Amazing game. If you are looking for something hard and to challenge you like I was, this is not it. It's incredibly easy, but don't let that push you away. The running, the head bob and sway, the grunts, all these things very subtly immerse you into a melancholic vibe, not similar to Mirrors Edge or Ghostrunner, it has it's own unique feel to it. In my headcannon this is the Straftat universe lol.
Ok, so let this be the first game I actually review here. Slow gamers like me need to see this: Vholume is a marvel. It squares the circle, satisfying two very different demographics that should be incompatible. Vholume is built for speedrunners, yes - but it's also built for players who like to take things slow; who want to explore every cranny, gawp at the awesome architecture, and take endless screenshots; who want to climb the walls of the race track and go out of bounds. You have to beat one speed challenge, yes, in the very first level, but that's basically a tutorial for the game's movement system - and that system is so very generous, once you've picked up the basics. You, yes, even you, slow gamer (like me), can be fast in this game! You stick to walls like a lizard. You slide on your ass like any vaguely downward-tilted or even just horizontal surface is a playground slide. You jump like a superhero. Once you've got the basics down, running feels like flying. One of the devs called the game a "running simulator" in the Steam forums, and, yeah, pretty much. Vholume is a game about the exhilaration of moving fast through a visually stunning environment. Vholume has managed to make even me, who hates games that require fast reactions and all that crap, enjoy doing practice laps just to see if I can shave one second off my personal best (which is still very bad compared to the actual speedrunners playing this game, but who cares? It's nice to see myself improving!) And once you've "graduated" from that first level, all the other levels just require you to get to the exit, once, to unlock the next level. There is no time limit. You can take 30 minuntes, if you like (or if you're still struggling with some jumps, like me). When I said this game is built for slow exploration I wasn't kidding. There's stuff hidden in the strangest places. Climb twenty roofs, and maybe you'll find a door leading down into a mysterious chamber on one of them. Listen to the ambient noises - hearing some voices? Follow them, and maybe you'll find some odd potatohead guy who'll tell you his dad's life story. Seeing a lit window in a strange place? Go see what's behind it! You won't always find something, but you'll find something often enough to make exploration rewarding. A note to players who are really, really struggling - like I did: the most useful technique you can pick up that the game does not actively teach you is how to climb walls. Knowing how to climb walls can often save you when you just barely miss a platform, and it can also substitute for complicated strings of walljumps that may be beyond your current skill level: just find a high place nearby to climb up to, and jump to your destination from there! You can look up Vholume movement technique tutorials on youtube, there are already several. But also know: if you keep playing Vholume, you *will* get better at all the movement stuff that still feels difficult to you now. (And the best thing? It even carries over to games with less generous movement mechanics, to some degree...)
I give it a THUMBS UP. Lots of tech to discover, satisfying to play. Reminds me of the background footage that's always playing in those Youtube essay videos.
fun and relaxing, but can also be competitive and infuriating. players choice!!!
