South Korea's anime culture is not bad.

Unfortunately cannot not play this game. Black screen as soon as combat starts and by looking online it seems that there is no real solution, as well as being a known problem.
there is, at the core of it, a good game here. but boy do i have some things that just annoy me. first of all : controller support. it's pretty bad. navigating the different menus is subpar and even if it works, it's annoying. it's also pretty small. but it ties into a bigger point, the UX! past the UI being... annoying to deal with (controller or not), you have an inventory but also you have a menu you can open to also manipulate your inventory. but also level your characters and micromanage them. except there's no way to just "see" everything at once? or perform operations faster, especially because the UI doesn't feel responsive at times? the game is overly granular in where the information is displayed and how to access it and interact with it and it gets grating really fast. another point that really annoyed me is the presentation. the game feels split in half on this : a lot of effort seemingly went into characters, their designs and even things like cut-in CGs! good portraits! but the sharp contrast with the rest of the game just increases the gap and i could feel it. we go between cool as hell CGs to interacting with semitransparent squares and menus. and it's made even worse because there's a lot of word vomit on display here. game pingpongs between keywords and just paragraphs of texts that while readable and understandable feel clunky to read at times, especially through a UI made to exist and not much past that. i guess a last point of annoyance is the running around maps! ok i guess there's something hidden here or there once in a while but with how many runs you'll end up doing it kind of just feels like a chore because you're going to do everything anyway. if the areas were significantly more different, i'd be more lenient, but they all play the same, and so it does not feel particularly great. but despite all the complaining here, there's some meaty gameplay here. this is a cardbuilder roguelike and even if there's a lot of word vomit, there's a decently big cast of characters on display, all with their unique mechanics that you can interweave with how other characters work. there's some very cool interactions and with the meager amount of hours i've put in i was able to kind of peek behind the curtains and see the potential on display and i can only imagine climbing difficulties and mastering what characters can do, you can get some pretty insane stuff going, and this is without even going into the various mechanics the game will throw at you whether in terms of regular enemies or bosses with a whole mechanic behind them. in the same vein, there's something interesting in the story. a lot of roguelikes will build a world as setdressing and kind of leave it at that and not ask you to think about it, but chrono ark does weave story and gameplay interestingly enough for a roguelike. if you've played any amount of video games, i do not think it's going to floor you, but it's nice to feel like there's an actual *story* going on here. is there more good than bad here for the average person? yeah probably. i tend to be a bit more picky with games and get annoyed easily with some things (especially poor controller support). i do still think it's worth your time, but if you are sick and tired of deckbuilder roguelikes i would still probably avoid it? if you want narrative experiences, there are tons out there that are not tied to deckbuilders that you can enjoy much more leisurely.
Best-in-class deck-building roguelike with stunning anime visuals. Lots of characters to choose from, enabling you to build your own strategy/synergy with the cards available to them. A story that keeps you engaged and could hold its own as a visual novel - none of that vagueposting many other roguelike games fall victim to. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on Al Fine and the upcoming Deception Engine!
its criminal how low traction this game gets, an unexpected favorite of mine and now my most recent timesink
A delightful deckbuilder with a moving story. This game easily eclipses games like "Slay the Spire" for me.
