Aggelos 2 is an explosive action-platformer where lightning-fast combat, precision platforming, and two opposing worlds collide. As an Aggelos, the highest order of angels, you are chosen by Balro to venture through the Kingdom of Lumen, domain of the supreme God of Light. But with Lumen under siege and the Gods facing imminent defeat at the hands of the Army of Darkness, you are forced to embrace a shadowy new form to survive the chaos of both light and dark realms.
While your angelic side favors a slower, disciplined approach, your demon form is highly agile, aggressive, and bristling with dark powers. Mastering the shift between both forms is key to survival, and only by balancing order and chaos can you hope to overcome formidable enemies, deadly obstacles, and challenging puzzles along your path.

Explore two massive, overlapping maps, each with their own unique characteristics, enemies to fight, secrets to discover, and challenges to overcome.

Switch between Angel and Demon forms to change the world and your playstyle, from precise defenses to fast assaults, mastering timing, strategy, and reflexes.

Take on hordes of enemies and conquer 13 massive bosses across both realms. Steel yourself for memorable encounters that build on the original game’s signature battles.

Solve challenges by mastering skills, memorising routes, manipulating mechanisms, avoiding traps, and interacting with the world to reveal secrets and new paths.

Collect orbs to unlock devastating special attacks, boost your strength and increase your survivability, adding a tactical layer to your progression.

Unlock new skills as you progress, from flight and wall grabs to dashes and powerful special attacks, offering up new ways to explore and reach previously inaccessible areas.

Striking pixel art and detailed sprites designed to complement smooth, fast-paced 2D gameplay.

Eggs. Eggs everywhere. Lots of backtracking searching for eggs. Upgrades gated by eggs. Eggs must be in fashion after Void Stranger and Animal Well. Don't ask how I know...

