march 2022 edit: major content update with endless mode, 40 new quests, etc. at first glance, apotheker looks like time and shop management hell (for me anyway, not into that sort of thing), but it really isn't, despite some incorrectly applied store tags, which is par for the course these days. first and foremost it's a game about mixing potions using some tools and all sorts of wacky ingredients, with the ultimate goal of creating the elixir of life to save your dying grandma. the game plays out over up to 14 days and you can try and create 3 potions per day, one for each time of day. start in the morning, make a potion, now it's afternoon, make a potion, now it's evening, make a potion, next day. there is no actual timer, but potions can have a deadline. only random people will bother you at first, then more prominent citizens will come a-knockin' with special requests, resulting in more money and rare ingredients and tools. some of the tools have to be bought and ingredients will of course keep coming and going, but once you get a piece of one, it will be available to buy from the shop anytime. there is no reason not to accept every request, no repercussions if you don't fulfill them, besides small changes in the narrative, and saying yes to everything simply keeps your options open. it's very much a have your cake and eat it too kinda game, as it turned out, not much choice and they don't really matter. I tried to go with one faction by doing something extreme and didn't do the opposing one's request and all they did was they cut ties with me and got the potion from elsewhere. couldn't change the outcome of the story, so I wouldn't say the game has different endings either, all 5 npcs can be pleased in a single playthrough, it only takes a bit of balancing, and just 3 makes the final potion trivial to make, even before day 14 if you want. speaking of potions, here's how the meat of the game works. each potion has 3 requirements, shown on the left: health, energy and flavor, and they can be positive (curative, invigorating, tasty) or negative (toxic, sedative, disgusting) and you need to find the ingredients and manipulate them in a way that all the bars end up within the highlighted areas. there are tons of choices, each with different stats, which can be modified with tools that enchance one characteristic, remove another, switch two of them, etc. only two modifications can be made on a piece of ingredient and none can be repeated, so you can't crush the same frog heart twice, for example, but why would you anyway? the potion-in-progress can also be modified with a different set of tools next to the cauldron. they do more or less the same as the other actions, increase or decrease one or more of the characteristics of the whole thing. they can only be used once per potion and best not applied until some ingredients are in place, obviously. besides these, there is no hard limit on the number of ingredients or actions, whatever works, as long as stability doesn't reach zero, resulting in a big bang. there's a gauge for that, showing in advance what the move you're about to pull will do. no undo, but I was fine with it, most potions can be done in a few steps and solutions are relatively open-ended, as I said, whatever works. the game offers 3 difficulty settings to suit all playstyles, the first being mine, the last for masochists who thrive on failure and repetition. experimental and efficiency difficulties give back all the ingredients upon failure and time stands still until you succeed, and experimental is more generous with money and stability, so it's less about resource management and more about finding the right ingredients with more room for error before an explosion. expert, on the other hand, works with permanent choices and time moves on even after failing to create a potion. the 'clean your shop' button is available on all 3 difficulties, it advances time and gives you some money, should you find yourself in a tight spot. the presentation is really nice, but I wasn't a fan of some of the writing. I don't mind breaking the 4th wall or anachronisms in general, but here it somehow felt really out of place, medieval-like setting with a bit of steampunk sprinkled on top, with 'pump me up, bruh' and such in potion requests. there's not much to the narrative either, some power struggle, people fighting over the control of the city, a farmer lady with a dead husband, plus crazy old maurice, the only character that stands out somewhat. 3 save slots allow that many games to be played at the same time, autosaves happen after every potion/time of day, and the game also saves when you quit, but not the current potion's progress if you were working on one, so there's no real difference, nor need for mid-potion saving. separate volume settings, resolutions, windowed mode, also while playing, optional tutorial, text can be made to appear with a click and there's no gibberish during dialog, both are really appreciated. on the flipside, the ui could use a bit of tweaking. some text boxes should be a little bigger to remove unnecessary scrollbars, the background for selected items isn't great either, makes the text hard to read, and I would've liked fewer loading screens. there are also some grammar mistakes here and there, and selecting and deselecting tools is a bit finicky sometimes. it's a simple but complex game with all the conditions to meet and tons of ingredients and tools, lots of factors to consider without being overwhelming, and the 120+ potions somewhat reduce repetition in case you want to go for another playthrough. not much point if you manage everything in one go, though completing the game on expert might take a few tries. I didn't bother with that but enjoyed my experimental experience. took my time and some potions proved to be trickier than expected, but it can be completed in about 3 hours. since it's very nicely done, has all the necessary functionality without major issues and offers replayability, I don't think the asking price is too high either. also, a year and a half after release endless mode got added, along with a bunch of new stuff, so you can continue playing after the credits for as long as you want. there's even a daily newspaper and ways to stock up on ingredients every day.

