1917 - The Alien Invasion DX is a memorization shoot em up by Andrade Games. All of that is very true. This is a game that might feel a bit unfair if you go in thinking you can just react your way through the entire thing. This is possible in a lot of shmups but not this one. When you know the levels of which there are eight it does become a lot easier. The length of the levels are pretty good and the boss fights are fun. I would argue that they are easier than most of the levels though. The game has a few unlockables and reward players beating it several times. It also has a good mix of achievements. At this point I should mention that the game has a big drawback. For quite a few graphics cards this game is unplayable. It has massive stuttering and for a shmup than is really bad. Have this in mind when going for this game. If not for that I would easily recommend this game. Now I can only give a soft thumbs up.
Vertical bullet hell with an alternate history theme. Good controls. Part reflex based, part memorizer. Interesting boss mechanics. Gorgeous retro presentation and graphics. Nice audio. Challenging.
Too short to be a good traditional shoot'em up, too easy to be a decent bullet hell. Not impessed much by art style and music is forgettable. Boring.
I appreciate that the promo trailer was up-front and admitted it was a "Memorization Shooter", but that doesn't save it from being a sub-standard STG in my opinion. The patterns and ultra-fast bullets just aren't that fun, and it doesn't feel rewarding to memorize the levels in order to beat them consistently. The first 4 levels are also quite easy, but spikes at level 5 with a tedious auto-scroller level that's absolutely packed with way too many enemies in cramped corridors. I do appreciate the artwork and sense of style though. And hearing the lines "(((shield up))), (((power up))), COMBO UNLEASHED!!!!" gets me every single time - but bad game still bad.
Some of the "novelty" mechanics are too obnoxious and have no business being in a shoot em up game. Only for fans of experimental stuff.
It's great at what it does: A fast-paced arcade shoot-em-up in an alternate WWI a-la Necrovision. Electronic soundtrack is pumping, atmospheric and very fitting. However, I rarely play it for more than 15 mins at a time If you find the setting intriguing and/or want a quick game to load up and play little and often, you'll hopefully find enjoyment here
Despite my long playtime this is a game I only partially liked. As far as SHMUPs go this is certainly one of the games of all time. It isn't bad. There's lots to like. I think I'm just less into the whole bullet hell aspect than I need to be in order to love this.
