Age of Wonders: Planetfall

Been a long time coming for this review, at this point I would love if they can make a Planetfall 2. Even with Age of Wonders 4 out I still find this game has its own flavor that still hasn't been satiated quite yet and so I feel that these two games can co-exist at the same time.

It's a beautiful, best title in the Age of Wonders series. Sure, it is its own spinoff. It doesn't have a very detailed campaign. The races' lore aren't very fleshed out, except in units' descriptions. But the Empire mode is just excellent, and the whole strategy/tactics layer is balanced perfectly for me. My favorite game in the series, now complete. Just get all DLCs. The Good: - Empire mode has unlocks, many possibilities, real progression, your custom heroes - Runs beautifully on my PC with stable 60 fps in all battles, looks beautiful - Has the best mechanics in all the Age of Wonders series, you can customize units, you have operations, there is chance to hit, many many statuses and abilities - Nicely balanced economic improvement, the ideal number of provinces and buildings - You can observe other players' battles in multiplayer, which I found a very illuminating experience while playing with a master tactician friend of mine The Bad: - Sometimes bugs. Once I lost a leader after completing Empire mission. Once when played with a friend, when we were allied, she did not get a victory screen on allied victory (it showed for me that she won). Bugs like these can turn people against a game, you know. The Neutral: - Some races feel weird. Bugs and robotic skeletons. DLCs fixed that though, I think. - Only some races have viable tanks. I loved it and enjoyed it. Recommended.

I do wish steam had a neutral review, I dont hate this game, but I cant fully recommend it as I found it dull. The story seems to borrow a lot of the same ideas present in Warhammer 40k, with a similar set up to the Age of Strife - a galaxy wide cataclysm causes an end to space travel causing the advanced human empire to collapse in on itself devolving into techno barbarians and machine cults and only the incredibly powerful Pysker Emperor can restore the human empire one planet at a time in a grand crusade. The game really doesnt seem to have any connection with the age of wonders video games, with the name seeming to just be tacked on. Overall its graphics are pretty good, the combat system is great and seems inspired by the cover/move and shoot system of xcom and I enjoyed it for a few hours, finishing the human campaign and then played a skirmish game before I got tired of it.
