Altered Algorithm is an experimental VR action-adventure that combines interactive storytelling, first-person exploration, environmental puzzles, gunplay, and full-motion video in an attempt to create something closer to an inhabitable science-fiction movie. Developed and published by Parable Worlds, the game is presented as the first episode of a larger concept and remains an Early Access title. Its scope is relatively modest, but its ideas are considerably more ambitious. Rather than treating FMV as conventional prerecorded cutscenes, Altered Algorithm attempts to integrate filmed characters and visual elements directly into its three-dimensional environments, giving players opportunities to interact with them while progressing through the story. The adventure takes place in an alternate version of Los Angeles in 1983, although this is far removed from the technology of the real historical period. In this timeline, technological development has accelerated for decades, creating a society determined to eliminate danger through prediction and surveillance. The protagonist, Jeremiah, works as a Field Adjuster responsible for eliminating threats identified through advanced predictive systems. Much of society's security revolves around CASSI, the Centralized AI Safety Surveillance Infrastructure, a government program designed to anticipate dangers and keep the population protected. The arrangement collapses when underground gang leader Kenji Kimora compromises the threat algorithm Jeremiah depends upon, triggering an altered simulation and a catastrophic lockdown. This premise provides more substance than simply giving the player an excuse to shoot enemies in VR. Jeremiah's journey into the city's troubled underworld explores the contradiction between guaranteed safety and individual freedom. A world designed to eliminate risk eventually forces its protagonist to confront uncertainty, personal choice, and his own identity. The game's science-fiction themes are therefore closely connected to its gameplay philosophy. Instead of portraying the player as someone merely following a predetermined sequence, Altered Algorithm wants searching, solving problems, fighting, and making choices to become parts of the narrative itself. Parable Worlds describes this approach through its concept of Natural Narrative, where player behavior influences how events develop. Exploration is mixed with detective work, environmental manipulation, puzzle solving, and ranged combat. Some puzzles require detective tools, while others encourage players to examine their surroundings or use available weapons to interact with the environment. This gives the experience more variety than a straightforward VR shooter. Moving between investigation and combat also suits the action-thriller atmosphere, allowing quieter moments of discovery to contrast with more dangerous encounters. The game's defining feature remains its implementation of FMV. Live-action characters exist alongside real-time 3D environments, creating a strange mixture of filmed performances and virtual reality. It is an interesting technical and artistic experiment because FMV traditionally places the player outside recorded footage. Here, the intention is to make filmed characters feel like inhabitants of a space the player can physically explore. There are even basic FMV enemy interactions and AI systems. The implementation can reveal the limitations of a small independent production, but the underlying concept remains distinctive and gives Altered Algorithm an identity that conventional VR adventures often lack. Its Early Access condition is also impossible to ignore. Parable Worlds originally described the available build as a foundation that would eventually receive a richer narrative, improved controller interactions, better gunplay, expanded puzzles, more sophisticated FMV integration, and a greater number of interactive objects. A possible non-VR version was also discussed if sufficient demand existed. The Steam page, however, currently warns that the developer's Early Access information and timeline may be outdated because the last developer update occurred more than two years ago. That makes it difficult to judge the project according to its promised future rather than what players can actually experience now. The small development team helps explain both the creativity and roughness of the project. Altered Algorithm was conceived with assistance from artists and filmmaking partners, and its episodic structure was intended to make ambitious visual storytelling possible without requiring the resources of a major studio. The developers envisioned shorter, more concentrated episodes with richer environments rather than an enormous campaign. Episode 1 is also free to play, significantly lowering the barrier to trying such an unconventional VR experiment. The developers previously considered either keeping the first episode free after completion and charging for subsequent installments or eventually introducing a small price, although those plans should not be considered certain given the outdated development roadmap. Technically, the game demands reasonably capable VR hardware despite requiring only a small amount of storage. The listed minimum specifications include Windows 10, an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, 4 GB of available storage, and Meta Quest 2 VR support. Recommended specifications increase the processor and graphics requirements to a Ryzen 7 3700X and RTX 3070. English is supported for both interface and full audio. The content includes cartoon violence, firearms, and violent situations, fitting its dystopian action-thriller setting. Altered Algorithm ultimately succeeds more as an intriguing demonstration of interactive VR filmmaking than as a completely realized adventure. Its futuristic 1983 Los Angeles, predictive surveillance system, detective gameplay, environmental puzzles, combat, and live-action characters create an unusual combination that deserves recognition for originality. The central themes surrounding freedom, technological control, identity, and the consequences of eliminating risk also provide a meaningful foundation for its story. At the same time, basic mechanics, Early Access roughness, limited scope, and uncertainty surrounding continued development prevent the concept from reaching its full potential. For VR players interested in experimental storytelling, interactive cinema, retro-futuristic science fiction, and unusual independent projects, Altered Algorithm is worth experiencing precisely because it tries something different. Being free makes its unfinished qualities easier to accept, while its fusion of FMV and explorable virtual environments offers a glimpse of an interesting direction for narrative VR games. It may feel more like the beginning of an ambitious idea than its final realization, but that idea is creative enough to leave an impression. Rating: 6/10
