Fun little historical short game. The theatricals and orchestra music is a cool touch! the only critic is dialogues ... real people don't talk like that especially in the high stress situations like that 7/10
completed in under an hour was good kinda like wish it was longer but very interactive
Aviators takes a different approach to the familiar World War II setting by concentrating on the experiences of Polish air personnel and turning their history into an accessible adventure. Developed by Chronospace and published by Instytut Pamięci Narodowej, it is less interested in delivering a hardcore aviation simulation than in using interactive gameplay to introduce players to the Polish Air Force and the 1586 Special Destiny Squadron. The historical emphasis immediately gives the game a distinctive identity, especially since this part of the war receives considerably less attention in games than the major campaigns normally associated with the period. The campaign combines several styles of play instead of keeping the player permanently inside an aircraft. Aerial battles against the Luftwaffe naturally form an important part of the experience, but missions also involve exploration, environmental interaction, puzzles, operating equipment aboard a Halifax aircraft, communicating with the Armia Krajowa resistance, and participating in scenarios connected with the Warsaw Uprising. Other sequences involve German fortifications, artillery positions, and even a vehicle escape. The changing activities help the campaign maintain variety and reinforce the idea that this is an adventure built around wartime aviation rather than a conventional flight simulator. Flying and combat are intentionally approachable. Players looking for detailed aerodynamics, elaborate cockpit procedures, or the demanding aircraft management of a dedicated simulator will find the mechanics relatively straightforward. That simplicity works reasonably well within the game's educational goals because the historical situations remain the focus. The drawback is that experienced action and simulation players may find individual gameplay systems somewhat shallow. The puzzles and exploration provide welcome changes of pace, although they similarly prioritize accessibility over complexity. Historical presentation is where Aviators becomes much more memorable. Its scenarios draw upon actual events and people connected with Polish aviation during World War II, giving the adventure a foundation beyond fictional military spectacle. A journal functions as an integrated historical compendium, allowing interested players to learn more about subjects encountered during the campaign. This feature complements the gameplay particularly well because information is connected to locations, characters, equipment, and events that the player has already experienced interactively. The audiovisual direction also supports the educational atmosphere. Aircraft, military equipment, wartime environments, and other period details establish a convincing setting despite the production lacking the enormous visual budget of major military games. Some animations and environmental elements can appear modest, but the historical direction gives the presentation purpose. Particularly notable is The Aviators' Suite, composed by Przemysław Treszczotka and influenced by the musical traditions associated with Karol Szymanowski and Mieczysław Karłowicz. The soundtrack adds a specifically Polish cultural character rather than relying entirely on generic dramatic war music. Another strength is accessibility. The game is free to play and supports numerous interface and subtitle languages, while English and Polish include full audio. There are also 14 Steam achievements. The PC requirements are more demanding than the game's scale might initially suggest, with 16 GB of RAM listed even at minimum specifications alongside a GTX 1070-class graphics card and 25 GB of available storage. It is therefore worth checking hardware capabilities before assuming this is a lightweight educational title. Steam Deck compatibility is officially rated Playable. The game runs successfully on SteamOS, its default controller configuration provides access to the necessary functionality, Steam Deck controller icons are displayed, and the default graphical settings are considered suitable for the handheld. The primary caveat is that some text can be small and difficult to read on the Deck's screen. External Bluetooth or USB controllers may also require manually changing the active controller through the Quick Access Menu. Overall, handheld play is practical, but the small text prevents the experience from receiving the stronger Verified classification. Aviators ultimately works best for players who appreciate history as much as conventional gameplay. Its flight mechanics, shooting, exploration, and puzzles are not individually deep enough to challenge specialized games in those genres, but together they create an unusually varied framework for discovering a lesser-represented part of World War II. The educational journal, real historical inspiration, distinctive soundtrack, and focus on Polish aviators provide the experience with genuine character. As a free historical adventure, it offers enough variety and educational substance to compensate for its relatively simple mechanics and modest production values. Rating: 7/10
This game is hilariously buggy. Half my playtime was just trying to get it to work. Either the resolution crapped out suddenly, or most of the time my mouse disappeared. I was getting some gnarly screen tearing despite the game running at my monitors 144hz, not to mention that I have FreeSync. I enabled VSync and the game suddenly changed to 880x1440, but remained stretched across the width of my screen, causing everything to be ten pixels tall and stretched from one side to the other. I managed to fix this after pixel hunting for the options. There is also no ultrawide support, the 3440x1440 resolution is available, but it leaves black bars on the side, so clearly that's not right... Interacting with stuff is a pain. The cursor was missing 75% of the time, and during that time, every button I pressed made a clicking sound. I think the game thought I was still navigating the pause menu, because the clicking was similar to the clicks made when selecting an option. Finally, I attempted to balance the bomber's fuel, but nothing would work. I could not interact with the fuel toggles at all, but the pump lever worked. I then tried some red buttons that were at the very bottom of the screen, partly cut off (can't look around the panel, view is fixed in place!) and that instead grabbed the bottom of the game window and made the taskbar appear, as though I was resizing a generic window, not a fullscreen video game. I was able to press the button, though, so I guess that means they worked. But then who knows what other buttons might've been totally cut off the edges of the screen? In the five minutes that the game did work, it was pretty cool. The bomber is incredibly detailed and there are notes/journal entries all over the place. It felt like a virtual museum. I would've liked the game and recommended it if the thing worked.
I have a few gripes with this game but first the good parts, great story, graphics, detail, and story of a important event of history not talked about. But the game has a few things here and there that makes me rage, !!! BUT BEFORE YOU READ FURTHER, PLAY THE GAME YOURSELF. THIS WAS ONLY MY EXPERIENCE !!! Minefield - I can't see some of the fuses poking out for the achievement Front gunner - During the first part of the game, there is a plane that can only be hit a few time before waiting another turn, and speaking of turning, the frontal machine gun is very slow ( I don't no if that's intentional or not ) Flood lights - during the homecoming, after the radio is sent, the headlights can see odd angles that is should see and you can't fully see the light movement patterns unless you die more than a few times and have to wait the very long wait times to reset. Apparently, just run through it is the best strategy... removes any sneakiness about it Hit boxes - Collided with a wood beam, but that wood beam should not be that far that it would collide with the players hitbox which then I get caught by the floodlight. After the Germans rush to the bunker, I cannot get down into the trench, was stuck between first trench and the lower trench when crouching, had to reset. There is a lot of hitboxes acting out Respawns - Why does the player have to respawn backwards at every respawn Crouch - maybe a bug or on purpose? During the same floodlights section, after you crouch you cannot stand back up. So i just ran through the entirety of it Speech - few missing words during speech. Few lags/freezes spikes, upon respawning. Accuracy - this is just a pet peeve, shooting 7.7 machine guns at something make em go boom?
the game is decent and a nice peek into history, basically accurate and has a bunch of small hidden details and extensively informative. there isn’t too much of a story, serving a an anthology. the gameplay is fine and not that difficult (outside of trying to 100% the game, as i did). definitely have a mid-higher end device though, even with lower quality graphics it’s still a bit rocky in quality and performance at times, otherwise is sound. i’d recommend to give this game a shot, if you don’t want to 100%, it’s roughly an hour or less to beat, with a little extra time if you want all journals or to 100% the game.
