This is a great racing game from a gameplay point of view. The racing mechanics are super fun, there’s a wide selection of cool cars, and the graphics are truly amazing. They’ve also been constantly improved since release. But all of that is on the surface. Lurking underneath is a sadistic progression system. This game is free to play, and you *can* progress without paying a dollar, but it will stonewall you at every single point. Even Career Mode, which should at least offer smooth progression, will randomly require cars that only become obtainable for free through an event once every two years. That’s right, I said two years. Every other mode is even more overtly pay-to-win. Syndicate events require prerequisite cars upgraded to specific levels, and you quickly realize that you can *never*, and I mean *never*, complete one without paying money. And I don’t mean $2 here and there. I mean at least $20, even with a well-developed garage. This game isn’t just pay-to-win. It’s pay to have any kind of satisfying experience whatsoever. It’s clear that no consideration is given to free-to-play players, or even players who just buy the monthly Legend Pass. The closest thing to a fun, free mode this game ever had was Gauntlet. You compete with other players in time trials, climb the leaderboard, and get actually meaningful rewards. More importantly, Gauntlet points were one of the few ways to access high-end S-class cars without paying. For the past few months, I’ve been grinding that mode and saving toward finally unlocking the Devel Sixteen, one of the best cars in the game. Then Gameloft completely replaced every car in the Gauntlet store. The new cars let you buy blueprints, but not the keys. You can have a car with max blueprints, but if you don’t have the key, you still can’t drive it. It would be one thing if this change had been announced well beforehand so players could spend their saved points. Instead, they rolled it out with no advance warning, announcing it in the patch notes at the same time the change went live. For me, this was the last straw. I have nothing to play for anymore. Getting blueprints for a car whose key appears in a special event once every two years makes no sense. “But why don’t you just pay?” Because paying feels *awful*. There is no sense of achievement. You gain nothing except knowing you used your hard-earned money to get past another artificial roadblock and add yet another car to your garage. Worst of all, there’s no amount you can ever pay that means you won’t need to pay again later. The game keeps shifting the endgame goalpost, making most endgame cars unavailable and introducing new ones to keep you distracted. It was truly eye-opening when I realized top players were paying $100+ a month just to stay competitive. Why?? For what?? That’s why I’m quitting. I have no justifiable answer for that, and you shouldn’t either. Triple-A $70 games aren’t sounding so bad anymore. At least the content-to-dollar ratio is exponentially higher than it is here. This game is financial breadcrumbing manifest.
