I feel a little conflicted about this game. At one hand it's a great metroidvania with very interesting world setting/lore, but on the other it lacks something when it comes to the gameplay and combat mechanics. I would recommend it to anyone who is more interested in the world setting/lore rather than an interesting combat experience with hard boss battles, since you won't find it here. I would especially recommend it to anyone who played and liked the previous Axiom Verge (AV1) game, but I will note that for me this game feels like a bit of downgrade. Based on that I would not recommend to play this game directly after finishing the AV1 and to take some break between them, since otherwise it might dissapoint some people. Since this game and the AV1 are connected storywise, I would strongly recommend to not skip the AV1. There are some references and names that appear from it, so some notes and events make more sense if you are familiar with them and otherwise they might be a little confusing to say the least. I originally tried to play this a few months after the release and not long after playing AV1, but I bounced back hard from it. I played it for somewhere around 1-2 hours, but the overall gameplay felt really strange in comparison to the AV1 and so I just put down the game for later and never came back to it until now. Starting with the level/world design, I feel like this is something that is done much better in comparison to the AV1. The world is pretty condensed, but it has a lot of different things to do and come back later to, after gaining access to appropriate skills/items. Each location feels unique and it's easy to tell at the first glance in which section of the world the player is located. The only issue that I have with the overall design is that the levels seem less interesting and mundane in comparison to AV1, since they depict more typical environment similar to earth, so it's easier for the player to image and make some expectations. The music is really great and it's very atmospheric. It's not something that I would listen to everyday, but for me at least it feels like it builds this feeling of mystery and uneasiness, while still keeping in the style that was used in AV1 but not being the same as it. The story and lore elements of the game is the part, which I'm a little bit conflicted about. I didn't like the story that was presented in this game, but I really liked the lore of the game. To be more precise I felt like the story was pretty straight forward and there weren't that many interactions with other characters, which I expected since there are multiple human characters in the game. Most of these interactions come down to a few lines of dialogue and that's it. They don't even react to any other story related events (apart from the ones related to the breach), so they seem a little lifeless. My main issue is that story itself felt a little unresponsive and simplified in comparison to what was presented in AV1. Contrary to that I love the lore elements and the implications that they have on the overall world setting/lore between the games. Some of them directly affect some theories that were made based on the AV1 and create some new ones, so they feel like a great addition overall. The combat in this game feels really basic and not really well thought out in my opinion. There are melee weapons, ranged weapons, hacking and some items that you can use to fight. Apart from these items, so to not spoil anything, they came down to:

Melee weapons - these were the main way for me to deal with enemies and there are several different ones that you find over the course of the game. The issue is that using them feels mostly the same (different ranges, damage and cooldowns). They don't have any combos and you can either spam them to death or do some charge attacks with them.
Ranged weapons are pretty limited, since there is only a basic boomerang and then some other stronger variation of it near the end of the game. Since you aim with movement stick, it was also annoying to aim with and the melee weapons felt superior to them in terms of damage.
Hacking is also pretty basic and it's mainly used as a support rather than a way to damage enemies (things like slowing them down, revealing hidden ones, making then unable to aim etc.). You usually charge it and when enemy comes into range, you can release it and select a command (from a list of specific commands available to the enemy), which should be hacked into enemy. I didn't use it that often, since these commands rarely do damage and cost energy, so it was usually useful out of combat when trying to avoid enemies, while gathering some healing nodes or during exploration. Honestly I was pretty dissapointed that it was so restrictive to use - high hacking costs, only a few commands to use per enemy and the fact that you can't damage most enemies with it.
There is also a drone that is unlocked at some point of the game, but it's rather used as an exploration tool, but it can be sometimes useful as a disposable way to deal with enemies.
