I try not to support demo-removing devs, no matter how promising the game looks and whether I had the chance to try it or not, but forgot to mark this ignored and ended up buying it. too late for a refund (again, regardless of price, it's not about that 1.24 eur I paid), so thought might as well play it. starts in a full screen-sized window with a really loud, skippable intro before any of the settings could be adjusted. settings that can only be accessed by pressing esc, there is no button to click in the menu, only for a list of cutscenes (much more important) and world select. settings are languages, separate volumes that don't affect the intro, nor half the sfx (seal and puffin sounds) and the usual buggy windowed mode without resolution options. it's resizable but going back to full screen after won't restore full screen resolution, everything will be all pixely. it literally takes 3 seconds to test it, something they clearly didn't bother with. restarting the game fixes this in some other games, lazy in the same fashion, but here only editing the registry restores full screen resolution. that's where progress is stored as well. and as always, there's more. I wanted to watch an accidentally skipped cutscene. unlike the noisy intro, they're silent and laid out vertically, one picture at a time, lots of blinding whiteness on the sides. fast-rolling animation, can't pause but can scroll once it's done. kept clicking and pressing, which eventually removed the entire ui and audio. started a level, exited, menu ui was back, audio wasn't, had to restart the game. again. the mouse wheel moves a whole pixel or two with every rotation in the cutscene select window, a bit more when the comic is shown, and does absolutely nothing elsewhere. it's a sliding game with a melting ice gimmick, each tile traveled shrinks whatever you're standing on. the grid is subtle but visible and there are small pieces of ice indicating how far the platforms can go. no move counter or limit otherwise, the level complete screen only has restart and continue, can't go back to the menu, makes replaying the odd imperfect level extra tedious. meltable ice acts as a stopping point, as do unmeltable icebergs that obviously can't be ridden. waves usher you in the indicated direction, orcas patrol in certain patterns, slip between them hitman go-style. they won't kill but will push you and icebergs under the right conditions. cold water embiggens platforms, gets introduced with a typo, then immediately ignored the next level. warm water melts ice twice as fast, whirlpools are portals. there's rarely more than a single pair but when there are, connected ones aren't marked. no new mechanics in the second half. 150 levels unlocked one by one in 6 worlds. the main goal is reaching your cub, the secondary and tertiary to knock the seal into water and shoo the puffin away. unlocks aren't based on completed levels but these goals. you might've solved a bunch of stages but can't access the bottom area without 70 puffins, for instance. terrible design. no level skip is another problem, compounded by completely linear progression within an area, as well as an absolutely useless hint button. all it does is adds numbers to tiles, crosses out icebergs, puts arrows over orcas, etc. instead of providing actual hints on how to solve the puzzle. and even this doesn't mark connected portals. non-rebindable controls are briefly, partially and randomly revealed on levels and in the pause menu. arrows, undocumented wasd and never mentioned mouse drag to move, 'r' to reset, 'z' to undo (no alternative, works from a fail state but not after a level reset), 'h' for the hint overlay and esc for settings. level number only in the pause menu, which now also includes an animation speed slider but the fastest still isn't fast enough, should be close to instant. level select is subpar too. levels are laid out on a mobiley vertical map instead of something convenient, can't tell at a glance what's imperfect. and of course mouse wheel doesn't scroll, have to drag endlessly like it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mobile game (which it is), or press up/down to go one by one, can't hold them. no tooltips on world selection, only keyboard navigation or clicking padlocks reveal unlock requirements. the former shows progress, the latter only the total needed, which is useless, as what you have isn't shown anywhere unless the location is selected with the keyboard. the red dot indicating something to unlock remains well after it's no longer true and can't tell if anything's incomplete within an area without visiting it. it's a big ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mess and this is just the overworld map. there's some text with a silent typewriter effect for speech bubbles, and while they can be shown immediately with space (unless it randomly skips the sentence instead, one of the innumerable bugs), they continue automatically, whether you had the chance to read them or not. as always, it should be an option and they should not play every time a level is reset, making you either wait or hammer space until they're gone, but that's also the only way to see them again if you missed them. incredibly annoying. as is the next level and some dialog briefly appearing BEFORE the cutscene, then the level starts properly. pleasant presentation (a few things on the sides can be clicked), uneven difficulty but mostly trivial with a few tricky puzzles. it's $5, same as the mobile versions for once, but it should work more like a pc game. it's as basic as it gets, yet has way too many bugs and annoyances, while missing some basic functionality. obviously can't be recommended and since they removed the demo, I won't bother with any of their other stuff.

Arctictopia starts with some comic and animated type sequences. You are following the story of two polar bears who keep getting separated by the melting ice. Each level has different size ice floats that will melt as you move in one direction. Some will be larger than others and you will need to effectively plot a path through the waters to figure out how to reunite the bears. The puzzles gets your brain thinking. Some are pretty straightforward and easy, while others require a few tries and some creative thinking. As the levels progress and more hazards are added, as expected things get much harder. Currently, the achievements are bugged. Almost none of them have unlocked for anyone who has played it, so I hope the developers can get out a patch soon for this and achievements are a great motivator for puzzle game players.
Very good casual puzzle game. Interesting mechanics, especially the later ones which can work in unexpected ways. Your goal is to get mama bear to her cub, but in some levels you have the optional challenge of 'visiting' your puffin or seal friend by hopping onto the ice pad they are sitting on. Some levels have both friends present, while others only have either one of them. If you visit your friends while successfully solving the level, you get rewarded with badges bearing their likeness which are shown attached to the level icon on the level-select screen. You need a set number of badges to unlock the later areas of the map. One interesting thing to note is that while it is always possible to visit both friends in a single attempt, You can still get both badges by visiting each in a separate attempt. There will be no distinction shown on the level-select screen, though I wished there was some indicator that showed whether you collected both badges in one go or separately, as it is obviously more challenging to collect them in one go. As a seasoned puzzle game player, the overall difficulty was easy enough for a smooth and relaxing experience, but still challenging enough to make me think a bit. Some of the trickier levels took me multiple tries and had me scratching my head, but they never stumped me enough to put the game down for long. There are 150 levels in total which took me a bit over 7 hours to complete. While the game was originally released on mobile, this PC port is well done. It has full keyboard controls, though it would have been nice if you could use your mouse for the menus. It also has QoL features such as an unlimited undo function and the option to speed up animations. The animations are smooth and pleasing to the eye, but I can understand some players wanting to just blitz through the puzzles. My only real complaints are that the Steam achievements still don't work and that the game doesn't have multiple save slots nor cloud saving, but these issues have nothing to do with gameplay itself. All things considered, the game is WELL worth $5. Update: Steam achievements are NOW WORKING!
Charming puzzle game. Puzzle level is from your five year old to grown adult, most were a good brainteaser for the casual puzzle gamer, and some were unsolvable for someone as casual as myself. The drawings are cute, but if they tried to tell a story, they failed at that. Game should have been clear from the beginning that you need to find animals a certain amount of times to unlock new parts of the map and progress in the game. The map itself isn't organized well at all, but you rarely have to use it. The music is nice and chill, but the sound effect upon completing a level completely clashes with it. Also, the sounds don't stop when the window is unfocused. So I had to mute the game soon despite having muted the sound effects that were disturbing the chill music. Despite these shortcomings, I enjoyed my time in this game a lot, so I can still recommend it for any price below 2€.
