BasketBelle

농구공을 이용해 여동생을 납치한 보라색 촉수괴물들을 혼내주는 이야기 게임 설명을 읽어 보면 알겠지만, "농구 소재를 쓴 플랫포머 게임" 이다. 즉, 스포츠 장르의 게임을 해 보면 나올법한 화려한 덩크슛이나 컨트롤을 잘 하면 나오는 멋지거나 재미있는 장면들을 기대하면 안 되고, 오히려 반은 퍼즐, 반은 플랫포머가 섞여 있는 퍼즐 플랫포머 게임을 한다고 생각하면 편하다. 그래서 그런지 (대부분의 레벨에서) 공을 컨트롤할 필요 없이, 주인공은 농구공을 던지기만 하면 백발백중으로 어느 거리에서나 골대에 넣을 수 있는 초인이다. 사실 게임 내 비주얼이 마음에 안 들었거나 버그가 많아서 불편했던 게임은 아닌데, 개인적으로는 그렇게 추천하고 싶은 게임은 아니었다. 대표적으로 이 게임이 마음에 안 들었던 점은, 게임이 생각보다 불친절하다는 점이었다. 게임을 진행하다 보면, 직관적이지 않은 몇몇 부분이 있어서 게임을 하면서 막힌 경우는 컨트롤이 딸려서가 아니라 단순히 뭘 해야 하는지 몰라서 막힌 경우들이라는 점 때문에, 막힌 구간을 풀어냈을 때는 성취감보다는 짜증만이 몰려왔다. 그렇다고 진행이 술술 되는 구간이 재미있다는 건 아니라, 게임성도 사실 어디서 본 듯한 것들을 짬뽕해 놓은 것에 그쳐서 이 게임만의 재미를 찾지 못했다. 스토리 중심 게임이라고 보기에는 스토리 자체도 높은 점수를 쳐주기에는 그저 그래서, 게임성과 스토리 둘 다 큰 매력을 느끼지 못했다. 결론적으로, 농구를 플랫포머와 결합하려고 하는 시도는 있었으나 재미는 별로 없었던 게임이었다. 가격 대비 플레이타임도 길지 않기 때문에 해보고 싶다면 세일할 때 사는 걸 권장. 여담) 게임을 하다보면 주인공이 하늘을 날 수 있는데, 멍청하게 나처럼 X키를 연타하지 말고 꾹 누르면 저절로 날아가니까 손가락을 혹사시키지 말자.

BasketBelle is an awesome little basketball adventure. I picked it up as part of Indie Royale's Harvest Bundle way back around 2012, and it was easily one of my favourite games of that year. I picked it up again recently to give it another go and grab the achievements, and was reminded just how good it is. It's extremely short, clocking in at about an hour at most. And the controls are really simple - you've got left and right movement, jumping/shooting the ball, sliding, and fakeout shots. That's it. But BasketBelle is a clear example of how quality shines over quantity - it might just be an hour, but it'll be a highly enjoyable and engrossing hour, and to me that is absolutely worth the price of admission. Every chapter changes things up and incorporates Basketball into the game in a different way. You'll go up against humans, weird blob creatures, traverse the insides of a weird blob creature after getting gobbled up, and so much more. As you go through the game you also get these cool little flashes of narrative involving love, hardships, and family; and it's engrossing all the way through. I don't know how to describe the visual style because I've never really seen anything else like it, but it's absolutely beautiful. As is the music - easily one of my favourite parts of the game (and the soundtrack is included, by the way), and the beat is synced up with the basketball dribbles, which is pretty awesome. All in all, if you have an hour or so and want to check out something cool and unique, I definitely recommend Basketbelle, even for the $5. There are so many games out there these days that in my mind quality of hours is exponentially more important than quantity, and Basketbelle is a special experience that I don't think you'll regret checking out.
