I learned that suffering fools is never worthwhile. Really perfect that's a key to success, now go spread the word about Clap Trap Aeronautics Academy...
After 50 hours with Borderlands 4, I walked away with one overwhelming thought: this game has the best gunplay in the franchise trapped inside one of the most forgettable Borderlands I’ve ever played. Let’s get the positives out of the way first because there are quite a few. The shooting is phenomenal. Every weapon feels satisfying, combat is incredibly addictive, the new movement mechanics like the grappling hook and gliding make traversing combat arenas much more dynamic, the skill trees are massive and fun to experiment with, and the cross-play/cross-progression implementation is excellent. Being able to seamlessly continue your character on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or the upcoming Switch 2 version is exactly how modern games should handle it. Unfortunately, almost everything surrounding that fantastic gameplay ranges from mediocre to frustrating. Story & Characters The story is easily one of the weakest in the series. Maybe Handsome Jack set the bar impossibly high back in Borderlands 2, but the main villain here is painfully forgettable. The humor was also lost somewhere along the road. There are attempts at jokes, but they usually feel like the game is desperately waving its arms yelling, “LOOK, I’M BEING FUNNY!” while simultaneously overexplaining the punchline. Instead of laughing, I was punching myself in the face. I even had to dismiss playing several Vault Hunter classes just cause they had a terrible voice actor meaning the only proper way of playing BL4 would be by turning the dialogue volume to 0 and turning the subtitles off. The characters don’t fare much better. The only ones I actually remembered by the end were the returning characters from Borderlands 2. Everyone new blends together into a cast of NPCs whose names I struggled to recall minutes after meeting them. Take Arjay, for example. He’s introduced during the tutorial, dies roughly twenty minutes later, and then shows up again as a post-game boss. My reaction wasn’t excitement it was, “Wait… who is this guy again?” I genuinely had to look him up on the wiki to remember he was the tutorial character. That’s probably the best way I can summarize how little impact the story had on me. Side Quests The side quests In Borderlands 2, you’d accept a quest, immediately get a marker, and maybe listen to some optional radio dialogue while actually playing the game. Borderlands 4 constantly interrupts the gameplay by making you stand around while NPCs ramble for two to five minutes before you’re even allowed to start the mission. During that time, literally nothing happens. You can take your hands off the keyboard, go AFK, take a piss, finish Borderlands 2, come back, and only then will the quest marker finally appear. None of it is skippable and It completely kills the pacing. Gameplay Ironically, the gameplay itself is carried me through all 50 hours. The weapon feel is easily the best the series has ever had. Every firefight is satisfying, movement feels fantastic, and I constantly wanted “just one more mission” because actually shooting things never stopped being fun. If only it consisted of 50 hours of shooting things it would’ve been the best game in the franchise. The skill trees are fantastic and offer a ton of customization. Building my Vex around Trouble was genuinely fun, and by the end of the game my companion became so ridiculously powerful that it could clear encounters almost by itself. I was impressed that the build actually worked. On the other, I realized I barely had to participate anymore. It’s fun to create builds, but it also feels like almost every path is viable enough that your decisions rarely carry much weight. Loot is similarly inconsistent. Legendaries and Mythics are appropriately rare, but they rarely feel exciting because there’s a good chance you’ll immediately find some random weapon lying on the ground with significantly better stats that will carry you for the next five levels. Bosses Most of them are just oversized bullet sponges surrounded by a bunch of smaller enemies so you can easily trigger Second Wind if things go wrong. The genuinely enjoyable bosses are hidden away in the post-game, but telling someone “the bosses get good after the 50-hour campaign” is about as convincing as saying One Piece gets good around episode 6969. Open World The open world is a massive downgrade compared to Borderlands 3. Instead of multiple distinct planets packed with personality, Borderlands 4 gives you one giant map that feels stretched far beyond what it needed to be. Traveling between objectives often means driving through long stretches where absolutely nothing happens. No bandit convoys chasing you. No dynamic encounters. Just empty roads leading to the next objective. Even worse, the world is filled with invisible walls that constantly remind you it isn’t nearly as open as it pretends to be. The different regions also blur together visually with far less biome variety and environmental detail than Borderlands 3. To me, it feels like a downgrade despite being a much newer game. Performance & Optimization Performance is abysmal. The initial shader compilation is long but understandable. The problem is that the game insists on recompiling shaders after seemingly every hardware change or even a GPU driver update, meaning I regularly had to sit through another 15-20 minute wait just to continue my playthrough because NVIDIA sneezed and decided to release yet another driver. That’s frustrating enough on its own, but it’s even harder to justify when the game is such a resource hog while offering surprisingly modest visual improvements. In many areas, it barely looks better than Borderlands 3, a game that was ported to the original Nintendo Switch. Co-op Co-op is another example of Borderlands 4 doing the technical side right while missing the gameplay side. Cross-play and cross-progression are fantastic, inviting your friends if they’re playing on PS or XBOX has never been easier, but the game rarely gives you a reason to actually play together. Enemy scaling mostly means more Badass enemies with bigger health pools, so missions don’t become more interesting they just take longer. Unlike Borderlands 2, where different Vault Hunters often complemented each other with meaningful class synergies, Borderlands 4 feels like everyone is simply playing their own overpowered character next to each other. Final Thoughts I don’t regret playing Borderlands 4. If anything, I’m disappointed because there’s clearly an amazing game buried underneath all of these problems. The combat, movement, weapon feel, and overall gameplay loop are the best the franchise has ever been. But the forgettable story, weak characters, lifeless open world, pacing issues, disappointing loot, repetitive bosses, and baffling optimization constantly get in the way of what should have been one of the best entries in the series. When the credits rolled, my first thought wasn’t “I can’t wait to replay this.” It was, “Well… that was kinda fun. Time to free up 150 GB on my SSD and install a better game.”
