It's not one of the most complicated games ever made, but if you're looking for a side scrolling action brawler, Entropy Effect might be one of the best of all time. Crazy responsive controls and a varied cast in the double digits of characters, none of whom closely resemble one another, all of whom are effective. Highly tunable difficulty, consistent sense of progress... buy it!