I've been looking forward to Aggelos 2 ever since it was announced, even though I thought a sequel shouldn't happen, since the first one had a perfect, legend-worthy sentimental ending. However, I wasn’t bothered that they developed a sequel; instead, I was excited to step into another great example of a Metroidvania. While it met most of my expectations, a lot of things also left a sour taste in my mouth and reminded me once again that I shouldn’t buy a game as soon as it's out. The game pretty much plays and looks like the first one, except you obtain wings at the beginning rather than later in the game. It also gives you a ranged projectile attack, which you will rely on more than the sword this time. The transition between demon and angel form is also interesting, and they both have their dedicated skills and attack forms that are useful in their own way. The map is also doubled in size, which raises a huge problem that I will get to later. The currency is actually capped unless you find shells that increase it, which is quite a strange choice but makes sense once you play the game. The bosses and level design are alright, and the soundtrack is great as expected. However, the ability to travel between dimensions could be a good idea on paper, but a huge map means tedious backtracking, especially if there are more than 100 collectibles spread across it. Now it wouldn’t be such a big deal if the game had some sort of system that shows where you’ve missed the collectibles, but Aggelos 2 lacks such a feature. The developer promised that it’s going to be added in a future update, but let me point out that it’s 2026, and it should be the norm in any Metroidvania. There is no challenge in wasting people’s time by making them look for a needle in a haystack. The “Perfectionist” achievement also seems to be bugged since it doesn’t trigger consistently after meeting certain requirements, and I’m hoping there’s a fix coming for that too, along with making the navigation a bit easier for newcomers because the map is huge and it’s easy to get lost. I was hoping that it’d be smooth sailing, but such hiccups are really irritating, especially in a game that you had high expectations for. The story is actually not bad, but as I’ve mentioned before, it wasn’t needed. I would’ve enjoyed it a lot more if we played as another angel instead of the same one. Another game is being teased at the true ending, and I’m looking forward to that one as well. Who knows, maybe they’ll wrap it up in such a way that it will satisfy me just like the first one. One thing is certain, though. Whether you’re an MS or an NES fan, Aggelos 2 will scratch that retro itch.
TL;DR
A decent sequel to a masterpiece of a game. It has a huge map, new ways to attack and traverse, but several problems as well. Wait for another patch before you grab this one unless you want to pull your hair out looking for that one egg on a huge map.
Really fun game! Loved Aggelos 1 as well. Monster Boy games are some of my favorites. I hope we get some DLC update-y things for this one, sorry devs, no rest for the awesome!
If you enjoyed the 1st Aggelos the you will like the second game. If it a rock solid 2D action game with plenty of action and platforming. The graphics are charming and colorful and pop and are a throw back to the 16 bit era of SNES and Genesis. And the music hops along with the action. Theres noting complex here as you make you way through the metroidvania like areas and its not overly challenging. So if you want a 2D game you can just engage in and have fun then I can recommend this one.
Aggelos 2 is a good game and an excellent sequel. The first game was pretty solid and did a good job of recreating the style of the SMS era (and the Wonder Boy series in particular) The sequel truly feels like a bigger game: its style is more reminiscent of the SMD or SNES eras As many reviewers have already noted, the game feels like a mix of Wonder Boy and Mega Man. From first - exploration and a progression system, while taking its color palette, movement and enemy/boss sprites style from the second.
(At the end of the game, some locations even look like the final levels of the Contra series)
The boss encounters are interesting, requiring you to use both light and dark attacks. The only "con" worth mentioning is the map design - to make hunting for collectibles less tedious, it would have been helpful to mark areas where items had already been found (like in Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom), saving the player from running laps around the entire map for the fourth time
Very fun, reminds me of all my favorite 16 bit games with my childhood. Better than I even expected, definitely recommend this game.
Aggelos 2 is a Pixel Art 2D Metroidvania and is a sequel to the first game Aggelos, where you play once again as angel and face a fearless formidable opponent from a war of thousand years ago. The game offers 2 huge interconnected worlds where enemies and environments differ in each and you will need to adapt to each. Your character gets different transformations between light and darkness and each has its own unique abilities and capabilities. The controls were super solid and character movements were flawless, you will need to switch back and forth during battles where you counter block each abilities to its respective color with your 2 different forms. There are lots of hidden secrets in almost every corner of the 2 worlds, from health upgrades, max magic and many other upgrades that will support you greatly on your journey. I was surprised by how the game surpassed the first one by a big difference, the world is 3x larger, lots of abilities and upgrades, boss designs as well as many other differences, hats off to the devs for making this amazing sequel. The OST and music were nostalgia where you can see the effort and love put into making those, hours of gaming will keep you hooked while listening to the different tracks of each zone!! Boss designs were pretty awesome and really challenging, you can get overwhelmed quickly if you're not careful or countering with the respective forms matching the colors. It was fun as well to tackle each single one while floating and jump around the screen. It's really recommended especially if you were a big fan of the first game or metroidvanias in general. This one surpasses the first one by miles and will get you hooked immediately, I enjoyed both the first one and the sequel. Overall Rating 10/10
I liked the game! Enough to 100% it on Hard Mode! I really enjoyed the graphics and music as well! Although despite my enjoyment, Its not without its faults, as I encountered a decent amount of bugs (Though they are being ironed out, and didn't ruin my enjoyment of the game) and certain things in the game that could have been conveyed a bit better (Example: Theres a certain type of door you're allowed to open after a certain point, but it doesn't outright tell you when you're able to). The game can also get REALLY tough at times (Keeping in mind I exclusively played it on Hard Mode), and hidden collectibles felt so important to survive. I like my games Hard, so I actually liked this! It placed alot more importance on collecting things! Although you'll most likely be dying alot and also intentionally dying to reach your previous checkpoint as well after a certain point, as what you've collected is saved on death if you choose to continue. I think it also taught me something I already knew, in that this is not the genre for me. I think I prefer the scale of the Wonder Boy games, as they can be a bit more streamlined and less overwhelming, where this felt a bit too giant for my taste (Which is typical for the genre). Markers were a big help in making me feel less anxious while playing at least (Although there were a couple times I wish I could place more than 20 at a time) In short, Its like a mix between Wonder Boy and Gargoyles Quest 2 in a big Metroidvania package... and I guess a bit of Ikaruga too!
