[h3]TLDR[/h3] BAJA: Edge of Control HD is a fun off-road racer with occasional minor annoyances. Overall, I did enjoy my time with the game, even if my review may not make it seem so at first glance. 95% of the game (or at least its career mode and achievements--I don't play multiplayer any more than I have to for achievements) were a lot of fun. [h3]The Good[/h3] The sky boxes are very beautiful (except for the horizon--we don't talk about the horizon), even if the game graphics do show the game's age. Racing feels good, with fairly simple controls, decent traction and believable behavior. Pro tip for achievement hunters with aversion to MP trophies: you don't need other players for these. Look up the achievement guide here on Steam for how to do them solo. [h3]The Bad[/h3] Somebody please call pest control, because there are way too many bunnies, cats, and other critters on the in-game roads. While they do not have collision, they do get distracting sometimes. The civilian cars that sometimes intersect with the tracks DO have collision however, which sure makes having them A Choice™. The tracks Lost Dog, Cris Cross (which I came to call the Spaghetti Map on stream) and La Muerte (very aptly named, no notes here) are absolute pains in the *beep*. Likewise, hill climb races were just... why? Who thought this was fun? There were also one or two sponsorship races that had a massive difficulty spike compared to all the rest. Aside from this, my three main gripes with the game are: 1. The mini map for some reason does not show the start/finish line, which seems like a mind-boggling omission. 2. Tutorials are presented to you when you enter a mode for the first time. If you skip them there, you have to dig through multiple menus in the options to find them again. 3. Logical thinking might lead you to believe that upgrading your car fully will give you an edge against the AI, because that is how rewards progression is supposed to work--you work hard, you get XP/credits/whatever, and then you use that to buy skills/upgrades that make your life easier. WRONG. The AI will level with you, so the easier way is actually to upgrade only your clutch and tires, which the AI doesn't use very well. [h3]The Ugly[/h3] Nothing. I don't recall a single bug from my time with the game that would have ticked me off badly enough to remember it past the session where it happened, which is great.