Phineas: asking for increasingly strong potions Me, yelling at my screen like a madman: My strongest potions would kill you traveler! You can't handle my strongest potions! You'd better go to a seller that sells weaker potions! 10/10 potion seller simulator
Puzzle games can be pretty hit or miss for me, so of course I have lots of them partially played in my library. This was one of the most fun puzzle games I've ever played; It's super chill with great vibes and an interesting backstory! It took 6 hours for me to get through the casual mode, and I spent most of them at my computer with snacks and tea, cause it's impossible not to feel cozy playing it. Especially with the music! So good. Since it's an indie game and I couldn't google it, I will say: in the tutorial part at the start of the game, I bought a piece of equipment in the "office", and when I went to make the next potion, it prompted me to buy that same piece of equipment, but the store was "sold out" and I couldn't close the prompt or continue. It was early on anyway, so I just started over, but don't do that :P
TL;DR - This is a really fun game and the devs are super responsive and nice!! I'd like to start that I have a bias towards games that include themes of alchemy, so when I found out about this game it was an instant buy. But to my loss, I had a bug that rendered the game unplayable, but such is the way sometimes. So I emailed the support team about this bug and got a response in 15 minutes! The bug was patched within a few days and I can now enjoy a game I've been looking forward to. Now onto my thoughts about the game-play; it's a puzzle-game for sure. Not particularly hard, but enough that I can have something to do while I listen to streams or talk in discord. To put it simply, the game is tricky enough to get me thinking, but not enough where I must drown out my surroundings to focus. I personally really love this level of difficulty, but if you're looking for something to really challenge you or you're someone who'd rather look up solutions, this game might not be for you. But as for my review, as I've previously mentioned, I'm really enjoying the game so far!
Fun puzzle game with a really cool core mechanic. Balancing ingredients, tools, and money in just the right order and balancing different tasks for different people makes the game exactly the right balance of challenging and enjoyable. I enjoyed supporting both sides of a violent coux and being paid handsomely for it.
Very well made puzzle game! Super fun game when you need like a chill game between playing triple A titles.
Great game with an awesome story, music, and a lot of experimenting! Fun to play if you want to relax or if you want to stream it so your friends can yell at you to not keep adding glass shards to your potion.
This is a fun casual game about brewing potions. Some of them are tricky but not too difficult. No penalty for restarting a potion if you mess up which is nice.
Hidden gem - STRONG RECOMMENDATION Personally I don't like management games much. Or potionmakers (pet peeve about witches, especially 'cute' ones) But this game is something different, and I really loved ! The short: Play with lots of freedom in choosing from a huge range of plain-to-extraordinary ingredients and tools, to make lots of potions in the old potion-makers shop in the village, to save your old granny from dying. Explosions will happen! Disgusting and weird potions will also happen!! Pleasant and unstressed. Can be played in short stretches or longer. Replayability. No bugs or glitches, works fine on even simple gear and mouse. Three levels of difficulty - I tried easy and normal. Both were very calm and pleasant experiences, no time pressure, all potions can be redone if not working out. And your shop will stay standing even after explosions ;-) And there's an endless mode too :-) Looks sort of like a shop management game, but is really more of a quest solving puzzly sort of game with quite a bit of underlying story. But all action happening in-store. Choices matter a bit, in the here and now, though less I think for the overarching story as such. It's old-fashioned and nice-looking (although some odd modern slang in there as well). Characters somewhat formulaic but still enjoyable (the crazy scientist, hearty farmer-woman, stiff business type, etc.) Basically: You've been handed your sick gran's old potion shop, and you have a fortnight to manage to make a potion to make her well, or else she'll die. To help you do so, you have to make potions for other people in the village to earn potion ingredients and tools - some given in thanks and some bought for money. Your choices affect people, and village life. You can make up to 3 potions per day (or opt out by 'cleaning the shop'), and you have choice in which ones you want to undertake. You start out with only a few ingredients and tools, and need to satisfy customers to get more. There is no 'one preset solution' to how to make the potions, especially later into the game with many tools and ingredients to choose from. ---------------- SPECIAL NOTES: Animals/cruelty: Many ingredients are animal parts, and I think it would be difficult to get through the game using only non-animal ingredients (I don't know what I'd have done without those frog hearts, for example. Or the slugs...). A few quests involve killing or maiming animals, but those can just be refused. Killing: For two of the story lines attached to the 5 main characters (farmer, scientist, mercenary, revolutionary, businessman) - there comes a point where you're asked to make lethal potions. One can be resolved into something non-lethal, although that isn't apparent until later in the game (- and if you're asked for a protecting potion for someone with asthma, then make that a priority!). And the other one, at the end, appears to not have killed after all, only incapacitated. Although, again, that isn't clear until afterwards. If you're feeling uncomfortable with not knowing how those lethal potion quests will turn out, the game can be played - and granny saved ! - even with refusing those quests, and 'losing' their storylines. Although the achievements can't be 100% without them. Hints: A couple of practical tips I wish I had been aware of from the start: - It is possible, but very, very finicky to make Granny's healing potion without any Vial of inspiration at all. It's a little bit tricky but doable with 1 vial (just watch out for that instability!). But you can be given a vial from more than 1 'friend' during the one fortnight, if you juggle their requests so they fit into your available days. And saving Gran gets a lot easier with 2 or more vials. I didn't realise that until my 3rd game... - Understanding the increasing and decreasing of characteristics: For ingredients and for potions, increasing means making it more extreme from its present level (a bit blue becomes more blue, for example). And vice versa for decrease (a bit blue becomes less blue - but does not cross over the neutral into green). - The game forum is not very active, but there's good and friendly help to be had on their Discord. If needed.
