Brother Hai’s Pho Restaurant is a compact Vietnamese psychological horror game that turns the familiar routine of preparing and selling food into the starting point for an increasingly strange mystery. Developed and published by marisa0704, it mixes first-person exploration, light restaurant mechanics, dark comedy, puzzles, and narrative horror within a distinctly Vietnamese setting. The result is less like a conventional restaurant simulator and more like a short interactive horror story in which ordinary work provides a deceptively comfortable backdrop for events that gradually become disturbing. Players take control of Anh Hai, a man operating a small pho restaurant in a village located in Hanoi’s Dan Phuong District. His daily routine revolves around welcoming customers and preparing their orders, giving the opening portion an intentionally mundane quality. Pho preparation involves dealing with different ingredients and variations rather than simply pressing a single button to complete an order. These activities are not intended to provide the complexity of a dedicated cooking simulator. Instead, they establish Anh Hai's normal life and allow the player to settle into a predictable routine before the story begins undermining that sense of security. The Vietnamese setting is one of the strongest aspects of the experience. Rather than placing its horror inside another generic abandoned hospital, laboratory, or haunted mansion, the game draws personality from local surroundings, food, language, humor, and everyday community life. The retro-style 3D graphics reinforce the unusual atmosphere. Characters and environments have a deliberately simple appearance, yet that visual roughness contributes to the uncanny feeling when familiar locations begin appearing threatening. It demonstrates how a small production can create a recognizable identity without relying on photorealistic graphics. As the story progresses, apparently ordinary events give way to suspicious encounters and increasingly unsettling discoveries. Anh Hai becomes caught in circumstances involving the village, its inhabitants, and elements connected to his own history. The horror works because the game does not completely abandon its humorous or absurd personality when darker developments begin. Comedy and tension frequently coexist, creating unpredictable tonal shifts that distinguish the adventure from horror games that maintain constant seriousness. Some players may find these transitions deliberately bizarre, but they are fundamental to the game's personality. Mr. Gold, Anh Hai's dog, provides another important element. Players can interact with the animal, and the relationship eventually becomes more significant than a simple decorative companion. Having someone vulnerable for Anh Hai to care about gives the protagonist a personal reason to become involved in events beyond simple curiosity. It also creates emotional stakes within a game that might otherwise be remembered primarily for its unusual humor and horror imagery. Exploration and narrative choices become increasingly important outside the restaurant. Players investigate their surroundings, encounter characters, solve relatively straightforward problems, and make decisions that can influence the outcome. Four endings provide a meaningful reason to return after completing the story once. Different conclusions encourage experimentation and help compensate for the relatively brief length of an individual playthrough. Discovering everything therefore requires more than simply following the most obvious path from beginning to end. The short duration is simultaneously an advantage and one of the game's clearest limitations. A typical run can be completed quite quickly, making this closer to a horror short story than a full-length adventure. Players expecting extensive restaurant expansion, elaborate business management, character progression, or a long campaign should adjust their expectations accordingly. The pho restaurant primarily functions as an interactive narrative device. Cooking establishes normality, introduces the setting, and provides contrast against the disturbing events rather than forming an endlessly replayable management system. Its presentation similarly reflects the scale of an independent project. Animations and character models can appear rough compared with larger commercial releases, and interactions are intentionally straightforward. However, the simplicity rarely prevents the game from communicating its ideas. In some situations, the crude retro appearance actually strengthens the horror by making characters and environments slightly unnatural even before anything explicitly frightening happens. Cinematic sequences and scripted moments become more prominent as events escalate, allowing the latter portions to feel substantially more dramatic than the modest beginning suggests. Vietnamese voice acting helps preserve the cultural identity of the experience, while English subtitles and interface support make the narrative accessible to players who do not understand Vietnamese. Keeping the original spoken language is particularly appropriate because the setting and local personality are integral to the game's appeal. The translation allows international players to understand what is happening without stripping away the linguistic character that contributes to the atmosphere. Steam Deck compatibility should currently be treated as unverified rather than guaranteed. There is no official Steam Deck Verified or Playable rating to provide firm assurance of complete handheld compatibility. The game's modest graphical demands may make it a reasonable candidate for operation through SteamOS and Proton, but unofficial functionality can differ from Valve-certified support. Steam Deck users should therefore expect that manual adjustments, alternative controller configurations, or compatibility troubleshooting could potentially be necessary. Brother Hai’s Pho Restaurant ultimately succeeds through personality rather than scale. Its restaurant mechanics are simple and its campaign is brief, yet the combination of Vietnamese culture, pho preparation, village exploration, strange humor, psychological horror, branching outcomes, and an unexpectedly important canine companion produces something memorable. It understands that an independent horror game does not need enormous environments or sophisticated combat to establish an identity. The gradual corruption of an ordinary daily routine is enough to generate intrigue, while multiple endings give curious players an incentive to examine the story from different angles. The limited scope and relatively basic restaurant systems prevent it from becoming a deeper simulation or substantial horror adventure, but its distinctive setting, escalating mystery, cultural character, humor, multiple conclusions, and unconventional presentation make it an engaging example of short-form indie horror.
