About

This is a DEMO of a game, not a full game, made in collaboration with Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences.
The Valiant Attempt is a story-driven 3D action RPG set in a low-poly world on the brink of collapse.
You play as a displaced noble turned mercenary, wandering through the ruins of nations devoured by war. Alongside AI-driven companions, you’ll battle, explore, and make choices that may change what’s left of your world — or simply survive it.
Gameplay in The Valiant Attempt mixes real-time combat with reactive AI behavior.
Enemies coordinate with each other, allies respond to your actions, as enemies and you try to defeat each. Combat blends physical collisions, directional strikes, and projectile mechanics — every swing, block, or spell feels grounded in motion and timing.
Generations after a fallen empire’s monsters reshaped the realm, humanity’s own greed has reignited the cycle of conquest.
Your homeland lies divided, your family’s fate unknown, and rumors speak of an ancient artifact that could end — or escape — the endless war.
Whether it’s myth or salvation is yours to uncover.

the game was free, and yet still overpriced.
That walking sound is atrocious. The settings menu doesn't even work, and the game is just one level.
Is this even a real game? I was done in less than 5 minutes... Went through it 3 times to make sure I wasn't missing something, clearly I wasn't and it was just a waste of time.

A valiant attempt to create a game was made, haha^^ The reason why the review count is so low is time. - the time it takes to notice that the game is not good is kinda 10 seconds - the time it takes to beat the game is 5 minutes - the time it takes to be able to review is 10 minutes So i had to keep the game open for a few more minutes to write this. And i did it for you, to make an informed decision to spend zero dollars or not. Very unpolished, very janky. And btw. mr creator, the reason why i gave it a chance is that at least it is not Ai slop.
One level, no respawning and a broken settings menu. What else can you ask for in a steam game. I feel like not even the developer play tested it. 1/10 would recommend!
Prompted to use a controller when starting the game, immediately shown the letter E to interact. I actually like the top down low poly concept that's going on here, but this isn't even a demo. The settings button doesn't actually work, the controls are not the greatest, and its about 7 1/2min worth of "content" I think if this had a proper half-year of TLC it could be a decent game. I do not recommend picking this up, but I'm hoping that with a positive review that I instill inspiration and dedication to the dev(s).

Valiant Attempt is a small free action RPG that caught my attention because it is trying to mix real time combat with a party of companions that actually react to what I am doing. I play as a displaced noble who has ended up working as a mercenary in a world that has been torn apart by war. The game is set in a low poly fantasy world, and I spend my time travelling through the remains of different nations, fighting enemies, talking to people and trying to work out what is really going on. It is important to mention that this is only a demo, so I am judging what is actually available rather than treating it like a complete RPG. The combat is the part I found most interesting. I can use melee attacks, blocks, spells and projectiles, and positioning matters because the fighting uses physical collisions rather than just turning everything into simple number exchanges. My companions are also supposed to react to what is happening around them, while enemies can work together instead of always running straight at me. I like the idea because it gives the fights a more active feeling, although the combat still feels like something that could use more refinement. There are moments where I can see the potential, but it does not always feel as smooth or precise as I would want. The companion system is probably the thing I would like to see developed the most. Having allies with their own behaviour makes the world feel more like an actual party based RPG, especially when they respond to what I am doing instead of simply standing behind me and following a fixed routine. I also like that conversations are supposed to matter, with choices that can affect what happens around me. The problem is that the demo is too small for me to properly see how deep these systems are going to become. I get enough of a taste to be interested, but not enough to know whether the ideas will eventually come together into something really strong. The world has a darker atmosphere than the simple graphics might make me expect. The low poly style is quite basic, but I think it suits the game's old school RPG feeling. There is a lot of talk about war, ruined nations and an ancient artifact that could potentially change the situation, so the story is clearly setting up something much larger. I liked the quieter moments where I could actually explore and talk to characters because they gave me a break from the fighting. At the same time, the demo ends before I get enough time with the world to become properly attached to it. The biggest issue for me is simply how limited the current release is. I cannot judge the full progression, amount of content or long term variety because this is specifically a demo made as part of a university collaboration. That makes it difficult to give it the same kind of score I would give a finished game. I also noticed that the presentation and combat still have that prototype feeling in places. The ideas are there, but some animations, interactions and systems do not feel completely finished yet. I think this is one of those games where I can clearly see what the developer wants to achieve, but I cannot give it credit for content that is not actually available. Still, I think there is something worth watching here. The combination of responsive companions, physical combat, exploration and a more serious fantasy setting gives Valiant Attempt its own identity, even with such a small amount of content. I especially like the idea of having a party where the behaviour of my allies and enemies can affect how a fight develops. If the full game expands these systems properly, there is a chance it could become much more interesting than this demo currently suggests. For now though, I am mostly judging the potential rather than a finished experience. Overall, Valiant Attempt is a promising demo with some genuinely good ideas behind it. I like the real time combat, companion behaviour, darker world and story setup, but the limited amount of content and unfinished feel make it impossible for me to rate it as highly as a complete RPG. I would rather be fair and judge what I actually have instead of giving it extra points for what it might become. As a free demo, I think it is worth trying, especially because the core ideas are interesting enough to make me curious about where the project could go. Rating: 6.6/10