Based on that, it feels like the game entices you to attack enemies in melee range, which usually comes down to rushing enemies and spamming them to death with melee attacks and face tanking all the damage most of the time. This is much different to what was done in the AV1, which had a ranged gun as a base weapon and most of the time the player tried to carefully defeat enemies without losing any health. Even then there were multiple firing modes available for it, which could be easily changed during combat and behaved much differently from each other making it more dynamic and interesting. In this game there is a place for weapon variety during fights (multiple slots for different weapons), but since the weapon choices to damage enemies comes down mostly to melee weapons, the choice and variety isn't as great as it could be. The player upgrades using the found canisters also felt very lackluster. There were some useful upgrades like extending hacking level and range, but apart from that it felt very generic and not inspiring at all(melee weapon damage, melee weapon attack speed, ranged weapon damange, ranged weapon attack speed, health ugrade etc,). I feel like it would be much better if most of these would be changed into collectibles around the world or if there would be some more unique skills that would affect the gameplay more and not just adjust some stats. To summarize it all. I still feel like this is a good game that I can recommend with a clear conscience to metroidvania fans or people who played the AV1, but I'm just somehow dissapointed that it didn't feel like a proper upgrade to a base game, which was and still is a great option if you don't have anything against pixelart games.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

At first the map may seem intimidating and chaotic and up to a point it may be, you'll need to keep track of things to come back later. Even though the game does have a system to put a reminder mark, it's for a general map block and not pinpoint or tell you if its a boos, a door or an item that you marked. But stick with it and its rewarding. The gameplay differs a bit from the first one, but its still fun. Banger of a soundtrack1
Not quite as enthusastic a thumbs up as I would give the first game, but this is still a pretty solid game overall. Not a direct sequel to the first, this one takes place in the same universe and there's a few breadcrumbs around for those that played the previous game but nothing that directly continues that storyline. Changing the focus from gunplay to melee was an iffy choice and one that doesn't really pay off to me. Although I don't have much bad to say about the combat other than it's not as varied as what came before. Exploring with your drone is more fun though, especially once you get a couple transversal abilities. On sale I say it's a no-brainer to pick it up if you're into this style of game. At full price it's still not a bad value proposition, but it's a little light overall.
Dank/10
The game is not bad, but it's quite short and the items are, well, dissapointing.
I loved Axiom Verge. The sequel is different from the first game for sure, especially combat wise. More melee focused and probably the weakest part of the game. However, exploration and the abilities you use to explore are fantastic. The pixel art is beautiful. The OST is insanely good. The sound effects deserve a mention too because they are excellent.
Axiom Verge 1 is amazing game. It's very good. It has great controls, interesting map and items. I like it so much. I bought Axiom Verge 2 when it was released and had no time to play it till this week. Oh, well... Pros: - Nice visuals if you like pixel art. I like it a lot. And that's it. Nothing more... Cons: - Enemies with guns and player with axe. (Axiom Verge 1 had great idea like Castlenavia had. Enemies are weak and most of them are melee. Player has different guns or range weapons. It's fun to clear the stage and explore the map. Axiom Verge 2 gives you an axe and gives guns, lasers, bombs to enemy drones. Is it not annoying enough? Let's add invisible enemies or enemies with auto targeting bullets! Enjoy!) - Map is huge now and also it's not clear what should player look for. Several time I had no idea what to do when I got new item and I had to go over all screens to find the missed places. It looks like a way to extend game time for no reason. But I must say thank you for allowing to teleport to save points at the middle of the game. It saved a lot of time. - Jump-enemies (I know, I wrote about enemies before). It's often when player walks on grass or snow something jumps from the ground. It just pisses off. There is no way to see it. Also it works like land mine. Hit has 100% chance. If you want to get relaxing and interesting metriodvania, check Axiom Verge 1. It's one of the best metroid-games ever. If you want something "souls-like" or you like to kill snipers with axe, go for Axiom Verge 2
I was super excited for this game and it's got some enjoyable moments, but it's nothing like the 1st game. The original was very reminiscent of Metroid games. This one has some elements, but there more that is not at all. I wish there was a meh in addition to yes and no. So I guess I have to say yes, but there were parts where I had no clue what to do next or where to go. The respawn digital tornado is an annoying time suck. Overall, I've enjoyed the time that I've put in, but I also was annoyed enough to walk away from it for a few days. I'm one who plays a game to completion before moving on to another game, so that says something to me. I enjoy the older style and side scrolling retro type games, but I'd give this a 6/10. Enjoyable, but can't hold a candle to the original. I'd play that game multiple times. Kinda like mario 1 was great. 2 was meh and 3 was wonderful!. This is a mario 2 game. I hope there's a redemptive 3rd installment.
