It might be short, but this is easily one of my favorite VR games ever. Still can't believe it was released for free.
7/10
Blast the Past is a very simple VR game with a really specific idea. I am put in control of a wrecking crane and my job is to knock down the last old building standing in a city full of modern skyscrapers. That already sounds like a fun excuse to smash things, but the game adds a small twist because I am also encouraged to look for historically important objects before I completely destroy the building. I like that the game does not try to turn this into some huge complicated experience. It basically gives me a crane, a building and a reason to start wrecking things. The crane itself is probably the best part for me. I have to operate the different controls, move the wrecking ball into position and actually judge how I want to hit the building. I can push buttons, turn wheels and use the machinery instead of just pressing one button to trigger a demolition animation. That makes the destruction feel much more satisfying because I am the one controlling how the building comes apart. The dynamic destruction also gives each hit a bit of weight, especially when a large section finally breaks away after I have weakened it. I also like the little historical collecting side of it. While I am supposed to destroy the building, I can search through it for objects that are worth preserving. That gives me a reason not to simply swing the ball wildly at everything from the start. I have to pay attention to what I am smashing and occasionally take a more careful approach. There are also hidden things to discover, so I feel like I am doing a little more than just playing with a wrecking ball. It is a small idea, but it helps give the game some purpose. The music is another part that stood out to me. I can find music tapes around the area and change what I am listening to while I work, which is a nice little touch in a game that could otherwise feel very quiet. I also like all the things I can interact with around the crane. There are buttons, controls and bits of machinery everywhere, and messing around with them adds to the feeling that I am actually operating a piece of heavy equipment rather than controlling a normal game character. The biggest weakness is that the idea runs out of steam fairly quickly for me. Once I have figured out how the crane works and seen most of the destruction, there is not a huge amount of new gameplay waiting for me. There are secrets and collectibles to find, but the core activity is still knocking down the building. I also think the game is limited by being VR only, because I cannot really get much out of it unless I have compatible VR equipment. That makes it much more of a specific experience than something I can casually pick up whenever I want. The presentation is decent and I actually think the old building surrounded by huge modern skyscrapers is a good visual setup. It gives the demolition a clear purpose and makes the contrast between old and new easy to understand. At the same time, I can definitely see that this was made as a small student project rather than a large commercial game. Some parts feel basic and the overall experience is quite compact. I do not think that is necessarily a bad thing, especially because the core destruction works, but it does keep the game from feeling like something I would return to for a very long time. Overall, Blast the Past is a fun little VR experience that gets most of its value from the simple pleasure of operating a wrecking crane. I like physically controlling the machinery, watching the building break apart, searching for historical objects and messing around with the interactive parts of the scene. The short and focused design means I can run out of things to do fairly quickly, and the VR requirement makes it harder to recommend to everyone. Still, I think the destruction is satisfying enough and the idea is unusual enough that I enjoyed my time with it. It is not a deep game, but I do not think it needs to be. Rating: 7/10
