Witness to Mass Incarceration is a narrative-driven interactive story based on my life in federal prison. It is a brutally honest portrayal of the lack of humanity, how our lives inside are at risk every day, and the place you are forced to go within yourself to survive.
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. The player count below is how many people own it, not what they spent.

How do you capture the inhumanity of prison?
The night before I left for prison, my mother told me prison would be harder for me than the concentration camp had been for her. WITNESS to Mass Incarceration: Chapter 1 is the true story of my first day inside federal prison, where within hours I realized I am no longer in the free world, and that my survival depended on learning the rules, both spoken and unspoken.
How do you translate that inhumanity into game design?
The computer game team decided to use a 2D narrative-driven journey, pixel art and point-and-click exploration to tell my story. We were committed to telling this story authentically and to build an immersive narrative to show the gamer the reality of the harsh life all prisoners face.
Gaming techniques like dragging and sliding objects were used in furtherance of the story. Each interaction reveals another layer of prison’s reality, immersing you in the fear, uncertainty, and emotional strain that define life behind bars.
This first chapter is one in a series which tells the story of my arrest, conviction, incarceration and release. We are creating this game for you to know and feel what it is like to face incarceration. It is our hope that this game brings awareness of the issue of mass incarceration.

So impressed to see where Chapter 1 ended up--the visual style and storytelling are remarkable, and I am eager to see the rest of the chapters as they come out. A challenging story but one well worth engaging with. (Disclosure: I worked on this game during its first few months of development! To the rest of the team, I am so proud of you!!)
This is a very eye opening game to experience. The first 20 minutes of the game really has you relate to her experience with her parents. The dialogue is very heart felt and the story is very touching. It brings up an issue that needs awareness in the United States at a time like this.

This interactive game was interesting. Viewing this perspective from of a first time incarcerated woman gave insight into the emotions and events that may likely be experienced by many others. It brings attention to the internal emotions that are not likely to be told throughout the judicial process.
A really powerful and moving short narrative game about the entryway into prison. I appreciate how the game doesn't shy away from the more disturbing and dehumanizing aspects of the prison system, as well as how prison guards tend to enjoy the power granted to them by the system. While this might be uncomfortable to witness (and play), this act of witnessing is necessary, and allows the player to better connect to Evie (and others) who have gone through this process.
The voiceover, sound effects. and music were especially well done, and set such an eerie atmosphere that I experienced chills from the beginning until the end. Moreover, this game draws attention to a very serious human rights issue that is by no means invisible, but is far too often left ignored.
The first chapter was honestly so beautiful and such a powerful story. It is so emotionally packed and the art is just amazing. I do hope that this story can be shown to more people and I cannot wait for more of it to be released.
Really good story. It did however have a very abrupt ending that I did not see coming as I was enjoying it! I can't wait for the second chapter to come out!
Witness to Mass Incarceration allows players to experience some of the grotesque realities of the American prison system. As much as a game possibly could, it plunges us into the personal experiences of Evie Litwok, a woman entering prison at 60 years old. Litwok narrates the game with courage, raw honesty, and grace.
Should add a way to speed up narration/dialogue. Animation was done really well and reminds me of other games like "Until Then." Wish there was a way to use WASD or arrow keys to move the main character.
Words can't describe how I felt about playing through this game, thank you to the team for developing this :-)
