Reviews
Well, what can I say — I finished this game. This game is not a masterpiece. It doesn’t shine with a huge number of mechanics or incredible graphics. It definitely doesn’t have the most beautiful space visuals, the best music, or the most original story, BUT despite all that, it’s still a good game. In my opinion, the game was made with love and genuine effort. A lot of mistakes were made, there are plenty of bugs, some of them even serious, and I definitely won’t recommend this game to my friends. However, I personally had a lot of fun while playing through it. Probably because I love those space TV series from the ’90s and early 2000s, like Star Trek, Babylon 5, Andromeda, and others like them. This game has the spirit of those shows, at least in my opinion.
Yes... I would recommend this game, but with a Massive Warning Disclaimer. Normally I do Game Reviews because a Game is Super GREAT... or Super Bad. This game is somewhere in the middle of Non-Super. But it's a good game... enjoyable... some differences from other games, and can/should provide many hours of Fun. However... it will also provide Massive Frustration. The biggest of which are the Supposed Choices the player gets to make... when in fact, they are decisions to do what the devs want you to do... or be Punished for not making the decision the Dev felt you should have made. I like games where you can go Left or Right, and depending on your choice you get 1 Good Reward or another based on your choice. But here, anyone who goes Right gets the Good Reward... Go Left and get (not just a Bad Reward, but....) Punished. (i.e., I allowed to crew members to maintain their relationship... I Lost a Leadership point (these points do not come easily); and I didn't even get a bump in Crew Moral or something; just Punished!!! I never post spoilers, but this is 'Spoiler' I'm posting, because you are going to want it. When you meet with the council you need to push attacking now and not wasting time. Why? Because if you don't when you attack the Phoenix it will be invincible and the game comes to an end; or you just keep playing (leave the battle), and never complete the main story... unless you reload a save prior to the council meeting and make the choice the Devs wanted you to make. And we are not talking Alternate Endings... we are talking, the ship is indestructible and as such, destroys You, your fleet and the fleet that accompanies you; No Survivors... which means; Game Over (Literally). The other thing is a Dice System to make determinations; which is a Great Idea... if they made the system fair. You have skills you can increase, such as Leadership, Charisma, etc.. These skills come in handy with certain text based story portions of the game. So.,. your CHA is 7, and to succeed you must throw an 8 on the die. So, you throw a 5. You think you won, right? Your 7 Plus the Die's 5 equals 12. But the way the Devs designed it, they don't care how many points you placed in your Charisma... in order to win the dice have to be 8 or More... Your skill doesn't actually count (kind of like the Electoral College). So what is the point of even spending points? On the brightside... in the Options menu you can turn that non-sense off; I'm pretty sure it's still happening in the background, but, at least, you can feel as though you lost because your CHA wasn't high enough, since they also don't tell you what you need to beat a check. Bottomline is: This really is a Good Game; but the Devs made some really poor choices. While I'm a firm believer that One man's Trash is another man's Treasure... there is a reason why people aren't playing this game in droves... because without these few bad decisions... this would really be a Great Game. Catch it on-sale, you'll be less disappointed. Add-On: So, I just got the mini-quest text thing again with 2 Crew Members in a relationship. This time I reprimanded them for the violation and I Received a point under leadership. So once again... you do not get to develop your own character... or at least not a good one, because if you keep doing what the Devs don't like, you'll end up with a Weak Captain with no skills. If you want to Take/Give a Leadership Point for my decision, then, at the very least Take/Give a Reward, like a Point to/from Charisma, because your better liked by your crew. Don't just Punish because it's not what You would have done. (Soooo Frickin' Annoying). Note: I like to Roleplay, and this takes all Roleplay out of the game. Another Add-On: I'm now using this review to Vent. I'm starting to see why people have stopped playing this game. Just got another one of these Mini-Game Text Things. You choose whether to keep something to yourself (hold the burden alone) or share it with your crew. If you are Steadfast, and hold the burden you Lose a Trait (Fullness: Captain (You) gain more experience). But if put the burden onto your crew you lose nothing... and you gain nothing. So a Strong Captain that protects their crew from burdens they don't need to carry is punished; but a Weak Captain who needs their crew to Hold their Hand, well, no punishments, but no rewards either. I'm not sure how much more of this game I can take.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Good base, maybe, but the design is poor. It maybe makes sense to have an hour-long tutorial that ends in defeat - but then the main game being the same? Story design is "hurry up, hurry up, do this thing, do this thing" and then the quest you're sent on is extraordinarily difficult, and you can't progress without getting past it. Apparently if you have the "right build" and the "right strat" it might not be hard, but their Normal difficulty play isn't. I don't know what the devs were thinking to but this kind of roadblock so early in the game. In general, storytelling is hard - even in the small amount of main story I've been able to play through you're repeatedly making uncued significant choices.
