Castle In The Darkness is a fun and challenging shout out to the early days of video games! It's an action exploration platformer with some RPG elements, much like games from the Castlevania or Metroid series. It's super fast-paced, challenging, and full of secrets!

Entrei achando que ia encontrar somente resquícios da Jóia Bruta, que foi lapidada até se torna Astalon - Tears of the Earth, e me deparei com The Evil Within Modo AKUMU Pixel 2D KKKKK JOGÃO! What a horrible night to have a curse
Castle in the Darkness foi uma ótima surpresa!

A fun little mapless metroidvania. Has damn good music. Has a bunch of fun references to older classic games. It's only real flaw is it's overreliance on insta-kill traps. Like 98% of my deaths to in this game were to some variety of instant kill trap like spikes or falling spikes you have half a second to react to. Thats not difficulty, thats memorization and tedium. Outside of that the game is just really charming and fun.
Recommend; But Some Aspects are a bit Rough Initial technical setup took a bit of time to get a DS4 controller working; also weirdly the game defaults to both sound and music at zero volume. Music and sound volume seems to fade in and out for no rhyme or reason; one minute its fine the next I could barely hear the music at all. As for the game itself it takes heavy inspiration from the best and worst aspects of the 8-bit console era. The game expects the player to have heavy domain knowledge from the era; somewhat lesser known tactics such a damage boost jumping are actually required in places; or having to hold jump after bouncing off an enemy increasing the bounce height. Fantasy walls are also present (some are artistically hinted, a handful are not). Heavy usage of one-hit death spikes and pits (sometimes completely offscreen); which shockingly become even more common towards the endgame. This makes the blind playthru feel pretty bad at times getting "gotcha!" by falling spikes. Some scenes require very precise platforming. The game areas are pretty expansive; with locked off/ability gated sections but you'll have to remember everything as the game provides no mapping function (Thankfully you can find fan made maps if needed). In total, I think they went too far for exploration difficultly when you combine it all together. Character movement feel is best described as slippery; its not ice physics but it doesn't feel great either. Combat encounters are rarely very challenging; with the exception of one of the later last bosses. Instead I took the majority of my deaths to spikes. One standout feature was the sprite art changes with weapon equipment which I thought was great. Even though I'm still recommending Castle In The Darkness I score it in the 7 out of 10 range.
This game was...well it was something. Pros: - Great chiptune music. - Using melee weapons is *fast*. You can stab basically as fast as you can click the attack button. - Movement is also relatively quick, and this combined with the jumping made for some satisfying platforming. - The artwork is very authentically NES, and the references to other games were great. - The game rewards exploration well, with hidden bosses and more powerful gear. Cons - This game is difficult, and filled with trolls. Like pressing a button to that unblocks progress will also cause spikes to appear where you need to go without warning, or offscreen things insta-killing you. Some of it was funny (destroying the castlevania torches was a highlight), but some of it felt just plain mean spirited when most of them kill you immediately. - Even outside the trolls, the game difficulty is rough. It's clear this is intentional, multiple achievements are rewarded for hitting different death numbers. But getting sent back to a far off save point and backtracking, and remembering all the specific dangers and trolls can be a challenge. Part of this I think is that weapon/spell damage is extremely important, and if you go somewhere early you may just be doing next to no damage to enemies. - The platforming in this came can be a bit strange. You have to hold the jump button longer than expected to get the final pixels out of a jump and get up on a ledge. I got used to it but it feels a little off compared to other platformers. - The screen transitions in this game mostly work, but occasionally they had this very strange effect like the game was showing multiple other game screens for a few frames. This doesn't really cause issues but is disorienting. Also, enemy attacks and objects can sometimes transfer through screen transitions, which makes for some unexpected projectiles. - Probably the most annoying, to play with a controller on this game I had to do some weird settings stuff I didn't even know existed. I think if you want an Old Nintendo Hard(tm) troll metroidvania-lite with a lot of jank and a few good moments, you might like this. Otherwise, there are many other more fair and better-feeling games that don't take as much effort to play well.
