An honest review of Clawed from the perspective of a long time fan and experienced game dev.
-- Will update as updates come out for the game. Synopsis - In it's current state, the game offers a lot already. But most players will experience game breaking issues that are impossible to ignore and could cause the experience to feel worse.
Should you buy the game in its current state?
If you are someone who is debating whether or not to, then not at the moment. But check back every couple of months. If you know you intend to play it, then purchase it now. It’s on sale and the price will go up soon. As someone who has followed Flatrock for a long time, I know they’re a company with solid values who are trying to do their best to do right by their player base and I’m confident they’ll patch the game into a better state as quickly as they can.
Should you play the game in its current state?
For most players, no. You should wait until some of the glaring issues mentioned have been fixed before giving it a go. If you have a high tolerance for game breaking issues on release and are planning on a single player run, yes. Otherwise, hold off until some of the bigger issues have been fixed.
What type of player is this for?
Clawed is a game for a wide variety of players, most notably:

Dinosaur Lovers
Horror Game Lovers
Game Developers
Story Driven Players
And anyone over the age of 25
I can confidently say that this is a game anyone in this demographic can and will enjoy, but in its current state the issues are causing a lot of people to have a poor experience their first go around.
Issues that must be fixed ASAP to avoid a complete flop:
Co-op issues

Not being able to inv friends to the game successfully
Spawning at the beginning of the game with no fast way to get back to your friends
Inventory state changing between re-loads for different players
De-sync issues for items in the world are abundant
Save state issues

Saves are too far apart for the overall survivability when faced with threats in the game leading players to not enjoy their playthroughs. (Personally I prefer this because I like when death actually carries weight in a game, but most people are trying to play the game, get through it, and move on to the next one).
Saves are not properly being saved over the correct slots
There are no backups automatically saved for previous save states resulting in players locking themselves in unwinnable conditions occasionally (especially in multiplayer).
Map collision issues

There are a lot of areas where you can get permanently stuck which completely removes progress or forces a game restart.
Lots of objects and meshes have invisible collision
Enemy AI path finding could use improvement for things such as small height differences. I always Recommend using A* over Navmesh.z
Many users have reported issues where they get stuck in the ground while loading in from a save point
Several users have reported that getting knocked around by dinos pushes them inside the geometry
General gameplay issues

Quest tracking does not stay consistent or always properly track checkpoints
Inventory bugs such as item duplication on save state or game reload
Some players have reported that some of the logic in puzzles is causing incorrect interactions throughout some of the main story quests

Pros

The game has A LOT of ground to cover and tons to explore.
You can choose between first or third person camera views at any point in time, and both have solid animations and information that provide good feedback as to what is happening on screen.
Some of the gun sound effects and animations feel especially satisfying.
The lore of the world is deep and fun to discover
The game’s community is very supportive and helpful
It has potential to become a GOAT indie title despite release issues
You will be scared. VERY scared no matter who you are. They hit every type of phobia (hopefully not arachnophobia though for my sake…)
Travelling around the map is entertaining and enjoyable.
Stealth is minimal in an environment where stealth would NOT ACTUALLY WORK. Don’t believe me? Try sneaking behind your dog or cat and see if they notice...
Some of the enemy AI do feel unique. Such as raptors calling for help when injured or hunting you in packs.
The park feels well thought out and designed similar to how I would imagine an actual dinosaur theme park might exist.
The game DOES NOT HOLD YOUR HAND. There is not a waymark to follow to your next objective. Pick a god and thank them for that. It lets you build your own adventures and experience, or solve the puzzles of your own merit.
The dinosaur encounters are not static or scripted in a lot of cases. Many of the dinosaurs are freely roaming the park and you could see them at any moment in time, which leads to a lot of moments you’ll be happy you’re wearing brown pants while you play.
There is very clear inspiration from some of the GOAT classic action horror/survival titles
There is a monument to remember the actor who played Dr. Grant in JP. RIP, and mad respect to the devs for adding this in.
The devs are clearly dinosaur lovers through and through.
Overall gameplay loop is fun and solid!

