Artifact is one of the more fascinating cautionary tales in modern PC gaming — a mechanically ambitious, genuinely smart card game that Valve managed to sink twice through business-model missteps, before ultimately abandoning it entirely and setting it free. The Good The core game design was, and still is, genuinely clever. Built around Dota 2's heroes and lanes, Artifact split matches across three simultaneous boards, forcing players to manage resources, initiative, and priority across all of them at once. Combined with a real-money item economy (in the original version) mirroring Dota's own itemization, it felt less like a typical Hearthstone/Magic clone and more like a strategy game wearing a card game's clothes. Even now, few digital card games have attempted anything as structurally ambitious as the three-lane system. It's completely free now, with everything unlocked. Following Valve's 2021 decision to end development, both existing versions of the game were made permanently free, with every card given to all players. Artifact Classic converted paying players' cards into non-tradable Collector's Edition versions while removing the entire pay-to-acquire economy, and Artifact Foundry (the 2.0 reboot) grants all cards simply through play. Whatever you think of the game itself, there's no financial barrier left to trying it. Two distinct versions to choose from. Artifact Classic is the 2018 original with its three-lane structure and Dota-flavored complexity intact; Artifact Foundry is the streamlined, more accessible 2.0 reboot Valve was building before it pulled the plug. Having both preserved and playable side by side is a neat, if bittersweet, artifact (no pun intended) of Valve's design process. The Less Good The community is essentially gone. This is the elephant in the room: matchmaking queues can be extremely long or simply fail to find opponents, especially outside of peak hours or in Artifact Foundry specifically, whose lower profile means an even thinner population than Classic. No further updates, ever. Valve has explicitly stated it does not plan to ship further gameplay updates to either version. What you see in 2026 is exactly what existed years ago — no balance patches, no new content, no bug fixes for anything discovered since. Artifact Foundry remains unfinished. Valve itself acknowledged that the 2.0 reboot was still missing polish and art assets when development stopped — it's playable and the core systems are there, but it visibly reads as an incomplete product. The original monetization scars still linger in perception. Even though the paid economy is gone, Artifact's reputation never recovered from its rocky 2018 launch (a $20 buy-in plus a real-money card marketplace, in a genre where free-to-play was already the norm), and that reputation keeps new players away regardless of the game now being free. No competitive scene, no content creators, no ecosystem. Whatever infrastructure once existed around Artifact (guides, decklists, streaming) has almost entirely dried up, making it hard to learn or stay engaged solo. Does It Hold Up in 2026? As a design exercise, yes — Artifact remains one of the most structurally interesting card games ever released, and it's worth booting up purely to see what Valve was attempting. As a living game you'll actually keep playing, not really: with no updates, a nearly nonexistent playerbase, and one version left permanently unfinished, Artifact today functions more like a free museum piece than an ongoing multiplayer experience. If you go in expecting a quiet, occasional curiosity rather than a game you'll sink hundreds of hours into, you'll get exactly that. Verdict 6/10 — A brilliant, undercooked idea that Valve gave up on twice before setting free. Worth trying once for the three-lane concept alone; don't expect anyone to be waiting for you on the other side of matchmaking.
Greatest game that valve has ever made. Wish it got more updates :)
played about 20 hours with friends and had a blast. the map design, especially in the nighttime mode, creates such an eerie vibe that keeps you on your toes. i love trying out different builds; right now, i'm focused on a stealthy approach, which makes for some hilarious fails. definitely worth picking up if you enjoy tactical gameplay with pals.
The game is boring af, and the tutorial is too long...
what a boring ass game
I still think they can bring back this materpiece.
