So I booted up ARMA 2 expecting a military shooter. What I got was a full-blown war simulator that makes real life seem arcadey. This game is so realistic I filed for VA benefits after a training mission. Let me walk you through my first mission: I spawned in. My commander barked 47 acronyms at me in 10 seconds. I opened the map, got lost, and closed it. Walked 45 minutes through a forest to reach the objective. Got shot in the leg by a bush. Or a sniper. Honestly not sure. Bled out while trying to figure out how to crouch. 10/10 experience. The controls? Oh, friend. ARMA 2 has one keybind for every action known to mankind. Want to go prone while aiming and checking your watch? That’s Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Q+Sneak+RealizeYouShouldHaveJoinedTheNavy. The AI is a masterpiece of chaos. Sometimes your squadmates expertly flank an enemy bunker. Other times they run face-first into a tree and shout “CONTACT!” at a cow. Also, if you love bugs, have I got a treat for you. One mission had my helicopter pilot land directly into the ocean while yelling “GO! GO! GO!” We all drowned, but at least we did it tactically. But I’ll be honest: when it all works, it’s the most intense, immersive, pants-wettingly stressful experience ever. You feel like part of a real unit. Until Gary from logistics runs you over with a tank while yelling “I THOUGHT REVERSE WAS R!” Final Rating: 7 invisible enemies out of 5 Come for the realism, stay because you forgot the controls to quit the game.

Was my first military simulator. Just coming back to revisit it now that I have a 2 pc setup to mess around with servers and learn how they work. For how old it is I could still recommend it.

Was good at the time but has been surpassed by newer games.
Stand Alone blows and never met the potential Arma 2 Dayz accomplished by volunteer devs that was so savory chewy juicy & satisfying even the most seasoned gamer was left wanting more and leaving them with a certain flavor that just could't be found anyplace else. I for one will say, if one were to merely remaster or repackage the game with upgraded textures on a newer graphics engine with what is already there using AI to polish up the textures, they could make this the best game ever, just imagine if they tied all the maps together and made missions that required changing maps or traveling outside the borders giving players more diverse missions and battle fields that could make this dying breed of game into a resurrected treasure.
I guess if you are into war sim, it's a great game. To me, the gameplay is outdated (no mouse sens custo?! Forced right click toggle ADS?!) and the voicing is mid at best. I think it is a really niche game.
