Zoria: Prologue is a free introduction to a bigger tactical RPG, and I think it does a pretty good job of showing me what the full game is trying to be. I lead a party of four heroes through the ruined lands of Uram, fighting monsters, exploring dangerous areas and slowly building up my group. The world has a dark fantasy feel to it, with forests, caves and old buildings that have been overrun by creatures. I like that the game gives me a proper party to manage instead of making the whole experience about one character. The turn based combat is easily the strongest part for me. Each character has their own skills and perks, so I have to think about where I place everyone and what abilities are useful in each fight. I can attack from close range or at a distance, heal and protect my party, apply effects such as stun and immobilise, and use elemental attacks when they are useful. The environment can also matter during fights, which gives me more options than simply selecting an attack every turn. It is not the deepest tactical system I have played, but there is enough here for me to actually think about my moves. I also like the progression outside combat. I can improve each character's skills, manage equipment and keep an eye on things like vitality and durability. The game gives me reasons to explore because certain character skills can open up areas or quests that I would not otherwise be able to reach. I enjoy that because my party is useful outside of battle as well as inside it. The outpost system adds another layer, letting me unlock new parts of the base and assign followers to missions where they can bring back resources, items and experience. The biggest problem for me is that this is still a prologue, so the experience naturally feels limited. It is designed to introduce the world rather than give me the full Zoria adventure, and I can definitely feel that when I start getting invested in the setting. I want to see more of the world and learn more about the characters, but the prologue has to stop before it can really develop everything properly. That is not really a flaw in the concept, but it does affect how I judge it as a standalone experience. I also think some of the systems could be explained better. There are quite a few things to keep track of between combat, equipment, character development, the outpost and follower management, and it takes me a little while to understand how everything fits together. The combat itself is fairly easy to pick up, but the surrounding systems are where I sometimes feel like I am learning through trial and error. The visuals are decent for a small tactical RPG, although the environments and character presentation do not have the same level of polish as a much larger RPG. What helps a lot is that the prologue is completely free. I can get a proper look at the combat, party management, exploration and base systems without having to buy the full game first. There are also Steam achievements to work through, which gives me a few extra reasons to explore the available content. I think it works best as a sample of the larger game rather than something I should expect to provide the same amount of content as a full RPG. Overall, Zoria: Prologue is a solid tactical RPG introduction with a good foundation. I really like the four character party, turn based combat, character skills, exploration and outpost management, and there is enough depth here to make me interested in what the full game offers. The limited scope of the prologue and some rougher presentation keep it from reaching the highest ratings for me, but I think the actual gameplay systems are strong enough to make the free experience worthwhile. It feels like a promising start that gives me enough to enjoy while also making it clear that this is only a small part of the bigger adventure. Rating: 7.8/10
