It’s the year 197X…
A mysterious force calling itself the Cosmic Demon Empire suddenly launched an assault on Earth, commanding an army of colossal beast-shaped war machines known as the Space Beasts. Meanwhile, at a certain top-secret Space Robot Laboratory somewhere in the Far East, preparations had been made “just in case something like this ever happened”. Thus, the newly developed transforming and combining combat robot GEPPY-X was deployed into action.
Never before released outside of Japan, 70’s-Style Robot Anime GEPPY-X will now be available to play worldwide!
A love letter to Japanese mecha anime from the 70’s, this fast-paced 2D side-scrolling shooter has undergone a transformation of its own. Battle the Cosmic Demon Empire with quality of life improvements such as faster load times, rewind, save states, and more!

I hardly disagree with people calling it a parody. This game is a nostalgic love letter to the golden age of Mecha anime. If you've been a fan of old anime (more precisely VERY old anime by today's standards), you will enjoy all the small details, every remark, and even silly adverts because all of them reflect many trends of that time. Apart from obvious Go Nagai titles like Getter Robo, Mazinger, Grendizer, and even Devilman in the ending, you will find tons of Gundam references, including Zaku-inspired enemies, and even the one and only Shuichi Ikeda (Red Comet Char) as one of the villains. Even a Tetsujin 28 reference in the form of Type 64. The seiyu cast and the singers in the soundtrack are also legendary and clearly pay homage to the long-gone era. Yes, it is a remaster of the PS1 game. Yes, you can still emulate it if you find it. Yes, the price is high, although I would argue that there are at least 3 distinct playthroughs in terms of story and many extra modes that can engage you in the game for at least 5 or more hours. And as a non-pro in scroll shooters, it was quite challenging for me in terms of difficulty. If you don't know at least half of the titles I've mentioned, the game is not for you. If you're a scroll shooter enthusiast, this game is probably not for you. But if you are a big enjoyer of the old mecha era in anime, and you rarely play scroll shooters, this game will be not only a blast from the past, but also a challenging experience. Highly recommend on sale.

70s-style Robot Anime Geppy-X has to be one of the most delightful shmups I've ever played. This is how all remastered should be done.

Fun shmup with fantastic presentation and this isn't a lazy cash grab, they've worked on this to give it features missing from the original release although whether that's enough to justify full price or wait for sale is up to you. I'm a super robot fan so easy yes, if you're unsure, wait for a sale Difficulty is fine even with my old man reflexes and it plays fine on the steam deck. Only real meh point is that the third mode of the robot you'll only use when forced or you switch to by accident as it's short range is garbage whereas the other two forms are great. That still gives you more variety than generic space fighter in most of these games. On that point, it could be deliberate as in fairness, the source material 70s shows usually had this issue.
Absolutely recommended. A fun shmup, and most importantly a love letter to the anime I grew up with and still love to this day. The gameplay is fluid, there are no major bugs or issues, the story is tropey like it should be and absurdly self aware of its own campiness. MAKE MORE GAMES LIKE THIS.