a Borderlands 4/10.
P.S. Do not ever, and I mean ever, try playing this game on a Steam Deck. The “Verified” badge is a straight-up lie and should be removed. The game averages under 20 FPS, it’s a horrible experience.
I'm a longtime Borderlands fan, but I refuse to buy Borderlands 4, even at 50% off, purely on principle. My issue isn't the game itself, it's Randy Pitchford's attitude toward the community that has supported Gearbox for years. The way he responded to fan criticism came across as dismissive, condescending, and, at times, outright insulting. That's not the kind of leadership I want to financially support. Whether or not people agreed with every criticism of BL4 at launch, many of the concerns players raised were genuine. Instead of engaging with those concerns respectfully, the response from Randy felt like it boiled down to, "If you can't afford it, that's your problem." That left a very bad impression on me. The whole situation reminded me of Blizzard's infamous "Do you guys not have phones?" moment, an instance where a company appeared disconnected from and dismissive of its own audience. For me, it wasn't just a PR misstep, it fundamentally changed how I view the company. Until Gearbox demonstrates that it values and respects its community, I won't be giving them another cent. That's simply where I draw the line.
Lots of unnecessary hate ... people just want to ride the hate train ... Yes, this game is not well optimized at launch, but now! It's fine. I am playing in a very high preset and getting around 80 to 90 fps. Didn't face any lag or stutter. I spend over 50 hr in this game and I can definitely say BL 4 has the best combat and exploration in the whole series; grappling hooks, double jumps, and wall-climbing are some of the best addition to it. The new vehicle revamped the entire driving experience. Instead of the segmented map in the old Borderland games, the new BL4 provides a more refreshing full open world experience. Story is fine, every side quests are unique and funny, so overall good enjoyable experience. New vault hunter C4SH is amazing and really fun to play. My only complaint is DLC stories are not as good as BL3. I hope they will bring good dlc stories in the future. And I am eagerly waiting for the new character Loveless. I will definitely play the whole game again with Loveless.
i love this game but my boyfriend wont play it with me because of denuvo and im really sad... plz get rid of it soon
This game is still broken. Still crashes constantly. Nothing has been fixed. And frankly it's the worst Borderlands game in terms of gameplay. Don't make my mistake. I thought it would be ready by now. It's not.
Borderlands 4 continues to immense levels of disappointment I am experiencing with the series as time goes on. As a fan of borderlands and a huge fan of borderlands 2, i was very disappointed with Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tinas wonderland. Borderlands 4, while featuring great borderlands style gameplay, is destroyed by everything else around it. Lets talk pros and cons: Pros: Graphics / Art Style - Borderlands continues its great art style that unfortunately can be muddied by not so great looking characters. Some characters and vault hunters look badass, but others not so much. Its a hit or miss, but ultimately, with the new game engine and the environments especially, it is a nice looking game for the franchise and the way the game presents itself. Gameplay - This is where the game shines obviously. You want to turn your brain off, shoot stuff, collect loot and repeat? This is your game. Dont pay attention to anything else, because it just might annoy you. The gameplay is solid here, great gun variation, great weapon builds, great skill trees with fun skills and everything is impactful. Lots of exploration collectibles, big maps to explore and vehicles as well. But trust me, the bad is coming. Gear - Its borderlands, you will never be without gear to loot. Its one of the best parts about it. I will always mention this for every BL game review. Fantastic selection, tons of weapons, shields, medic items etc. Its all there. Cons: Story - This game continues its terrible writing from BL 3 and tiny tinas. Its god awful. I literally started to tune out the story and just focus on the gameplay. I would explore the map and do all the collectible finds, side quests etc. The story has become a major weak point for BL which is a shame, but BL 1 and 2 were fantastic. The characters are mostly uninteresting and the terrible attempts at comedy are beyond cringe. Worse than the standard BL cringe which used to be funny. Now its just...Idk. Bugs / Glitches - Wholly unoptimized batman, this game is terribly optimized. I have a insane rig and the amount of disconnects and issues experienced in co-op were ridiculous. Theres no reason for the game to run like this. Then if you have a co-op partner disconnect, it leads to the FPS dropping to 5 fps, forcing a restart. The game crashes occasionally as well. Overall you can clearly see this game is optimized like ass and I can only imagine how it may run for someone who may not have a super rig. Sometimes the NPC's freak out and start glitch spinning out of nowhere as well. Overall, while only mentioning two cons, those two cons are massive. Theres no way i can explain it all in just two paragraphs just how bad the writing in this game is, how bad the story is, how uninteresting the characters are, how bad the glitches, bugs and other issues are. Overall its really daunting. This game is fun, when you JUST focus on the gun play and gear grind, once you start listening and paying attention to the cringe around you, it ends up being a lot worse. Get the game on super sale, borderlands doesnt take long to give itself away. The less you spend on this, the happier you will be. Thanks for reading.