Cons
(This list excludes current game breaking issues since those are already covered above)

The biggest and most glaring, is that you can’t go down waterslides.
The enemy and dinosaur AI don’t feel particularly unique or true to their expected behavior in many cases. I.e. hunting for sport is not something predators generally do. They hunt to eat or kill to protect their territory. There are times when predators should see you and just be cautious rather than instantly try to go after you if their nest/territory is not nearby. There are also times they should keep careful and cautious watch of you, following you, without attacking you in order to remain safe themselves but ready to fight if they need to. (Granted that last one is hard to do without making players think the AI is just broken).
There are not a lot of solutions to resolve problem scenarios with different dinosaurs. Your options in almost every situation are run, hide, kill, or tranq in every situation instead of being able to utilize expected physical features of specific species. I.e:

Standing still in front of a T-rex that has already seen you is a great way to die. But when one is exploring around looking for you, standing still would be a fun way to try and stay hidden to outsmart the dino.
Alternatively, smacking a shark in the eye is a great way to get it to leave you alone, so it would be cool if you could do stuff like that to a megalodon.
It would also be fun to see a sarco death roll if it captures you.

Conveyance in some areas could use improvement in the early sections of the game.

Performance and optimization/tips

For most PC's that match the recommended specs this game seems to clock decent framerates at or above 60fps.
This game does have pretty hefty CPU and GPU load and could use some rendering optimization
Many users experience poor framerates and stutters early on while the shader cache builds. It takes a long time for it to build, so give it ~20 mins before you hop into the game if you experience this issue.
Small tip to help some:

