Started the game. Compiling shaders. Alright, fair. I let it finish. It says that it needs to reboot to apply patch. Sure, I guess. Started the game again and compiling shaders again. Fine, I let it finish. Then I went into the main menu and then went to set video settings. I couldn't back out because it started compiling shaders AGAIN! Clicked on continue game and guess what? COMPILING SHADERS once again!!! Now I'm out 20 minutes just compiling shaders 4 times.
didnt enjoy it, way too expensive, game has no soul
If you're not on reddit 24/7 you will enjoy the game, classic borderlands 2 humor with b3 gameplay and wonderlands builds. The open world can be hit or miss tho. People just have a hate boner for anything that isn't borderlands 2 (the only thing that stands the test of time is handsome jack, everything else falls short compared to the new games)
The game is poorly optimized and this, i think, is not something new. It's unplayable without framegen and even then, you can still end up with a rather poor experience due to the nature of the tech itself. Story wise, BL4 is, probably, the worst out of all of them. Moving from a linear storytelling to an open world one was a very bad decision. It gave me Destiny 2 PTSD with their "Go and grab this then come back". The gunplay itself is decent. Not great, not terrible but far from what other games have implemented (like the previously mentioned Destiny 2 and more recently, Witchfire). So if you're after some good gunplay, go check those two out. The graphics themselves are, again, decent. This time, it seems, they really chose to stick with the Red color way too much. On an oled panel, this might begin to be bothersome. Another issue that i have been having are the constant crashes. Regardless of the settings i have chose to play at, the game will crash. It's just a matter of time. I tried undervolting/underclocking/power limiting both my CPU and GPU and still wasn't able to avoid the crashes. Worst part of it all is that with the most recent one, i have also lost my savegame file. Gone are close to 30 hours invested into this so called game. As you can tell, my specs are not the issue so Pitchfork's "this game is for the elite" doesn't actually hold true, even for those who have a rather beefier rig. Uninstalled and will, probably, never touch this game again. It's a waste of time.
The game was fantastic at start, but after coming back from taking a break from this game for quite a few months, I can say this game has turned for the worse. WTF devs?. Horrible and poor PC optimization, UI problems, and an overcorrection of the game's story and open-world tone. My characters got nerfed so bad, not even worth playing any more. Running out of ammo faster now. I spent more time Compiling shaders coming into game and fast traveling than anything now. With my new PC i got in December, this should be a better game to come back to. I also, came back to DLC you have to buy to play the new Vault Hunter.
5/10
I bought the game. I then realised the other half of the game is locked behind DLC. Borderlands 4 is the epitome of publisher greed.
If you played any of the previous versions you won't be surprised. If you're new to the franchise go start with one.
After playing for 178 hours I think I can write some thoughts about the game. Generally it's very fun to play and gameplay-wise I like it. Movement is great, guns are good and it's nice to see some QoL features added like Big Encore Machines and saving collectibles from other save files. But there are a few moments that I think were poorly implemented I have a laptop below minimum requirements and it runs the game on the very minimum FHD settings, which is surprisingly nice. I've played it on a high end PC and it doesn't look that good even on badass settings at 4K resolution. I would say it's like a Borderlands 3 with better lighting. All the UE5 nanites and stuff isn't required for this game. People like the Borderlands games for gameplay and/or story. And yeah... story. We all remember that abomination of BL3 main story line and I would say they did better in this one, but still it's not good. Most of the story is lackluster. It's like: to kill the big guy you need to kill 3 other, then rekill one of them and here you are at the top of the tower. The ending is a bit weird because you just get some useless thing and then one character says "I think we got what we came for". The End. At least they didn't make the villain that obnoxious, but he appears for a few dialogues and then he's like: "Oh, you're here... let's fight". He can control people with bolts, but it seems like he's not in the mood for it) Also the world. I don't like the idea of the open world. It feels empty and useless. All locations look almost the same. The fauna consists of literally 4 animals: kratches (like rakks), manglers (like skaggs, but they are cats), creeps (like ratches or varkids) and wildhorns, which are the only one not copy-pasted from previous games. Mobs also include rippers (like bandits) and the order (like hyperion in bl2 with a few new enemies). You will see order and ripper mobs throughout the whole game, including all bounty packs. Most of the bosses are actually chunkier versions of normal mobs and are very boring. Vehicles are generic, but not bad. They just look different, but feel absolutely the same. I think implementing vehicles from BL3 with summoning them from any place would be a better idea. The last thing I want to complain about is legendaries and pearls. I love that we finally get pearls after all these years, but the first pearl I got was a world drop at level 11... And it's not my luck it's just how it is in this game. I've got like 50 world drop pearls in one playthrough. Legendaries are also common here. Not like in BL3, but still common. I would like to decrease the world drop chance of legendaries and pearls to make it feel more special. Also dedicated drop chances are broken. As far as I know the chance of dropping a dedicated legendary is 23% on UVH 7 and the chance for a dedicated pearl is 0.95%. Maybe I'm bad at math, but getting a pearl every 5-8 kills is not 0.95% (it's from Origo). Also some dedicated legendaries drop more often than others. I farmed Origo a lot and I noticed that Watts 4 Dinner drops are less common than Bottled Lightning or Kaoson. Class mod drops are also weird, because the chance of dropping a class mod not for your character on UVH 7 is 1,435% * 4 = 5,74% and for your character is 17,25%, but you get almost the same amount of both!!! One time I got three legendaries from a boss and all of them were world drops! That's it! The problems that I described are not huge problems. I still think this is a great game and I want people to remember it as such. It is possible for Borderlands 4 to be even a greater game in the future, but looking at the current set of DLC's it is hard to see that future
