Picked it up during a discount and don’t regret a second. Tight controls, great atmosphere, and awesome effects. That soundtrack slaps! Perfectly fits the tension during battles.

Bought it on sale and honestly would’ve paid full price. Gorgeous visuals and really fun gameplay loop. Feels like flying through a retro sci-fi movie but with modern tech. Totally immersive.
First thought out of the gate was that the controls and enemies are poorly tuned. Movement is slightly clunky, especially when juxtaposed with the fact that enemy projectiles travel at lightning speed. This leads to a need to memorize each enemy in order to maximize encounters. This in itself is not a gamebreaker until you discover... that the second level is an escort quest in which you tote around an object 5x your ship's size. All of the previous issues are immediately compounded together into what I personally do not find to be a very enjoyable or engaging gameplay experience. I hate to do it to an indie game, especially one that looks pretty good, but the design choices do not represent what I personally look for in a video game.
Old-school shmup vibes with next-gen visuals. Can’t believe how good it looks for an indie!
Vostok 2061 is a confident indie entry into the classic shmup tradition, delivering fast-paced vertical shooting action wrapped in a colorful sci-fi setting that clearly draws inspiration from arcade-era design while still attempting to modernize the experience. Developed and published by DYV's Game, the game places players in the role of a newly graduated pilot sent to investigate strange events in a distant star sector, using that simple narrative framework as an excuse to propel the player through a series of intense, enemy-filled stages that emphasize reflexes, pattern recognition, and loadout planning. From the moment gameplay begins, Vostok 2061 establishes its priorities clearly: constant forward momentum, dense enemy waves, and a steady stream of visual feedback that makes every explosion, pickup, and hit feel impactful. The core shooting mechanics are responsive and straightforward, making the game immediately approachable for fans of the genre. Enemies swarm the screen in varied formations, forcing players to balance aggressive fire with careful positioning to avoid incoming bullet patterns. While the story remains light and mostly in the background, it provides just enough context to give purpose to the journey through alien worlds and hostile space zones. One of the game’s strongest aspects is its sense of progression. Between missions, players are rewarded with opportunities to upgrade and customize their ship using points earned during combat. A wide selection of weapons becomes available over time, including rapid-fire guns, plasma-based attacks, homing projectiles, mines, and defensive shields. This system encourages experimentation, as different weapon combinations can dramatically change how each stage feels. Choosing the right loadout is not just about raw power but also about adapting to specific enemy behaviors and boss mechanics, adding a strategic layer to what might otherwise be pure reflex-driven action. The variety in stages and objectives helps keep the experience engaging across multiple levels. While the core structure revolves around vertical scrolling combat, the game introduces side tasks such as escorting vulnerable allies or freeing trapped colonists, briefly shifting the player’s focus and altering the rhythm of play. Boss encounters act as clear highlights, often demanding precise movement and sustained concentration as attack patterns escalate in complexity. These fights test the player’s mastery of both movement and weapon selection, reinforcing the importance of learning enemy behavior rather than relying on brute force alone. Visually, Vostok 2061 opts for a bright, colorful presentation that enhances clarity during hectic moments. Alien environments, enemy designs, and projectile effects are distinct enough to remain readable even when the screen fills with action. The visual style may not aim for realism, but it succeeds in delivering a vibrant, arcade-like energy that suits the genre well. Complementing the visuals is a dynamic soundtrack that drives the intensity forward, pairing energetic music with impactful sound effects that make every shot and explosion feel satisfying. That said, the game’s commitment to classic design also brings some limitations. The difficulty curve can feel steep, especially for players unfamiliar with traditional shmups, and early mistakes are often punished harshly. Repetition may also become noticeable over longer sessions, as the fundamental gameplay loop changes only incrementally from stage to stage. Control preferences can vary, and while keyboard and controller options are available, some players may need time to adjust settings to find a comfortable setup. In the end, Vostok 2061 succeeds as a focused and enthusiastic homage to vertical scrolling shooters, offering solid mechanics, meaningful upgrades, and a clear respect for genre traditions. It may not reinvent the shmup formula, but it executes its vision with enough polish and energy to appeal strongly to fans of arcade-style action. For players who enjoy mastering patterns, refining loadouts, and pushing their reflexes against escalating challenges, it delivers a rewarding and energetic journey through hostile space that feels both familiar and earnestly crafted. Rating: 7/10
This feels like it went for a simple retro style and somehow ended being worse than older games that did it better with half the effort. Makes you want to play asteroids instead.