Turn off lumen lighting. UE5 lumen is poorly optimized in the Unreal Engine.
This game shouldn't have been released until it was finish, im tired of gaming companies releasing games and then working on fixing them while the game is running
I saw the mixed reviews and read through several of them and at first I thought the game might be terrible, considering how some commenters are literally trying their best to verbally tear the game to pieces. But then I remembered watching a playthrough of the games demo by Fooster on YouTube and instead of believing reviews from people that expect triple A game quality from an Indi 2 person developer team, I decided to try out the game myself. I was not disappointed with this game at all, hopefully the developers read these reviews though because I do have a couple issues to mention for them so that it hopefully helps them fix these issues. First, I will agree that the grapple should either be heavily revised and reworked or worst case removed, currently it is a very difficult tool to use and once your connected to a grapple point you have no control over where you swing to at all lol. Second, one of the biggest issues I currently have for this game is the clipping into Dinosaurs during fights or collision detection between the player character and the Dino's, all the Dino's in the game are fun to fight but when some of them get to close your character sometimes winds up inside them and they can still hit you but your weapon (which you hold out in front of you) is no longer within the Dino's hitbox detection, also you cannot get out of them once your stuck inside the Dino. And last, there is also the issue of crafting materials and weapons respawning (sometimes within seconds after picking them up in some instances) throughout the whole game. I've done 2 playthroughs already, one on survival and I have a stash so full of weapons (like 9 to 10 pistols and an equal number of shotguns and other weapons) and crafting materials that I eventually stopped picking up stuff. I have a feeling this was not an intended mechanic for the game especially on survival. Pretty sure this may be due to a desyncing error or respawning error, both while the game is running and when loading back into the game after being off for awhile. Yes the game has a few bugs, a 2 man developer team is not going to catch every little bug/glitch that pops up before deciding to release the game. Most of said glitches/bugs are IMO small and bearable as well as easily ignored for the most part. Overall though the game is fun and is very beautiful scenery wise. I can see the effort that was put into creating a Jurassic Park like park in a survival horror action style game, though I would have to say this games park is way cooler. Aside from the issues I mentioned above though, most of the gameplay mechanics are good if not great. I look forward to any updates from this developer team for this game as I plan to play often. A last note I loved finding the little Tribute shrine to Sam Neill near the the Prehistoria control building.
I would give this a solid 6/10 right now with hopes that the devs could make some simple changes to push it to a 9/10 and it really is not asking for much its quality of life fixes and bugs that should have been addressed before launch. Let me give you my honest rundown on the game and some issues you will run into. Lets start with bugs. Audio bugs: A great example of this is walking into cages that are open cancel out rain effects and sound, this is a simple thing but in the scheme of things ruins the immersion when you walk into an open cage that rain would come through the giant holes no problem but its like your in a sound proof shielded room that kills immersion, there are a number of other audio bugs regarding the dinos and things that stick out that need work Save bugs: Save points will bug out and flat out not work as in you click save and nothing happens it doesnt advance you to the next area, im only 2.9 hours into the gave and have had 2 of them do this thats two to many in 2 hours... Inventory and crafting bugs: Items will show that you can pick them up they glow and it takes JUST the right spot like you have to fidget around for a bit on some of them to get in the JUST RIGHT position to pick them up its awful, Also crafting I made 9 mags and all 9 vanished upon creation as in it even registered with the prompt they were made and NOPE no in my inventory not on the ground nothing, this happened with a few other items but crafting ammo and health supplies in this game is crucial so this one is a BIG mistake and needs to be fixed ASAP Combat and Dinos: The game is not optimized I have great specs and I got it to a working point but combat gets very laggy and glitchy causing dinos to do massive damage before you can really react because of lag and tearing issues. Also at one point i had a pachy get stuck on a door and hit me from across the map and kill me and my friend playing like he got stuck in a glitch that gave him a map wide hit box that killed me and my friend and we could see him but were easily 50 feet away All in all though its a fun puzzle based game that has a great concept going on YOU GO IN AND YOU FIX JURRASIC PARK very cool, fun cinematics and things going on I mean its really really great at its core but it needs work. I hope the devs see this review and others like it and make the necessary changes because this is GOOD but it has potential to be great!
I was **EXTREMELY excited** to play this game after watching all the pre-release videos. The trailers had me thinking, *“This is it. This is the game I’ve been waiting for!”* The graphics looked amazing, the gameplay looked smooth, and apparently I temporarily forgot that pre-release videos are basically the gaming industry’s version of a dating profile. 😂 Then I bought the game. **BIG MISTAKE.** The game starts, and immediately I’m sitting there thinking, *“Okay… did I accidentally select the ‘Play on a computer from 1995’ graphics setting?”* The graphics were absolutely terrible. Everything looked like it had been rendered through a microwave. Characters, dinosaurs, weapons… I swear some of the textures looked like they were still downloading from AOL. **1st STRIKE!** ⚾ But I thought, *“Alright, maybe the graphics aren’t everything. Let’s see how the gameplay feels.”* OH… IT FELT. The controls were so jumpy and clunky that I wasn’t sure if I was playing a dinosaur-shooting game or trying to control a shopping cart with one bad wheel. Movement felt delayed, jerky, and completely unnatural. I was pressing buttons and waiting to see if the game agreed with my decision. At one point, I moved the character and thought, *“Did I just lag, or did my character travel back in time?”* It felt like I was playing on a computer from **1995 that was running Windows 95 with 47 programs open and somebody was downloading a song on Napster.** **2nd STRIKE!** ⚾⚾ Then came the part I was actually excited about… **THE GUNS AND DINOSAURS!** Surely this is where the game redeems itself, right? Wrong. Apparently, my character attended the same firearms training academy as a potato because I couldn't properly change weapons or reload when I needed to. Nothing says “immersive gaming experience” quite like standing face-to-face with a dinosaur while desperately trying to convince the game to let you reload your weapon. *CLICK… CLICK… CLICK…* Dinosaur: 🦖 Me: “RELOAD!!!” Game: “No.” Then, inevitably… **BAM!** I’m dead. And now I get to go all the way back to the last save point, hoping it wasn’t 45 minutes ago because apparently the game believes autosaving is an unnecessary luxury. At that point, I wasn't fighting dinosaurs anymore. **I was fighting the game itself.** **3rd STRIKE!!!** ⚾⚾⚾ YOU'RE OUT! I went from being incredibly excited about this game to staring at my screen trying to request a refund and I may send the developers a strongly worded letter written in crayon. The pre-release videos had me ready to fight dinosaurs, explore the world, and have an absolute blast. The actual game had me fighting **graphics, controls, weapons, reload buttons, save points, and my own patience.** Honestly, the dinosaurs weren't even the most frustrating part of the game. **The game itself was the final boss.** 😂 Needless to say, this one was a HUGE disappointment. Maybe future updates will fix some of these issues, but right now, I'm giving this game **3 strikes and you're OUT!** And somewhere, my 1995 computer is sitting in the corner saying: *"See? I told you I wasn't that bad."* 😂