Honestly the DLC should be given out for free as an apology for what they did to this game.
The gameplay is good. The story and characters are awful and forgettable, although they're less annoying than BL3. Not a bad game, just disappointing. Makes me want to play BL2 again.
Now that all the content is out, my opinion of the game has gone down hill in terms of their priorities and overall replayability. Base game has seen barely any changes apart from the raids/raid bosses in which one is pretty meh and the others are quite good. The Takedown is the best content they've added to the game (currently) but it seems to be the only one they will add which sucks. The Slaughter shafts from previous games have been reduced to only one and it's filled with the same order enemies which seems to be infested everywhere. The balance updates have been poor in terms of waiting for small % changes to characters who desperately need more, looking at you Rafa. Infamy also being a massive linger when it comes to going through the story and starting your character at level 30 makes it a chore to go through most of the content, in an open world game where you're meant to explore and go where YOU want to go. While the game forces you to do other things to catch up and even then it will still end up beating you. Side missions became worthless in this game whereas before you'd want to go to specific side missions for a certain item or because there was something to unlock at the end of it whether it's a farming source or a unique weapon (which they've decided to drop in this game for no apparent reason). Instead, the side missions are used for said infamy system to gain XP or for very little of them, opening up a boss in which may not have an item you want. They added pearls in a later update and a 2nd round of them. Most of the time you'll find a few underwhelming while others outshine. Right now, they can currently drop at any level which stinks because they should be an end-game rarity, or should only be acquired post-story/UVHM. The pearl effect also is not at all something that makes them good as you can 90% of the time just completely ignore. In terms of the paid content, the newest DLC with FL4K seems to actually be a good story pack with things to explore, included with the new Vault hunter Loveless who is fun so far, but the problem that lies with the update is the bounty pack. It's tedious and is just an extension to a base game map with nothing to really add and more plot holes for the game in terms of the story. Talking about the bounty packs, for how much they are worth they need to be at least halved in price as they add nothing of value other than being a glorified weapons pack which you won't return to unless you are looking for something specific. The only bounty pack I would consider worth it is Bounty pack 3. The first Story pack is possibly the worst story they've could've chosen for the first and it being about an irrelevant character who's never been mentioned ever (Ellies father) and it being just a random dude with no link makes the story pointless. Not only that the rifts returning in this DLC doesn't make it anything special and it also being the ONLY real activity to do in the DLC doesn't make it all that worth it. Plus the map's just another snowy area which I'm personally not a fan of, the villain is also not that memorable and the end fight being incredibly underwhelming. Gearbox right now have a horrible time with listening to the community in what the players REALLY want while instead they chuck random crap at the wall and hope that sticks. If they chose to add more to side missions in terms of better rewards and adding more raid bosses, activities to test builds with denser mobbing, it would make the base game at the very least worth it, But in it's current state it isn't something that I would desire replaying again. Sadly, the cons are outweighing the pros and I hope they do add more content, balance updates and a re-vamp to the flow of story progression and mission rewards. As of now and how I've seen them operating whether it's social media or marketing. I don't see any of this happening anytime soon and this content drop being their last. If they make a 5th instalment I pray they do better and give in to community feedback. One last thing to end this review off, they still have not acknowledged the survey they released to us early this year and it's feedback has not been taken into account at all. Which goes to show they most likely won't ever change and I don't think I'll trust this company or franchise again. I may not have mentioned the other problems I have with the game at its current state, but at the same time the list is quite long and I doubt anything will be changed in near future.
I hate when people with a 5090 say "I have a pretty powerful rig" no. I have THE BEST gaming gpu currently on the market so why do I have to struggle to reach 60 fps without DLSS? Borderlands used to run on from the lowest graphics card to the highest experimental tech in BL2 with the PHYSX stuff in that game. I'm sick of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ optimization. I love this game and just want to play it the way it is meant to be played.
