About
The chess roguelike. Play game-changing cards, bend the rules, save your Queen, and escape from the dungeon.

Defeat opponents of ever increasing difficulty to escape from the dungeon.
Build your chess army. Start with just a few figures and recruit more as you go.
Collect cards to turn the tides of the battle.
Defeat each enemy Queen on your way to freedom.

Play cards to bend the rules of the game in your favour and win against unbeatable opponents.

Spend mana to play cards such as:
Summon a Shape Shifter that transforms into a random figure each turn.
Start a zombie outbreak - zombie figures do not care for the colour and attack white or black equally.
Launch an ICBM nuke.
Build walls and traps.
Launch a propaganda campaign to turn enemy figures into your colour.
And many others!

To win you either need to get smarter or to get stronger.
With every game you accumulate mana to buy new cards and chess pieces that stay with you in each new run. Maybe you would even get a chance at escaping from the dungeon.

Some of your upgrades will persist between runs, helping you to get closer and closer to the exit. Some will reset with each new run, making each new game unique.

A cautious recommendation/buy on sale. I completed the game but have no real desire to play more for the post-game and "true ending". Positives: * The core gameplay - using chess as a framework for a roguelite experience - is a fun idea. * The game is fast-paced and generally plays well, and with the new update letting you skip to bosses each run can be pretty fast * Bosses use a lot of fun mechanics to keep things enticing * Many different level setups mean you should be prepared for a number of scenarios Cons: * After a handful of permanent upgrades (maybe like, 1-2 hours in) you are no longer playing anything close to "chess". You are just moving a handful of pieces around (likely promoted queens) and spamming the same handful of cards (likely generating a ton of pawns and having them shoot things because it is the strongest way to abuse the action economy). Half the cards are no longer useful because mana is persistent between runs and you don't need to run economy cards, so each turn you are just spamming cards that nuke the board and the challenge is basically gone. I wish the game was significantly less generous with the cards, either forcing you to play one max per turn or attaching a cost to PLAYING cards so that you actually have to play some chess before annihilating the enemy without ever moving anything. * There are no new cards gated behind progress - you have seen all your options and possible cards and moves after like 30 minutes, and the post-boss permanent unlocks are only power boosts. This means every run rapidly becomes repetitive. * The plot moving forward seems attached to giving gifts to characters, and I completed the game and saw most of the content before even giving one gift to several characters. And because there are no new unlocks, I would likely have to trudge through the bosses with the same OP builds for hours to get anywhere. A diamond in the rough, really. I hope the devs continue updating and balancing things a bit, maybe add some more cards/unlocks, ways to force the player to use some of the less powerful cards, whatever.

You'll waste your first 2-3 hours just to unlock your chess board pieces and other permanent upgrades. Then the game starts. That's also why people drop the game when they encounter 3rd boss (I got this from achievement percentages), a meaningless grind suddenly roadblocking your gameplay. What happens after you finish the grind part and start gameplay? Generic experience in between boss battles, and boss battles are pretty deck and luck (your pawns turning into other pieces permanent upgrade) heavy. Worst part is the amount of bugs I encountered. Definitely don't click too fast when playing as if you are playing blitz, there were times where my piece was bugged and I couldn't move even when choosing a move but opponent still took turns. There was time where my piece got taken by my opponent but didn't disappear and opponent's piece and and my piece was stacked on top of same tile but I couldn't move it and lost turn if tried. Also dog boss battle has bugs where I move and enter my king to exit door several times and it even stays there for a whole turn sometimes but game doesn't accept it and pushes the king out repeatedly, creating an unwinnable encounter. With all the bugs and grind I can't in good faith recommend the game. Visuals look cute though. Another point, there is a affection mini-game for bosses you encounter. Even if you give them all gift they want and exhaust their dialogues and get few crowns, you don't get the achievement, I'm assuming the requirements are steep. After this you and they never talk to each other, effectively locking you out of achievements if you care about that.
It’s essentially chess combined with deck-building mechanics. Cards grant your pieces special properties. However the game is no less challenging than classic chess.
As someone who really enjoys chess, this game was quite a blast to play. It was fun playing chess with weird strategies and I absolutely loved every boss encounter in the game. All of the characters had really sweet personalities and I always looked forward to the next interaction with them and their boss fights. I completed all of the character endings and I think that's where one issue does become obvious. That is that the game does begin to be a bit repetitive near the end. It is helped quite a bit by the Rush option which I encourage using a lot since the levels between bosses can feel tedious when you've already beaten them a lot of times. My last few runs were mostly just mindless on the gameplay side and I stuck with it solely for the excellent character writing that I was hooked on. Despite that, I do think this game deserves way more attention and love and it's absolutely worth the time if you enjoy chess and short-and-sweet narratives.
This game is really good, it makes good use of its mechanics and the chess rules. I also want to be stepped on by a queen but anyways, 7/10
