Beautiful game
I rarely leave negative reviews, but after completing 100% of the achievements, including the DLC, I feel this game deserves an honest assessment. Windstorm: Start of a Great Friendship – Remastered is, in my opinion, one of the most disappointing games I've played. I went into it expecting a meaningful story centered around Mika and Windstorm, but the relationship between them is barely explored. Mika arrives at the ranch at the beginning of the game, where Windstorm is already waiting for her, and the game provides very little context about how their relationship developed or why they are already so closely connected. The story itself is extremely limited. Throughout the game, you are given a series of quests, many of which are variations of the same few activities. You collect objects, participate in races, search for locations or items, and occasionally catch a horse or a cow. After a while, these activities become repetitive rather than enjoyable. The progression system is also extremely underdeveloped. Quests primarily reward you with EXP, which is used to level up Windstorm. There is no meaningful economy, no money, no shops, no horse equipment to purchase, and no customization system for either Mika or Windstorm. Mika remains in essentially the same outfit, and Windstorm cannot be equipped with tack. Completing the game ultimately gives you very little sense of progression or accomplishment beyond simply reaching the end. The difficulty balancing is one of the biggest problems. Some quests are so poorly balanced that I found them practically impossible to complete on the higher difficulties. For example, one apple-collecting challenge requires collecting 38 apples within a time limit. I was unable to complete it at the higher difficulty levels, yet lowering the difficulty by only one level made the challenge dramatically easier. This made the difficulty system feel less like a genuine test of skill and more like an arbitrary restriction. The difficulty names even imply that higher levels correspond to being a more experienced horse enthusiast, which makes the balancing feel particularly misleading. Then there are the bugs. There are so many technical issues that the game often feels unfinished. The game can crash unexpectedly, and I frequently had problems interacting with quest confirmation buttons and menu shortcuts. Sometimes the cursor would not appear or buttons simply would not respond. The riding mechanics are also affected by bugs. When jumping over an obstacle, the game frequently activates a slow-motion effect. On many occasions, this effect would remain active long after the jump was completed and would only disappear after encountering another obstacle. It could even activate when riding near an obstacle rather than jumping over it. During races and other activities, quest notifications could also remain on screen and become impossible to dismiss. The grooming system has problems as well. Even after thoroughly brushing Windstorm until he is supposedly clean, he can still appear dirty. The Winter Wonderland DLC introduces additional issues. During snowstorms, quest markers in the sky can become extremely difficult to see. The blue markers blend into the environment, while collectibles in the snow are represented by very subtle white effects. Finding them can become unnecessarily difficult, sometimes requiring you to wait until night time simply because they are easier to see under different lighting conditions. Most disappointing of all is that the game rarely gives you a meaningful reason to engage with its systems. There are few rewards, little customization, and very little progression beyond increasing Windstorm's statistics. After completing everything, there is no real feeling that your efforts were rewarded. The only things that kept me playing were the achievements and the graphics. The game can look beautiful at times, and the idea of a relaxing horse-focused adventure is genuinely appealing. Unfortunately, the execution does not live up to that potential. Considering the price of the game, the amount of technical issues, repetitive gameplay, weak progression, and poor balancing are particularly difficult to justify. In its current state, the game feels more like an unfinished or insufficiently polished product than a finished remaster. I rarely give negative reviews, but after playing the entire game and completing it at 100%, I cannot recommend it in its current state. I genuinely hope the next game in the franchise improves upon these issues, because the concept has potential. Unfortunately, this one was a total flop for me.
