Going from early access to 1.0 feels like more of a trip than a big leap in progress for the game. You get a 1.0 with hardly any quality of life changes or meaningful items added. It is 2026 and there isn't inventory sorting or crafting from nearby chests? That feels clunky and early access.
It's insane that they released a game in 2026 with client authoritative multiplayer, with that much funding. Basically impossible to play MP, especially boating, unless you take special care to who owns/loads this area. Never mind that you can only play with people that you 100% trust and can't add extended friend groups - they can literally do anything, load stuff from other saves, load completely disruptive mods, whatever they want. Gameplay wise, most of the same pain points that existed in EA are still here. The developers simply refuse to accept feedback and think that punishing the players and extreme grind are good gameplay. My absolute favourite? A viking game getting no Sea update before 1.0 and the characters still can't swim or dive. Dropped something 3 meters below sea level? Good luck getting it. Whats good about this game is the building system and... idk, combat? if it worked in MP?

Valheim is a deliberately slow paced experience that's supposed to feel mysterious and dangerous and it does a good job of that. Unfortunately, the developers have mistaken "a slow pace" for "a tedious and punishing grind" that results in obviously unfair results, like putting 3 resources in and getting 1 back, when there were multiple steps before that, that they could've taken to reduce the output, if they felt that was necessary. There's also a difference between keeping things vague and keeping them opaquely obscured. The first encourages exploration, the latter encourages looking things up online to skip the experimentation in an already punishing game. Something I find that's clever, is that you need to stay scarce during the night. What's not clever, is just spamming monsters at the player to obviously punish them, instead of giving them the choice to do it anyway, with some resistance. The game does not respect your time. That's the baseline issue here. It's not a "hardcore experience", it's just an otherwise enjoyable experience, hampered by a stubborn mind set. Back to the drawing board boys, this ain't it.
Sad move. Grindy.
