3x64 is a simple puzzle game that takes the basic idea of matching coloured blocks and adds one thing that makes it quite a bit more interesting, the gravity keeps changing. I am placing and connecting blocks while the board keeps shifting which direction things fall. Each direction has its own active colour, so I have to pay attention to what colour is useful at that moment instead of just clearing whatever happens to be nearby. It is easy to understand once I get going, but the faster the gravity changes, the more difficult it becomes to keep up. The changing gravity is definitely the best part for me. I can get used to blocks falling one way and then suddenly have to rethink the whole board when gravity moves somewhere else. I have to plan around the current direction while also leaving myself enough space to deal with whatever comes next. That gives the game a nice feeling of pressure without needing complicated rules. I like that the challenge comes from reacting quickly and making good decisions rather than memorising a huge set of mechanics. The powerups add a lot more depth too. There are 16 different ones, and I can either use the basic powerups from my limited slots straight away or save them and craft stronger versions. Some can manipulate blocks, slow down time or help deal with the more dangerous parts of the board. There are also special minigame style powerups based around things like Arkanoid and shooting, which are a nice surprise when I get one. I like having to decide whether I should use a powerup now or hold onto it for a harder situation later. The extra block types make the later parts more interesting as well. Iron blocks cannot be removed normally and need a powerup, while threat blocks hide a random negative effect and have to be destroyed before they activate. That means I cannot just concentrate on making the biggest possible matches. I also have to watch out for problems building up on the board. The whole thing gradually gets more hectic as the gravity changes faster, and I think that is when the basic matching system starts to show its best side. The biggest weakness for me is that the game is still built around one main loop. I am connecting blocks, clearing them and trying to survive for as long as possible, so once I have played enough rounds, the lack of major variation becomes noticeable. The difficulty can also ramp up pretty quickly, and there are moments where I am reacting so fast that I am not really thinking as much as I would like. I enjoy the pressure, but I think the game could have used a few more proper modes or objectives to give me another reason to keep playing once I had learned the main system. I do like the small extras around the main game. There is an interactive tutorial, 21 achievements and online leaderboards where I can keep track of how far I managed to get. There is also a separate free retro minigame that uses the same changing gravity idea but presents it like an old game from decades ago. I think these little additions suit the game because they do not get in the way of the main puzzle. The overall presentation is colourful and clean, and I appreciate that the game has proper colourblind options as well. Overall, 3x64 is a clever little puzzle game that takes a familiar matching idea and gives it enough of a twist to stand out. The changing gravity, powerups, dangerous blocks and increasing speed work well together, and I like having to think about the board differently every time the direction changes. It does become repetitive once I have played enough and the limited number of main modes stops it from reaching the really high scores for me. Still, it is easy to pick up, surprisingly tense when the game speeds up and free to play, so I think it is well worth trying when I want a quick puzzle challenge that is a little different from the usual match three formula.
