the visuals, are the dozens of unique and challenging bosses, each one filled with charm and attention to detail. You got everything from a flying woman turning into the moon, a genie hurling his treasures at you, a german world war 1 rat, and Satan himself, every boss features new and interesting ideas and a fun fight. There are also different weapons and perks that can be acquired, letting you adjust a build you are comfortable with, or maybe even optimize your loadout for whatever boss it is you are facing, as different weapons have different strengths that can be effective against some bosses, and ineffective against others. Now, to buy these weapons and trinkets you require coins. And coins are mostly found in run and gun levels, which are definitely the weakest part of the game. There are six run and gun levels which are somewhat short jump and run levels, based on themes and gimmicks that align with the world they are found in. And as great as the bosses are, the run and gun levels were always just kinda there. They aren't bad by any means, but they aren't great either. They don't really add to the game in any meaningful way, as they just go through the motions. Just something you gotta get over with, before you get to fight more bosses. Thankfully, the DLC got rid of the run and gun levels, and instead focused entirely on the bosses, featuring some of the best fights in the entire game, as well as new gimmick fights that put your parry skills to the test. Cuphead is a great game, filled to the brim with love, care, and attention to detail. I recommend it to anyone who is not afraid of a difficult challenge. 8.5/10
