The game is decent for casual flight but the monetization and grind is THE WORST IMAGINABLE SYSTEM FROM HELL. This game will actively try to waste your time at any opportunity. It's really not worth it. There are better games out there

I'm tired of Gaijin making the same balancing mistakes and pointing at statistics as if a spreadsheet automatically makes them reasonable. War Thunder's BR system increasingly feels like it PUNISHES YOU FOR BEING GOOD. We've seen skilled players deliberately push struggling aircraft to ridiculous results, demonstrating the obvious problem: A GOOD PLAYER MAKING A BAD VEHICLE WORK DOESN'T MAKE THE VEHICLE GOOD. Likewise, thousands of bad players dying in a powerful vehicle don't suddenly make it balanced. PLAYER PERFORMANCE ≠ VEHICLE PERFORMANCE. Air RB demonstrates this perfectly. The A-10 and Su-25 are ground attackers thrown into brackets where they can fight aircraft with no flares or chaff while carrying extremely capable all-aspect missiles. You can be stuck with ancient rear-aspect missiles while an A-10 launches an AIM-9L at you. What's the counterplay without flares? "Don't get locked?" "But the A-10 is slow!" Exactly. Put these aircraft higher and modern fighters destroy them. Put them lower and their missiles terrorise aircraft without the technology to counter them. THEY DON'T FIT THE CURRENT BR SYSTEM. Ground has the same nonsense. China gets a useful SPAA at 7.7? Moved to 8.0, where China already has another SPAA. Another goes 8.7→9.0→9.3. Another lineup broken. So much for "preserving lineups." Yet when MONEY is involved, lineup bloat suddenly doesn't matter. Germany can practically field the Tiger I Cinematic Universe. Tech-tree Tiger, premium Tiger, event Tiger, another Tiger... Did Germany desperately need another one? No. Can Gaijin sell another Tiger? There's your answer. Instead of using additions to fill genuine gaps in tech trees, we get copy-pastes strengthening already powerful lineups while other nations desperately need SPAAs, light tanks or simply SOMETHING at the right BR. Then entire brackets become premium hell: 5.7, 9.7, 10.7, 12.3 Air RB. Thousands of vehicles in the game, yet somehow you fight the same handful every match. Then there are the minor nations. French Ground isn't a tech tree. IT'S A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SOULSLIKE. France, Italy, Japan, Britain and Israel constantly feel overtiered because the people still playing them tend to actually know what they're doing. New players usually start with Germany, America or Russia. Someone grinding France or Japan is far more likely to already understand maps, positioning, ammunition and weak spots. They perform well. Gaijin sees good statistics. BR goes up. Casual players then stop playing the overtiered vehicle. Who remains? EVEN BETTER PLAYERS. They continue producing decent statistics, apparently justifying the BR even further. That's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ feedback loop. Sweden makes this even funnier. It gets an incredible collection of domestic and foreign equipment, including extremely capable German-derived vehicles, while smaller nations struggle to assemble coherent lineups. Apparently putting a Swedish flag on something fixes everything. Maybe all the German mains migrated north and suddenly learned how to play. Then there's the Tiger II at 6.7. An American 90mm player in a bad matchup is performing brain surgery trying to find the correct weak spot while praying volumetric doesn't eat the shell. Meanwhile Hans needs to identify your general postcode. But enough people apparently hold W in the Tiger II and explode, so the spreadsheet says everything is fine. A POWERFUL VEHICLE DOESN'T BECOME WEAK BECAUSE BAD PLAYERS USE IT BADLY. A MEDIOCRE VEHICLE DOESN'T BECOME OVERPOWERED BECAUSE A 5,000-HOUR PLAYER MASTERED IT. Stop balancing vehicles around the idiot holding W. Stop balancing France around the twelve psychopaths who voluntarily spaded the entire tree. Stop punishing Japan because its remaining players know every pixel of the map. Stop giving Britain another BR increase because some tea-powered lunatic figured out how to compensate for every disadvantage. Stop kicking Italy while it's already on the floor. And stop pretending lineup preservation matters while destroying useful lineups and stuffing already powerful BRs with premiums. BALANCE THE VEHICLE. Armour. Firepower. Mobility. Reload. Stabiliser. Missiles. Countermeasures. Matchups. Uptiers. Downtiers. Available counters. LINEUPS. Then use statistics as supporting evidence. STATISTICS SHOULD NOT BE GOD. War Thunder underneath all this is brilliant. That's what makes it so frustrating. There genuinely isn't another game that scratches the same itch. I don't hate War Thunder. I hate watching Gaijin repeatedly make a fantastic game worse through balancing decisions that seem disconnected from actually playing it. Maybe spend less time deciding which recognisable vehicle can become the next premium and ask one simple question: IS THIS ACTUALLY FUN TO FIGHT? Because War Thunder increasingly feels less like a vehicle combat game with monetisation attached and more like a monetisation system with a spreadsheet attached. And somewhere underneath both is a fantastic game desperately trying to get out.
