People look at me funny when I say it but this is the best roguelike I have ever played. I know you have 200 hours in Hades but I like my successes more skill based than time based. 11/10 but I have yet to beat the secret boss phase so I may be a complete and utter fraud.
Nice art style, great tutorial, strong victory ending. However. - stunlock hell; getting hit once usually opens you up for more attacks from enemy groups, easily deleting 25% of your healthbar in a moment - stunlock hell is even worse by bosses, where a single touch can end your run if you're unlucky (especially in the final stretch) - the jazz music doesn't fit and feels very repetitive (I muted the music a couple runs in, I don't know if it changes on later floors) - it's not possible to dash while casting (even basic attacks), which often gets you hit - the first basic attack you get is absolutely terrible and it can take multiple runs to finally replace it - floors are procedurally generated in a way that has you run into dead ends all the time It took me ~20 runs until I finally got a ranged basic attack, which made runs actually winnable (would be nice to have a couple starting options). Being in melee range sure gets you killed quickly. I don't mind a brutal learning curve, but it's just really annoying to get hit and stunlocked in this game. So much so that I can't recommend this. 100% achievement completion pretty much boils down to beating a run within 25 minutes. It takes a decent build and much practice, but overall it doesn't take much commitment and could be worse.
Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived tog- Wait, wrong franchise. Anyway uhhh I don't have anything much to say it's a good game go get it if you're looking for some Avatar-ish (the anime one, not the blue peep one), spell-slinging beat-em-up kind of game. If you doubt me (you should, there's no reason to believe everything a stranger says on the internet), look up A Raccoon (@ARaccoon) on YouTube for some good game clips. But I digress. There's a lot of spells to test out, many (fun) combos to try, yada yada. Gets a bit grindy at the beginning (as do all roguelikes) but when you have many spells unlocked, the replayability is endless. Also I totally did not forget to review this game years ago back when I first played it and got addicted to it.
Thank you for adding content to the game and not carving it up for sale as DLC
I havent gotten to play much, but its a very very good game. The sequel is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at the moment (seems unlikely to change but i hope this ages poorly) i recommend getting this one instead
I have a love hate relationship with this game, still havent beaten it. The combat feels both really good and really bad and its for the exact same design descision. I wish someone would have told me this when I first bought it. There are no I-frames in this game, you can 0 to death someone just as easily as they can do it to you. It's certainly a skill check, but the feeling of being comboed from full health to nothing from one boss attack is definatly not a strong selling point. When it works it works, but a lot of the time its not going to work in your favor. If you like the idea of perfecting the gameplay then this is a good title for you, but honestly I can't say its a fun game for everyone.
I hate that the game gives me so many options that just arent viable. the way i wanna play is hard af. switch builds... after 70 hours or losing. win.
10/10 we don't talk about the sequel