The writing is good, but not good enough to save everything else. After 5 hours the gameplay gets stale, the game railroads you at every turn ("Our shields are failing!" while your shields are at 99%), and it's not impressive in any area apart from the story.
It starts good but unfortunately falls short and boring. The good: - Ship designs - Combat (not another dog fighting space sim) The bad: Pretty much everything else. - Walls of text, too long and boring, cut the pacing of the gameplay especially during large battles - Predictable story and dialogs - Bad voice acting for certain characters, especially the protagonist - No saving during scripted events which can be lenghty - Inconsistencies and lack of depth (i.e. weapons have firing range but there's no indication of target distances) - No replay value Conclusion: a missed opportunity. The game should have been more focused on side missions, random events, exploration and free roaming rather than going through a scripted story campaign.
Cautious recommendation. Gameplay-wise Between the stars has a number of flaws. The combat is relatively simplistic despite having 6Ds of freedom. Not all systems are well fleshed out - crafting generally fails to be suitable source of gear compared to drops/stores. Ship progression is a tad wonky. Managing AI companions is a bit cumbersome. That said, story is surprisingly decent, the mechanics related to random events and crew interactions are interesting. And there are some decent consequences to certain decisions that do alter the story development meaningfully. Those elements were definitely the highlights that made game enjoyable for me.
Fun game potential ruined by imbalances, a crappy UI, and multiple bugs..
A heavily flawed game, that I still enjoy. I get why it has mixed reviews, it may deserve a negative overall. But this game has soul. I recommend it at 15 bucks or less. Short pro/con lists Pros: - Fun if easy combat - Quality writing - Good ship designs - Generally good art Cons: - Poor fight design, specifically in regard to story missions - Poor weapon balance - Technical issues regarding story choices and dialogue - Poor but workable camera - No sense of scale The gameplay is simple, pretty easy if/when you realize what works and run with it. Even if you just go for what looks cool, don't expect a hard game. Weapons are poorly balanced, while they can all work, and even be good, the disparity between the main cannon lines and every other weapon type is staggering. While workable I gave up on running a missile boat because it didn't feel as good. There are many times in the story where they put you in an unwinnable, or unwinnable until the dialogue play out fight where an invincible enemy monologues at you while eating nuclear missiles for breakfast. Don't turn a cutscene into an unwinnable slog of bad gameplay and exposition, The story was well written, at times it fell into tropes and has one or two intentionally annoying characters whose humor did not make up for their failings, but on the whole, the writing is quite good. The game can forget prior actions and story choices. A man whose life I saved,
who stood by my side as we betrayed his nation, and who killed his father in front of me
, randomly shows up as an enemy later, as if I had taken one of the other story routes, with no dialogue referencing it, as though we had always been enemies. Crew members would be referred to by He or She inconsistently. I suspect there was a function to call character data and then use he or she respectively, but then some dialogue went through with just a written he or she. I got a girl pregnant. I was playing a female character. The last big flaw is in the sense of scale. Every ship in this game is a capital ship, cruiser or battleship. When all of the ships are operating on roughly the same playing field of size, maneuverability, and firepower they stop feeling like giant monstrous vessels. You could replace every instance of the word cruiser or battleship with corvette, and I don't thing anybody would notice The game needed a wider variety of ship types in the action to set the scale. If I'm flying a big ship, I want to feel like I'm flying a big ship.
I was super excited to try this game out. However within five minutes I hit a show-stopper bug. In the prologue, the contract never shows up in the Commercial district. It doesn't show up in any of the tabs. I read it is supposed to show in the Station tab but it's not there. It's very disappointing to run into such a huge problem right in the introduction.
