Assetto Corsa Rally seemed daunting to me at first. I've never been good at rallying, even in other games. Still, I picked it up because it looked incredible in the trailers and screenshots, and honestly, I was just itching for some rally. I went in expecting to crash constantly.
Instead, this game hooked me and made me a genuinely better driver. I came into it used to paddle shifters and maximum grip setups, and left having learned how to heel and toe downshift, how to use the handbrake properly, how to tune a car, and how to actually control oversteer instead of fearing it. I also learned that going fast isn't about flat out commitment (sorry, Colin McRae), it's about understanding your car's limits and extracting the most from it without upsetting the balance. It's also about finding the right flow through each turn and driving smoothly.
Thirteen hours in, and I'm still learning something new every session. I've driven close to 230 km in the Alsace stages alone, and I'm only just starting to branch out into the other locations. Greece has been a blast so far too, it's incredibly slippery, so you really have to watch your throttle control. The driving just feels that good. There are a few rough edges here and there, but right now I'm completely hooked. It looks great, it drives even better, and it keeps pulling me back in for one more stage.
There's something almost mystical about this game. It keeps bringing me back because of how simple it is on the surface yet how much depth it has underneath. It carries the same kind of mystique as my other favourite racing game, NFS Hot Pursuit. You just get in and drive, choosing from exotic locations and a genuinely premium set of cars. Unlike Hot Pursuit though, the main opponent here is yourself. It's elegant in a way that's hard for me to fully put into words.
If you're worried this game is only for hardcore sim fans, don't be. This game is for everyone. Yes, it's realistic, and yes, it will give you a genuine feel for what driving a real rally car is like. But don't come in expecting to be fast. Come in expecting to have fun, because even crawling through narrow dirt passes at 60 km/h is still a blast. The sense of speed is there regardless. Just enjoy the drive, don't worry about being good at the start, be patient, and improvement will come naturally.
It also plays great with a controller, which is honestly rare for this series. The other Assetto Corsa titles don't translate to controller nearly as well, but this one nails it. That said, if you have a wheel, use it. It's on another level.