This game has a great concept, one that I really was looking forward to playing. We loaded in and got about 30 minutes into the game and it crashed. Loaded up my save, my buddy joins me again only to find that the gun he had is now gone. The save should have saved both my stuff and his but it only saved mine. The first encounter of dinosaurs we came into were also a little glitched. They came charging, we shot them, they go to sleep and disappear right in front of you but you still hear them now sleeping.. This game has so much potential and yet honestly is no where near ready for players sadly. Maybe in the future we will return to Prehistoria but for now, I've gone to guest services and requested our tickets be refunded.
Recommended — but expect some launch-day rough edges. I've played a few hours now, and I really like Clawed. The atmosphere, environmental design, graphics and especially the ambient sound are excellent. The game genuinely manages to make me uneasy while exploring, which is exactly what I wanted from a dinosaur survival-horror game. The game is clearly still rough around the edges in places, and some gameplay options are not yet available — the Game menu itself states that additional options will be added in future updates. However, I've seen several negative reviews claiming that the game has no settings at all, or specifically that there is no FOV setting. This is not correct. The game has Audio, Video and Controls settings. FOV can be found under Settings → Controls → General, where there are separate sliders for Field of View and Field of View First Person. Both first-person and third-person camera modes are available as well. I have encountered one reproducible UI issue so far: at 2560×1600 (16:10) the map interface is incorrectly scaled/cropped horizontally, with parts of the full island map and map legend extending beyond the visible UI area. Switching to 2560×1440 (16:9) immediately fixes the map layout. Gameplay itself renders correctly at 2560×1600, so this appears to be a map UI scaling issue rather than a general rendering problem. Aside from that, my experience so far has been very good. The world feels like it was made with genuine care, the atmosphere and sound design are fantastic, and exploring the island is exactly the kind of experience I hoped this game would provide. Yes, it's a new release and there are things that need polishing. If you're very sensitive to launch issues, waiting for patches is perfectly reasonable. But some of the criticism currently being posted concerns settings and features that actually do exist. For the price, I'm very happy with what I've played so far, and I'm looking forward to continuing.
Oh boy - where does one begin with an experience like this one? Unlike other players, I don't hate this game because it failed to meet impossible, heaven-high AAA expectations. Nor do I care that I couldn’t use the slides (its amusing that this was a deal-breaker for so many! as we have plenty of "poolrooms" games if you just want to simulate using a bunch of cool slides). In fact, I don't hate this game at all. I thoroughly enjoyed the maps, the actual theme-park was executed as well as it could be without be jurassic park/world-derivative. I also appreciate the genuine love and craft that went into building Clawed. However, it has glaring structural issues that brought me to the absolute brink of (figurative) violence. What I don't like are the nightmarishly-employed cartography mechanics (which to me, are one of the primary characteristics of the entire experience - which is bloody weird) built into the gameplay. To reverse-engineer a single task, one is forced to juggle two or three different maps simultaneously while referencing a completely separate map-legend document (usually the legends are ON the maps). It creates tedious operational overload when i should be exploring the park NOT figuring out the map (its like a broken SNL sketch). I also don't love the choice to give some dinosaurs total free-roam of the park when the AI isn't savvy enough to make that free-roam look natural (watching them clamber onto the edge of a sidewalk is catastrophic). Aside from the raptors, which can stay as they are (they're too stealthy for me to catch them acting stupid-which is admittedly awesome), the rest of the dinosaurs act clunky (but look fantastic!) and need to be reconsidered. They would have looked vastly more appealing on pre-rendered paths and scripted animation loops. Choosing to turn the core game into a series of fetch-quest missions was a novice choice, especially because it is rather hit-or-miss in this case. Sometimes these fetch quests feel organic and integral to the unfolding story, while other times they feel like tedious, immersion-breaking padding. The total lack of clear instruction, combined with the inability to clearly infer information from a convoluted multi-map system, left me on the verge of rage-quitting during what should have been totally innocuous moments (e.g. searching for a switch-which took 1.5 hours!). I still recommend it for the environmental craft, but be prepared to fight the mechanics just to figure out your next objective. Luckily this is an early access game with a developer who seems to both care about his project and the community reaction to it. SO imagine that most of my issues will be resolved or at least smoothed out within the coming months. There's a fantastic experience to be had here but in its current manifestation one only gets glimpses of it. In its current state: 6/10 but there is great potential for it to grow into an 8/10 by the time of full-release.
I...don't know how they went from such an incredible demo that looked amazing to...whatever this is. It looks unpolished, it looks rushed, the graphics seem no where near what the demo was and then the incredible game breaking bugs. Even with the "Unstuck" button, it didn't work for my friends and all it did was send me back to the beginning...OF THE GAME. Then every time I tried to reload it shoved me right back to the beginning...OF THE GAME. The demo was truly wonderful and terrifying and had me so incredibly excited for this game and the full release has disappointed me to the level of No Man's Sky's release. So in it's current state, I cannot in good conscious recommend this as a multiplayer experience (haven't tried the singleplayer.) I hope they do fix all the game breaking bugs because I am still wanting this Jurassic Park like survival experience. But for now, maybe keep it on your wishlist and keep an eye on the updates.
Has great potential but is in such a buggy terrible state, I cannot recommend it. I was able to get past loot disappearing on the ground, clipping, coop game's not saving your stuff, occasional crashing.. But the nail in the coffin was being on a railcar, and it decided to stop halfway through a door to which we were unable to reach the controls because the door blocked them. having us to restart the game, in which we lost everything. Please save your money until they decide to fix this game.
