About

Attention Operator,
You have been selected to oversee a critical mission. Our team of elite soldiers is set to descend into a newly discovered abyss, believed to lead to uncharted territories beneath the earth. Your role is to monitor the soldiers' progress, ensuring their safety and collecting data.

As they venture deeper, remain vigilant and provide guidance based on their transmissions. You will have access to a status monitor, a radar, a radio to scan various frequencies, and other equipment to assist in your mission.
Be aware that communication may become sporadic as they descend. Strange anomalies have already been detected, and the nature of the abyss remains unknown.

Prepare for the unexpected and maintain operational readiness at all times. Prepare to face the unimaginable.
End of message.

I really wanted to like this following the demo, but most of what I enjoyed fell away as I realized just how tightly I was being railroaded. It's a walking simulator, and the majority of the time is looking around for the object that arbitrarily progresses the plot. The atmosphere is on point, and there was an initial dread that was very promising in the demo phase. But it just got boring once I realized I was just walking around guessing which objects to click on. I'd remove "immersive sim" from the tags. I might also just be getting a little sick of these kinds of indie horror games where you just walk around slowly clicking stuff and moving towards the next jumpscare. So don't take this too personally, devs.
This is how you do lovecraftian/eldrich horror! The way you are the 'operator' that hears descriptions of the things the team is seeing is so chillingly well done. Don't worry though, plenty of absolutely terrifying things happen to you in the control and adjacent rooms. I can't count how many times I had to work up the courage to turn around or walk through a doorway. It was sooooo well done with only one-ish jump scare. Everything else was audio and lighting and just wonderful. HOrrifying 10/10

I thought I had found a hidden gem, but no. I played it on release day without knowing, which explains why so few reviews! Can't call it a hidden gem if it just came out. "Horror" and "walking simulator" are probably the most useful points of reference, though there is less walking than usual. And neither fully describes the experience, so trying to do so would do the game's uniqueness a disservice. Short, incredibly well polished, unsettling and unnerving from start to finish. I highly recommend it.
I'm not recommending this game because I did not enjoy my experience but I will say that it at least has effort put behind it that makes it not your run of the mill asset flip jump scare horror slop. You MAY enjoy this game and it's only like 8 dollars or so. I have 2 main problems with the game: 1: It's walking sim horror. What that means is that you seemingly can't die until the end of the game. What that entails is that you don't care about all the spooky things you get shown because they're not really a threat. There's a section where you're forced to get grabbed by a spooky lady that very, very slowly walks to you with no escape that made me check out of the game. I got put onto the bad end path (which I will talk about in point 2) and basically just tried my best to get my team and myself killed and I couldn't die. I understand that the dev was trying to build atmosphere over cheap jumpscares (though the game has a few of those (and they're fine)), but looming threats mean nothing without actual danger. I can just run at the scares because they're not a threat, why should I be scared? 2: It's very easy to be put on the bad end route. How it happened for me is there's a section where you need to check the medical monitoring machine and a message will pop up telling you to not move. I was in the middle of moving when I pressed the button that brings this message up which meant I immediately failed the event, which locked me out of the med machine and then locked me into the bad ending because without this machine one of your crew will die and you need all 4 alive later. You might look at my playtime and go "1 minute below the refund window, why not just do another run?" It's boring. You stand around waiting for stuff to happen. Knowing there's no danger you're just playing waiting room simulator 2026 until stuff happens. All this being said, I do think the dev put a lot of effort into the game and although I think on a fundamental level it's flawed, it might just be flawed in a way that bothers me but may not bother you. It's cheap, atmospheric and it may well be up your alley even if it's not up mine. Heed point 2 and you might have a good time.
There's plenty to like about Below, Rusted Gods, and honestly if you're looking for a 2 hour one-off grab-bag of spookiness for $8, then this does fit the bill; However, personally I cannot recommend this game because of my own missed expectations. The game seems to have a fractured identity. It starts with a strong impression: you arrive at a desk with a terminal that prints out the spoken words of a team of 4 who are already descending down into a very deep tunnel, the entrance of which is right before you. You are supervising them through direct communication via the terminal, monitoring their vitals using a medical device, watching for movement on their radar, peeking at a video feed they set up, and using a radio to listen to sounds from their surroundings. The gameplay loop being established here is very clear: you must field data requests from the team and potentially warn them of anything you see on the various readouts. However, all this set up is immediately thrown out the window. You use the medical machine twice when asked, you optionally look at the radar once when hinted to do so, you use the radio once when asked, and you never have to look at the video feed. So if the game is not a tense time-gated narrative about you being the lifeline supporting an expedition into the unknown, what is it? It becomes a haunted house. With a handful of collectibles and a handful of rooms with a handful of scares and a B-plot. It's disappointing because I really wanted to get invested in this story about 4 men seemingly forced by some government to sacrifice themselves to learn about some deep entity, but you barely do anything to assist them and most of the time all you will say to them is "Understood," "Acknowledged", and "..." -- you don't even bother to tell them about what's happening around you or what you're learning about in the B-plot. The writing is so thin; I wanted so much more. Unfortunately the haunted house sequences are also disjointed. Maria is joined by so many things:
a statue of a woman
,
a blanket ghost
,
a small alien
,
a goat
,
a tall shadow man
,
a guy that cut his eye out and hand off
,
a large eye
,
a large mouth
,
fleshy tentacle buds
,
a large alien
, and
a sliding alien statue
, but a lot of these things and their scenes just seem to be here to be spooky. The connective tissue between what you're being told about and what you're now seeing is so sparse and stretched so thin that it feels like most of these things are here for a good screenshot, or to be in the sizzle reel, or just to fill a "something spooky should be here" void in a scene. So, the game isn't really about the story of the men going into the unknown, and it's also not really about Maria's tribulations in this place either, which kind of just leaves us with that it's about your story: "doing a set of time-gated sequenced events for an ending" because the endings are really the only pay off you get. And unfortunately the "time-gated" bit there really makes getting the other endings a chore. To wrap this up: [olist] [*]
the large Eye
in the tunnel was really cool. [*]I missed the "Don't Move" on the medical machine in my first playthrough because I didn't bother to stare at the machine and instead backed up to read the blue paper next to it and failed that playthrough because of that which was oh so annoying [*]fast text is not enough, a "skip to next event" should have been added for new games [*]I was so happy to see the red dot moving away from the team on the radar, and that only happens in that one singular sequence. [*]I checked the video feed so many times, but was so disappointed I couldn't even tell the men about the
large alien
in the doorway or the
bleeding statue
, and they don't even take the camera with them??? [*]why is the radio only used to hear a dripping sound and then later only for the B-plot collectibles?? the men talk about hearing whispering and yet that's not on the radio?! [*]early on they establish that you can talk to the men at any time as long as they are "active" -- i'm pretty sure that's only used once to ask about the fog and for the rest of the game they just say meaningless things [*]the trailers show things that seemingly are not in the game, and that irks me a bit [*]the game was made by 2 people but the credits have no acknowledgements about the assets they used at all, which seems like really bad practice [/olist]
It's perfect, what an amazing game. The story is crazy, the atmosphere is unmatched, and you have a bunch of different endings depending on what choices you make. If you like story driven games, don't miss this gem, buy and support it!
